Interview with Simon Eve @ The Fishtank

Reported by Robert Muir / Submitted 22-10-02 22:40

Now the highlight of the Fishtank was amazing, a true talent, the one, the only Mr Simon Eve – he’s got my vote! Pete Wardman first brought Simon to the Fishtank 3 years ago as a guest at their 4th Birthday. He’s now one of the residents and even headlined with Pete at the 'tanks 7th Birthday bash this year – supppperb ! If you see a race between a BMW Z3, Porsche Boxer and a Ferrari F1, you know who would out perform - all cars are good, but Simon was that Ferrari out of the three DJ’s that night, blowing the competition to pieces.

Robert Muir: So Simon how did you get your break ?

Simon Eve: I had a couple of club breaks while DJing at University in 1996 when two friends and myself got together to put on some parties at the Student Union and the Gardening Club. However, the big break came later that year when Pete Wardman made me a resident at his night, Sherbet at The Soundshaft.

RM: Were you helped on your way at all ?

SE: The Sherbet residency definitely helped because people sat up and took notice that I was playing at a very credible club alongside the likes of Pete Wardman, Rachel Auburn, the Sharp Boys etc. After giving me the Sherbet residency, Pete Wardman then let me figure out most of the rest for myself, so I had to get my own bookings from then on like everyone else, which is a very valuable part of the learning curve.

RM: Do you think the scene has progressed in the form of productions over the last year?

SE: I think the overall quality of productions has improved somewhat, partly due to new listeners demanding more than the disposable 'oink oink' sound served up by certain producers (mentioning no names!) and partly due to the music industry recession forcing some of the half hearted producers out of the business. The overall sound of our scene has certainly changed over the past year as well, although rather being a true progression, it's also down to simply drawing more influence from the trance and techno scenes.

RM: With your new night RecoverWorld at the Fridge, what are you hoping to bring to the ever ready crowds of Brixton ?

SE: We're trying to give a different slant to our night, firstly by featuring several live PA's, and secondly by showcasing artists and producers associated with our various labels. Some nights attempt this, but are often limited by the range of artists on their label. However, as we manage several labels, we can call upon the likes of Signum from the Jinx UK label, K90 and Tom Harding from the Recover label, Jon Rundell from Retek, Pablo Gargano from EVE, and then on to a range of artists who happen to be appearing on our labels as either artist or remixers at the time of the next event. Hopefully we'll be able to keep the line-ups fresh, and just as important, the names appearing are relevant to some of the big tracks of the moment, as I think the public appreciate knowing that there's a reason behind the names on a line up. It's one thing putting on DJ's that play other people's records and are capable of drawing a crowd, but our line-ups feature artists and producers that are at the cutting edge of things today.

RM: Seeing you play what is in my eyes the best club night on the south coast, the Fishtank, what influenced your becoming one of the residents ?

SE: One major factor is the broad music policy and open-minded crowd at The Fishtank as it's refreshing to get to a club nowadays where you aren't expected to play nosebleed hard house all night. I think anyone that had only ever heard me play a hard set at Insomniacz or Superfish would be surprised if they heard me playing some house and trance tunes early on in my sets at The Fishtank. I do like a lot of house and trance tracks but rarely get a chance to play them! The other significant factor is the promotions team, who are a fantastic bunch who always focus foremost on having a good party.

RM: As one of the better DJs in the hard dance scene today - what has been the highlight of your career so far ?

SE: I'd have to say either one of the following occasions: The first was playing after Carl Cox at Wildlife at Heaven, because the man is such a wizard behind the decks it was quite a challenge to have to try and follow that, and to such an expectant crowd. The other occasion was the last Impulz indoor event in Holland, when there were over 12,000 people packed into the hard dance arena, and the crowd, sound and visuals made for an absolutely electric atmosphere.

RM: As a producer yourself, how do you test your new productions?

SE: The ideal testing ground is to play them out to a crowd during a set. However, unless you know your studio monitoring inside out, I'd highly recommend testing it out on several sets of home and car speakers first to make sure it sounds as good as the next tune on every sound system, as what sounds good in the studio doesn't always sound good in a club. Once I'm happy with the tune I'll give it to a couple of DJs like Paul Glazby, Andy Farley or Justin Bourne to get an independent opinion, as it's hard to accurately judge your own work.

RM: Tony De Vit in my eyes was the greatest Producer/DJ that there has ever been; who do you rate as the crème de la crème ?

SE: Tony De Vit was a huge influence for me too, as he made some classic tunes and had the gift of playing the right tune for the moment, time and time again during a set. However, as a producer I'd have to nominate Tiesto for making some of the most inspiring dance music on the planet, with BK leading the pack of hard dance producers. From a DJ perspective it would have to be Carl Cox because of his technical brilliance and the ability to mix together three minimal, almost meaningless tunes together into a mesmerising rhythm, even if you're not a techno fan. For sheer technical ability in the hard dance scene I'd have to say that Sterling Moss probably leads the way, 3 decks, FX, a 909 etc. certainly helps him stand out from the crowd.

RM: What tunes are you currently playing at the moment that makes the dance floors erupt?

SE:

  • Justin Bourne 'Corruption' Weirdo remix
  • Umek 'Gatex' Tiesto remix
  • Disco Brothers 'First Contact'
  • Signum 'Third Dimension'
  • DJ Snowman 'And Then They Start To Dance' (remixes)
  • Justin Bourne & James Lawson 'Soul Taker' (Paul Glazby remix)
  • Tony De Vit 'I Don't Care' unreleased mixes (and I'm not telling you who by!) – RM “ I know but I’m not letting on either!”

Plus a couple of things I'm in the process of signing, so I can't reveal all just yet!

RM: Do you prefer the studio or DJing?

SE: I prefer DJing without a doubt, as playing to a crowd is more of a high-risk environment where the result of your decisions (i.e. tune selection and mixing) is almost instant. I suppose performing a 100% live PA would be the ultimate test, but I'm some way off being fully competent in the studio, let alone being let loose to play live!

RM: What plans do you have for your own record label in the coming year ?

SE: With Recharge, we're looking forward to it being business as usual once again, following a couple of months of delays while we bought out React's share in the label. We've already got the next three releases lined up, with Justin Bourne's 'Corruption' hitting the shelves in November, along with a new remix by Weirdo, and the next two releases feature myself and DMF. In 2003 we'll be looking to take the label on the road with a few tour dates. Aside from Recharge, there are stacks of new releases forthcoming on the other labels we manage; Recover, Retek, Jinx UK, Discover and Fevah Trance, so there are some exciting times ahead.

RM: One last one Simon, what all time classic line up would you love to witness if you were out clubbing yourself ?

SE: One line-up that can't be beaten would be the Trade line-up from a few years back, not simply because of each DJs individual ability, but also because of how well they played together – the night had an unbeatable progression from start to finish, which is something many clubs lack today. Here we go then:

Alan Thompson
Malcolm Duffy
Steve Thomas
Tony De Vit
Ian M
Pete Wardman

Thanks for taking the time for this, and all the best mate…

Simon plays at The Fishtank every 3rd event – this month Friday 01/11/02 plays host to Ed Real Vs Billy Daniel Bunter – Nukleuz Vs Honeypot (Who’s The Boss!) 1200 Capacity Two room Mind Blower – also featuring Annie Nightingale from Radio One in Room 2.
