Matt Handy Interview with Robbie Muir Reported by Robert Muir / Submitted 09-05-03 10:16 Our roving interviewer and reviewer Robbie Muir catches up with Matt Handy, DJ, Promoter, and owner of Hands On Records in Southsea for a chat... Robert Muir: Where did it all start, the first place you thought 'this is the career for me'? Matt Handy: My love for dance music started in my early teens about 15 years ago at around 14. This sort of music wasn’t that easy to find as it was still very underground. I remember having so many mental times listening to early pirate stations and rave tapes of pioneering DJ’s and artists. Then I first got into clubbing going to parties like Sterns, Interdance, Empire, Universe, Fantasia, Vision etc. Listening to DJ’s like Colin Dale, Luke Slater, Carl Cox, Grooverider, Lenny Dee etc. All types of dance music became a real passion for me that kept growing as I collected and listened to more good music hearing it progress as time went on. So my passion was there from an early age and I finally had enough money to get a set of decks and I taught myself to mix and started to play my music to more and more people. RM: Where did you play your first gig? MH: My first gigs were at crazy all-night wood party’s and underground venues mainly in the South of England playing alongside DJ’s now international known. This kept quickly developing into doing more and more party’s for bigger and better nights. RM: How did you get your break? MH: Through meeting more like minded people. It has been great, there has been so many fantastic people and party’s - Spooky/Sunnyside up/Enzo’s/ Sundissential/Slap’n’tickle the list is endless. Having amazing times with loads of up for it friends in clubs all over like The End / Camden Palace / Ministry / Turnmills / Enzo’s / 414 / Manor / The Drome SW1 and countless others. Playing together with DJ’s like Paul Van Dyke, Jon OO Flemming, Tony De Vit, Lottie, Mr C, Lisa Lashes and loads of other top names. In 1997 I entered and won several DJ competitions including PLASA at Earl’s Court and Mix Moves in Paris and was judged by the likes of Pogo, Cutmaster Swift and Rocky and Diesel (X-press 2). My career has steadily progressed into successfully DJing at venues Big and small. I manage my shop Hands On Records and now the my own studio which I teach DJ’s a BTEC at Chichester college of Arts and Technology and around schools & colleges in the South of England with all ages 10-40 with some council projects. They love it and Ive had great success with some keen kids and students. Hope it helps to educate the next generation into the less commercial club nights and keep it underground. RM: I believe your night “Contact” had the likes of BK, Nick Sentience playing in the early days? MH: Yes we have had loads of quality cutting edge artists and DJ’s such as BK, Oberon, Pranksters, There was some great moments when we had Sentience LIVE (now Nick Sentience on his own) 3 Guitar wielding maniacs playing amazing techno and trance. Pyrotechnics blowing up I’ve never seen 400 people jump so high and together. RM: Is the night restarting again? MH: Contact restarted last year at South Parade Pier and there’s been some rocking nights with DJ’s such as Dave Randall, Chris Liberator, Dave the Drummer, Nick Sentience, Organ Donors as well as the finest up and coming talent. There are some even bigger things planned. RM: Do you think it’s harder for up and coming DJ’S to get their break these days? MH: There are a lot more good DJ’s out there and its vastly more popular, everyone has a chance though, so many people love music and will always enjoy watching people play it. If you’re passionate enough then it will grow from there. RM: As one of Portsmouth’s Premier DJs, what has been the highlight of your career so far? MH: There have been many highlights and continue to be: Performing @ Mixmoves Paris was a great experience on French TV with ice carving in front of us and 1000’s watching also winning Plasa Scratch mixing championships and being Judged by such respected artists as Pogo and Cutmaster swift. Playing @ The End on some amazing nights when it first opened - sound system in that place is awesome. Warming up for Paul van Dyk, Lottie and others @ DJMAG 200th Issue Party @ Turnmills. Playing Camden Palace and SW1 on numerous nights. RM: Where do you personally go when you go out clubbing? MH: Camden Palace, Purple Turtle, Fabric, The End and in the summer months you can’t beat the atmosphere and the people at free party’s. RM: Who do you personally rate production wise and DJ wise? MH: Past: Tony De Vit, Baby Doc, Commander Tom, Pablo Gargano, Dave Randall, Signum, Lab 4, Hardfloor, Jon the Dentist, Carl Cox, Luke Slater, CJ Bolland, Dave Clarke, Pascal Feos, Chris Liberator, Dave the Drummer Present: Mark EG, Justin Bourne, James Lawson, Nick Sentience, BK, Dave the Drummer, Chris Liberator, Corvin Dalek, Mauro Picotto and a lot of the Italian artists are wicked at the moment. Future: All the Mauro’s of the world, Uberdruck, Dave Roberston and a lot more Less known European producers will be coming through making wicked techno and trance. RM: What tunes are you currently playing at the moment that make the dance floor erupt? MH: Arsonist White label (Rip off of Prodigy – Firestarter) Uberdruck stuff is nice and fresh New One Inch stuff is going down well also RM: Have you ever attempted to produce any material yourself or are you strictly a DJ? MH: I have been working on tunes with other close friends and we are planning some big things to come out from Hands on records ,watch this space. RM: What plans do you have for the future DJ wise and the shop? MH: It keeps growing as does all the people involved with it, our studio is now fully operational and we have had people making and releasing some quality tunes .The Website is also now fully online with 1,000’s of top tunes online available to order. We are getting 1,000’s of hits and have DJ’s all over the UK and overseas using our services. There’s an interactive message board for all you want to spill about the best night or tune of your life. I am working closely with many other artists and organisations and am trying to bring all the aspects of the whole industry to one place. Keen to keep developing the shop, studio and website and also help others with promotions / production / manufacturing / DJ tuition and youth projects. There are many big plans that have developed. My DJing continues to grow and I have gigs lined up throughout the coming years at a massive variety of venues. I’m back to the Dam again ,also Bagleys and The Fridge soon with our 8th Birthday for the shop coming up soon. Also I am keen to keep supporting smaller nights and underground party’s. RM: One last one, what line up would you love to witness as a clubber? (Past DJs with Present). MH: I’d love to experience clubs with loads of arenas again and types of music with good chill out zones being able to go outside if you want basically not be so restricted in one environment with variety between the music creating more unity. Like the Days of Sterns 4 or 5 floors with an outside tea garden and 3000 ravers turning up every week and partying till Ridiculous o’clock the next afternoon. Longer licensing hours of course - 24hr would be great! Wishful thinking!!! DJ’s would have to include Mauro Picotto,Carl Cox,as well as many I’ve mentioned already.
