Hardware Launch Party - Review

After taking ages to drag myself reluctantly at the very last minute from the final notes of the night that was Convergence at Egg, I missed the Hardware free party bus . So I headed on down with other bewildered stragglers on a less than cheery London Transport bus to see what warming happy goods Hardware would have to offer on this cold damp Sunday morning...
I had been to The Office only once before on a random night outing when it was filled with pop, R&B and garage beats and cliquey groups of girls drinking Alco pops – it could only get better!
The Hardware crew had made many promises for this new Sunday morning club bosh – the line up of El Greko, BK, Guffy, Donna Birt, Shaf De Bass, Danny Gilligan and Lucy Fur certainly made for a good start.
As I arrived welcoming smiles greeted me on the door; Will and Dickon overseeing entry and the Office team… it had clearly been a long night for these two judging by their drooping eyelids and they were still looking after us as clubber after clubber disappeared through the doors.
The door staff were firm, thorough and business-like with checks before I then headed down the brightly lit stairs to the club, momentarily baffled by the huge mirror half way down, to find an already thronging mass having it to BK who was part way through his set.
The club had touches of décor - the walls were decked in cyber-print and the bar was fittingly glowing UV. The minimalist lighting rig was adequate to give the club some atmosphere, readily made less important by the warm and friendly crowd below it. The club was comfortably full of clubbers with the floor and chairs well used as we settled in for the morning.
Ben played an outstanding eclectic set drawing from techno crossover, classic hard house and remixed trance and old skool classics setting the crowd off into mad bouts of stomping with each freshly dropped tune, including slipping in TDV’s ‘Are you all ready?’ before finishing beautifully with The Prodigy’s ‘No Good (Start the dance).
Guffy took over bringing down the pitch but not the mood, delivering a tech trance set with some hard trance intermingled, including the awesome Jen’s ‘Loop & Tings – relooped’ that set my head a-tingling. Though his set was tight and driving, it was all a bit of a shock to the system after the hoovers and grind of Convergence! The majority of the crowd carried on, albeit in a more relaxed manner but I took a well-needed break to catch up with mates, sit, chill and chat.
My head and legs soon felt more lifelike and I again joined the throng when Donna took over. She took the pace back up a notch delivering a quality hard set overflowing with floor fillers such as DK8’s ‘Murder was the bass’, Paul Glazby and The Narcomaniac's ‘Acid Disco’ and Ian M’s ‘Crazy Pills’. The crowd responded with glee and again went for it massively!
Shaf arrived and carried on the journey with some well-chosen hard house and trance moving the crowd with ease, who were whooping and jumping around like mad things even with four hours of partying already gone!
Despite Danny's arrival and Lucy’s set still to come, I decided I was just not hardcore enough to stay the distance . I sadly said my goodbyes and headed out home knowing that this experience should definitely be repeated.
Hardware certainly kept its promises giving something for everyone in the hard dance world. A quality line-up with both established DJ’s and up-n-coming young guns from London’s underground scene and a music diversity that was refreshing and stimulating. Bring on the next one!
Big thanks to Em and the Frantic crew who put the graft in to make this morning work so well.
