Interview with the Knowwhere crew

Reported by tom / Submitted 18-12-02 18:32

December 27th sees the relaunch of London trance club Knowwhere as they make a move from Brixton's Club 414 to The Soundshaft in central London. At the same time promoters Anthony Dean and Pablo have brought on board Steve Williams to help on the promotion side so plenty has changed since you last heard from them. We popped a few questions to the crew before the first party at their new venue:

HarderFaster: How long ago and why was Knowwhere started ?

Knowwhere: Oct 2001, Knowwhere came from the Awakening which was born from Sleepless @ 414. Sleepless was to us the only party us and all of our mates went to every month, when Tim Seddon and Ian Betts decided to stop it we were so upset at the thought of loosing our best night out we took it over.

HF: For those who don't know, can you tell us what the music policy is at Knowwhere ?

KW: Banging Uplifting Trance. We feel we have bridged the gap between Bouncy Hard House And Euphoric Trance by giving the music a bouncy hard edge with less break but all the tune.

HF: What is it about Knowwhere that distinguishes it from other club nights ?

KW: We believe that Knowwhere has a completely unique atmosphere, its like a house party crowd in a banging night club situation. A little bit like the Gallery ( at Turnmills) was 2/3 years ago.

HF: What's the reason behind your planned move to the Soundshaft from Club 414 ?

KW: The reason for our move is because our members requested it. They asked us to find a nicer club with a better sound system in a more central location. So we moved to the Sound Shaft.

HF: Knowwhere has always been a trance oriented club –

KW: Yes. Some people think that Trance is only what you hear on the radio. We play from Banging Uplifting to what people are now calling Hard Dance.

HF: Your first night at the Soundshaft is on Friday 27th December... traditionally that's going to be a difficult gig to fill, sitting as it does between Christmas and the New Year - what do you have in store for clubbers to drag them away from their turkey sandwiches that night ?

KW: We believe that many people will want to party after two days of turkey and family, and for those who don’t want to spend £50 on a ticket to go to an over packed club at new year will come to us. We are giving away a free limited edition knowwhere Christmas Cd to every Member who comes on the night and concession price to everybody else.

HF: Given unlimited cash, what would your ideal line-up at a Knowwhere party be ?

KW: The Residents: The Infamous Barney Bell (knowone kicks a party off better), Ian Betts, Anthony Dean. There are some great DJ’s and performers out there, like K90, Tiesto and Ferry Corsten that we’d love to having playing for us as well though, it would have to be a bigger venue to get them and their fans all in!

HF: During the June Bank holiday weekend you teamed up with the Dune35 crew to bring Signum to the Electrowerkz - how did that night go down with the punters ?

KW: Awesome. A couple of months before we emailed our members asking who they would like to play . We made a sort list and then saw who was available. Plus they were fantastic and lovely people who stayed and partied with the crowd to the end.

HF: Was it difficult to book such a high profile DJ given the relatively small size of the promotions ?

KW: (question answered by Pablo) Anthony is a bloody Genius who seems to know every one. It would have been difficult for me. Plus
we attracted over 900 people that night.

HF: Can you let us know who you've got booked up to play in the New Year ?

KW: Our policy is to bring new blood in to the scene, whilst relying on our residents to bring us consistency. New Djs coming in are: Max-E-Groove radio show Amsterdam and LA plus playing the finial set at the Love Parade, Collin Romeo, Paul Divine, Neil Hodgson, Paul Brooksby(Lumberjacks), The Man Adam, Daegal Brain, and not forgetting the Infamous Barney Bell plus more.

HF: Please give us a 'Knowwhere Crew' top three tunes of all time...

KW:
Agnelli & Nelson - Every Day
Lost Tribe - Gamemaster,
Space Brothers - Troubled Soul

HF: Any questions you would like to have been asked but weren't ?

KW: Yeah, where does the money go ? We are a non profit making organisation, Putting the People first and giving a true escape from your weeks work is what we’re about. Any money that a night makes gets ploughed back into Knowwhere!

Thanks guys for your time...

As for Stevie in the picture...sorry luv, I have sen you in worse states (recalling wildchild picture of the two of us looking like looking like something from a b-rate horror movie). As for KnowWhere, I would like to add that the crowd really is great and the promoters really look after you. When I went to KnowWhere at Heaven earlier this year I was really impressed by the way Pablo was going round making sure everyone was having fun...Actually he was walking around, pint in hand looking very nervous, much in the way a house party host does! This, in addition to a great music policy and now a new and nicer venue, is what makes KnowWhere so special. The crew are interested in seeing you have a good time rather than grabbing your money and fucking off.

I went to Knowhere at the Electrowerkz back in June and it was a lovely atmosphere. Anthony Dean and Ian Betts are both fantastic DJs.
