Tidy London: Now that's what I call messy...

Reported by bunny / Submitted 07-08-02 23:33

It was my first venture into the SE1 Club and my first Tidy night, so expectation was the main order of the day, with a side-helping of curiosity. After an absolutely fabulous afternoon spent rolling up and down the Thames on the Good Ship H20 (tune ahoy!!), splicing the mainbrace as we went, we returned to dock three very merry sheets to the wind + thoroughly prepared for a hard night’s Hard House!

The club was pretty easy to find and we got there pretty early to avoid the queue’s, which we were warned could get pretty hectic. Quite a crowd there already but the door people knew what they were doing and everyone got in quickly. From what I could see and after chatting to the many happy ravers through the night I think everyone agreed that the staff at SE1 were on the ball, friendly and refreshingly attitude-free. Always a good thing to see security getting into it and throwing a few moves instead of pushing their way around like they’re in one of Old Ronald Macdonald’s factory farms...

We’re inside and even though the little hand was barely tickling 10pm under the chin the club was already heaving, with everyone checking what’s what, where and when. The two main rooms weren’t open yet so it was time to find a parking space in the UV-tastic chill-out room and take it all in.

Checklist:
Cloakroom – Right by the entrance, lots of smiley staff, decent prices
Chill-out – Excellent lighting, some good stalls, loads of sofas
Toilets – Easy to find, clean and not stifling hot
Bar prices – decent

So far so good...

By the time the main rooms open the place is packed and looking around at all the outstanding outfits, hairstyles and accessories in all the beautiful colours of the day-glo rainbow, I can think of only one thing: It’s carnival time, hee hee!! I love it when everyone makes an effort + there were some top-notch fashions on show that night!

We decide to start off with Paul Maddox who throws us right in at the deep end with the kind of bouncy hard house that brings out the invisible pogo-sticks all round as the happy dancefloor launches into round one of Who Can Do The Best Zebedee Impression? Ooh, it’s a close call Wink

Next up is Tara Reynolds and I’m buzzing like a bee in heaven. I haven’t seen one of her sets for so long it’s almost criminal but I always love the pure euphoria she injects into an eager-beaver crowd. No disappointments allowed as the tunes slide thick and fast like honey from a hot knife and all the good ravers are getting mighty messy, and more than a little sticky too Big grin At this point all my noble intentions from the start of the night about pacing myself and reserving energy for the end of the night are thrown straight out of the emergency exit and it’s time to get down to some hardcore stomping!!

Ok, so it’s really time we go check out the other room now. The main room is bigger and cooler but that’s not what really hits you. Just one wide-eyed gaze around you and you realise that someone really should inform NASA that someone’s nicked one of their most advanced technologies and installed it either side of the Tidy Trax stage. Lasers??? By halfway through Lee Haslam’s outstanding set the Starship Enterprise has gone into warp drive and from all directions ribbons, streams and shimmering drops of green soak the dancefloor with giggling joy. Music Is The Drug drops and you realise that yes, this is one of the best nights of your life!

From now on in there’s no turning back...Ian M. carries the crowd even further on a wave of pure, uplifting beats and glosticks and the ever-present Tune signs are dipping in and out of the sea of stompers like white horses. All we can do now is hope that our legs can make it through the night.

At this point I must quite guiltily confess that I forgot all about making notes and just went into an all-out frenzy. Ian M’s set ends I think maybe, just maybe, I might take a quick 5 minutes rest in the chill-out room... but then the words ‘WELCOME TO THE TIDY BOYYYYYYYYYYSSSSS’ ring out loud and clear and I think, ah, I’ll get plenty of rest when I’m dead. So it’s right up to the front of the stage and time to make those calf muscles feel the burn!! The place is wall-to-wall madness, totally jam-packed with an atmosphere bordering on the ecstatic. Everything to do with the mundane, the normal, the routine, is forgotten. For now and forever it’s just you and the music.

You know, I really rather like the Tidy Boys Wink

And now, the end is near...

It’s the final set of the night and the one you’ve all been thinking about all week. Lab4 v Lisa Lashes commences....NOW! Lisa goes right in there with a tune so hard it could make Mike Tyson cry for his mummy. The dancefloor gleefully resigns itself to the fact that it’s going to spend the rest of the week crippled in pain and knuckles down to the kind of fists-clenched, knees-up-to-the-chin stomping that only happens when something comes along that’s THIS GOOD! For well over the next hour and a half Lisa and Adam Lab4 take it in turns to play tunes that make us dance so hard our legs feel in danger of dropping off through wear and tear Big grin But at almost half 6 the last encore plays out and through a haze of dry ice and sky-high spirits a grateful, mental crowd give a huge show of appreciation – we came, we saw we caned it!!

Then all that’s left is to file out to the cloakroom (again, thanks SE1 for getting us all sorted so quickly!), collect some fliers and head off to London Bridge to wait for the Tube.

Tidy London – clean beats, messy punters!! ?
