Clockwork Orange - Review Reported by Shaun / Submitted 11-09-02 06:27 Clockwork Orange is one of the biggest and longest running promotions in the UK, after hosting legendary Ibizian parties and events at The Cross and Turnmills, it has now returned to its original home, Camden Palace. The night had a line up to die for in my opinion: Andy Manston, Darren Christian, John Kelly, Tall Paul, Eddie Halliwell and my personal favourite, the mighty Judge Jules. Here was a night that promised a lashing of trance, a sprinkling of funky house all topped off with a helping of hard house. When I entered the Palace the place looked fantastic, three big screens had been erected and audio visuals were flashing across them, also they had hung white drapes across the palace which made the grimy old place look nice for a change. Andy Manston and Darren Christian were on the decks playing a heady mix of funky and progressive house. At this stage the night was only just warming up and everyone was grooving rather than dancing but then at one o’clock Mr Tall Paul stepped up to the decks and put his foot firmly on the accelerator unleashing tunes such as the fantastic Plastic Boy “Silver Bath” on his adoring audience. In fact Tall Paul got the biggest reception of the night – probably due to the fact that he is such an integral part of the Clockwork Orange experience. With the crowd firmly in first gear, the arrival of a certain Mr Judge Jules was announced and he then took the crowd by the scruff of its neck and threw it into orbit. All the trance anthems of the moment were played by the Judge from “Awakening” by Rank 1 to “10 in 1” by Members of Mayday to the massive “The Theme” by Jurgen Vries – it was a typically energetic, uplifting and non-cheesy set from the Judge – he certainly did not budge on this occasion After dancing frantically to Judge Jules’ set it was time to relax a bit as John Kelly came on. I have heard that John Kelly is famous for his hard uplifting trance sets so I was well looking forward to seeing the scouse legend, however I was disappointed by his set. He lurched from hard trance to trance and then to house and the set did not flow properly in my opinion, the momentum that Judge Jules had built was lost and the atmosphere began to die and people started to leave. He did play some quality tracks such as “Can U Dig it?” but in the main it was an uninspiring set. By 6am the club was emptying out in a big way and Eddie Halliwell sure had a lot to do to take the atmosphere back to the Tall Paul/Judge Jules level. He played hard chunky house to begin with but some of the tunes fell flat such as the bizarre hard house mix of Blur’s “Boys and Girls” which frankly did not work. We then decided to leave the Palace but just as we were doing so Arome’s “Hands Up” came booming out of the speakers – however, by that stage we were ready to leave and so we left the Palace with hard as nails German Trance ringing in our ears. Overall, I had a great night, the sets from Tall Paul and Judge Jules made the night for me but the last 2 ½ hours of the night were a bit of a let down. One thing I was very impressed with was the new air conditioning system at the Palace and I did not feel hot all night which was great and meant that I felt utterly comfortable all night long. I would recommend Clockwork Orange to anyone as it is a lot of fun and the music, in the main, is great. If you like your trance and house then check it out. The next one is in October and features Sonique, Tall Paul, Signum and Alex P and Brandon Block.
