Interview with Paul Van Dyk

Reported by Shaun / Submitted 30-01-03 20:37

One of the biggest and best known DJs in the world, trance superstar Paul van Dyk needs little introduction. Rated as the number 4 DJ in the world in the top 100 DJs poll, he's one of the few names capable of selling out a venue the moment his name appears on a flyer. Shaun Rowland had a chat with him as he prepares for the upcoming 'Digital Love'...

Shaun Rowland: You’re playing for “Digital Love” on March 6th for Cream. You seem to have a strong relationship with Cream, as you were also resident at their Amnesia nights in Ibiza. Does Cream hold a special place in the history of dance culture in the UK in your opinion?

Paul van Dyk: It definitely has yes, no question. Cream alongside other important promoters have moved the whole dance scene onto a bigger scale. They were one of the very few promoters who hold high quality events. It was always great to play at Cream and I don’t really understand why they closed as when I was there it was always rammed and everyone was having a great time.

SR: Many saw the closure of Cream in Liverpool as further evidence that clubland entered a recession last year. How do you see the current state of dance music/club culture in the UK?

PvD: I see it as a completely homegrown problem. The problem, in my opinion, starts with the clubbing magazines you have in the UK. Instead of supporting the music all they do is write about which is the best mixture of drugs to take on the weekend. Therefore people who have been interested in the music and I think you have to be into the music to go clubbing for the first time, are no longer interested in going out as it appears that the scene is about the drugs and freaks rather than the music.

Secondly, record companies are contributing to the problem. Instead of trying to sign new talent and push forward great music, they are going for the most obvious cheesiest stuff – like all the eighties dance cover versions out at the moment. People who are into electronic dance music hate this kind of music . The problem won’t get better in the UK until the dance music magazines and record labels concentrate on supporting good music.

There may also be a downhill movement in terms of the week to week clubs, people these days seem to prefer special events. If you see the same DJs week in week out it doesn’t seem as special anymore. That’s why I try to limit my visits to the UK

For me though the scene hasn’t actually slowed down. Every time I have played in the UK its been a lot of fun and the clubs have been full , people are energetic and its going off!

SR: You have previously been critical of the London clubbing scene. Has playing regularly at Gatecrasher changed your opinion?

PvD: Gatecrasher London is very different to the rest of London clubbing. They bring a very high production standard to London. I have had amazing times playing for places like the Gallery but sometimes I have found London too much up its own arse – people hopping around to the most boring music and thinking that they are cool. That’s not what clubbing is about, its about quality music and enjoying yourself. Gatecrasher have brought a brilliant crowd into London. I think it does great things for London.

SR: What clubs do you currently enjoy playing the most and why?

PvD: It depends on so many circumstances, you can play somewhere and it is outstanding and you go back a few months later and its not. Recently I have been on an amazing tour through Asia and I played in the US on NYE, which was excellent.

SR: Why do so many DJs now tour the US?

PvD: Its nothing new for me, I can’t speak for the other guys, I have been going to the USA for years and things are going really well there – so well that they don’t need us Europeans to go over there and show them how its done. I am totally happy that I have my own little space in the scene over there and I can go over and give an American audience my interpretation of electronic dance music.

SR: You’re well known as a globe trotting DJ. What countries are you scheduled to play in this year and is the international DJ lifestyle as glamorous as people imagine it to be?

PvD: Its not glamorous, for some people it is, but for me it’s not. I am so passionate and dedicated to the music that for me its not about partying but being a real freak about the music and going on and on about it! A long tour will involve long flights and then playing a long set late at night. I try and catch up with as much sleep as possible – you end up on your own in the hotel sleeping! That’s not glamorous. Then after you’ve slept your tour manager wakes you up, takes you to the airport, pushes you through security and then suddenly you’re in another country and it starts all over again.

I’ll be concentrating on the main territories this year: UK, Germany, the US and Europe – also I am going on an Australian tour after the Miami Music Conference.

SR: How often are you going to be in the UK this year?

PvD: As often as I can. I think the whole scene and everything that comes with it is appreciated in the UK more than any other country and for this reason the UK will always be a very special place for me to play.

SR: What’s the most memorable set you’ve ever played and why?

PvD: I would have to say that there have been a few. I’ll pick a few UK ones. The six hour sets I did at Gatecrasher, Sheffield were amazing, I also did a four hour set for Cream that was very cool because at that time Gatecrasher and Cream were competing against each other and so therefore I had the feeling that the Cream crowd wanted me to feel more at home than the GC crowd, so they bought all these banners and stuff for me – it was a really special night. I have loved playing the festivals as well, they have all been outstanding particularly the last Creamfields – finally the sound system was working at a festival and the atmosphere was great - really energetic.

SR: You’re a Producer/remixer as well as a DJ – which do you prefer?

PvD: In terms of production it’s a lot of fun to exchange styles and stuff like that and its great fun working with people like U2 and keeping my sound so it sounds like a PVD production. I wouldn’t choose one over the other though; they are both equally as important.

SR: You have a new CD/DVD called Global out on February 11th. Tell us about that…..

PvD: A lot of my previous releases haven’t been available to buy due to legal reasons so we got everything cleared at last and then we decided to make an interesting project out of it. The whole album is recorded in 5.1 surround sound so you are able to experience the music like you are in the middle of a studio. We also filmed what was going on when I was touring last year, we tried to capture what exactly goes on and focussed on the cities as well and the way in which different nationalities live. We tried to merge the pictures with the music. The picture is a truly global impression of what’s going on in club culture across the world – people going off in Japan for example as much as they do in say the UK.

SR: Is there any new material on that?

PvD: There is one new track that I have recorded for a forthcoming Mexican movie. I have a new artist album out in September that will be all new PVD material, the first single is out in April. I have recorded exactly the music that I wanted to make, and all the tunes from the LP that I have played out in clubs have had great reactions and people do not even know that they are my new productions, they are going crazy to these productions and that gives me a very good feeling.

The music ranges from a very modern form of Indie Britpop, even with a little bit of guitar in it! To full on banging club productions. There are a few tracks on there that I could never play at a club but it reflects the type of music that I enjoy listening to. I have also been working with a few vocalists and there is a much more intense deep meaning to some of the tracks than before. An example is a tune we finished last week called “Like a Friend” this was influenced by my trip to India and my impression of the country – it was devastating. I saw things on a level there that I have never seen anywhere else (in terms of poverty) and this track tries to capture what I thought and what I felt whilst in India.

SR: How would you describe the 'unique PvD sound'?

PvD: A totally honest sound, I have never done anything I didn’t want to do, From the poppiest PVD production to the hardest PVD production this is all a reflection of PVD.

SR: What are your big tune tips for 2003?

PvD: Nu-NRG are gonna be blowing people’s minds in 2003. Musically they are the bomb and they are gonna be huge.

SR: On average, how many records do you get sent in the post every week? How many of these actually make it into your record bag?

PvD: I get sent two post boxes every week……A hell of a lot! Maybe 10-15 tracks get into my box and when I am actually playing I may remember to play 2 or 3 of these.

SR: Which new Djs do you currently rate and why?

PvD: Edgar V who plays in Space, Miami. He’s not a new DJ but not many people have heard of him, he is an amazing talent. He has a very distinctive style of mixing and mixes up loads of different styles: house, breakbeat, trance and techno.

SR: Ashley Casselle is your number one choice of warm up DJ. What led to that relationship?

PvD: The fact that he is able to play his kind of music very intensely and he is an amazing talent.

SR: Who would be your ideal back to back partner?

PvD: I played b2b with Tiesto this year at Amnesia and that was really good.

SR: You can have any 3 Djs play at your birthday party. Who would they be and why?

PvD: Nick Warren – a long time friend and a very talented DJ. Edgar V and I don’t know who else there are so many. The problem is if they are playing then they cannot party with us so I would prefer a CD playing and then we can all party together – the Abba Gold collection maybe?

SR: And finally, a question we always ask every interviewee, what are your top three tunes of all time?

PvD: Don’t have – you can have my top ten thousand tunes if you want them?

Interesting perspective about the so-called downturn in UK clubland. Record companies milking existing signings over new talent is a well-worn argument but I've never heard the one that music magazines are obsessed with drugs over music. A few obvious culprits spring to mind. Smart geezer...
