Twisted's Christmas Panto@SE1: Prime Mover LIVE

Reported by littlemissgenki / Submitted 05-02-04 02:20

It was a cold dark night in deepest darkest Hackney, made even colder and darker as a dark cloud had been hanging over me—yes, dear reader, it was the beginning of my birthday week, and I was resisting the temptation to stay at the first of several birthday parties thrown by well meaning friends and attempt to drink 15 cans of Stella (although given that my new found older age seems to equate to a puzzling reduction in alcohol tolerance, 5 would probably have sufficed…). But after seeing Prime Mover’s incredible dj set at Evolution @the Fridge the previous Friday, the thought of their first live PA at Twisted @SE1 propelled even an ol tart like me on...

Entering the dungeons that are SE1 it was apparent that this was a very special Christmas party indeed. As usual, the Twisted crew had taken their claim to some of the best production in London seriously and the concrete caves had been transformed into a postmodern winter wonderland, complete with the big spikey balls we know and love and awesome lights. Production company Visual Reality had in fact spent six weeks getting this right and it really showed, with incredible special effects, lasers, bubbles, snow and ticker tape all laid on for our visual pleasure throughout the night.

In the main room Brad Thatcher already had a good-sized crowd stomping hard to his tough euphoric beats. It was especially good to see that a few had made the effort to dress up for the occasion, with cyberkids in fluffy christmassy stuff with tinsley decorations and wings getting into the Christmas spirit next to glamour pusses and the usual jeans and T-shirt brigade. Twisted always draws a diverse up for it crowd, and Brad was putting them through their paces with tracks like Colin Barret’s ‘Stop the Rock’, Jobabe’s mix of Rowland & Wright’s ‘Getting Hot’, ‘K4@ and Ben Kay vs Deeprose & Thompson’s ‘I’m Your DJ’.

But (unlike me) the night was still young and the tension in the main room continued to build. Playing before the likes of industry legends Prime Mover could make even the most experience dj in Ibiza shiver in their shoes, but laid back Aussie Brad pulled it off no worries, mate. Helping close the final curtain on Camden Palace @ Heat’s The Final Curtain on February 21, Thatcher is definitely a rising star to watch out for in 2004.

Finally our wait was over and it was time for Prime Mover’s live PA to hit the stage. The atmosphere in SE1 was electric by now—it really felt like a proper gig and Aaron’s red guitar just added to the arena-like vibe. Starting out with a with a low key breakbeat sounding track, it wasn’t long before they proceeded to go mental to one of my favourite dance anthems of all time, Breather ‘Come On’. Talk about starting with a bang! Next up was ‘Feel What I Feel’ and ‘Runaway’ as Dave and Aaron dispelled any notion of just being your run of the mill djs. No, this was something else, and their respective musical backgrounds combined to create a wall of sound like nothing I’d heard for a very long time.

Dancing away I noticed that while the crowd had grown considerably for their set, the mix had been further shaken. Peering through the awesome lasers, bubbles and assorted visual treats, many a dj could be found taking in this rare and unique experience. And even if you weren’t up for playing spot the dj, there was definitely an extraordinarily large number of bedroom djs and producers who’d braved the elements and come out of hibernation for this very special Christmas aural and visual onslaught.

The thing with Prime Mover is every tune is indeed a TUNE, and not only was their live PA impeccable, but I for one enjoyed the mixing games they were playing. Like the heavy rock song of their namesake, to say they went all out was an understatement. Next up ‘Existence’ tore up the dancefloor, followed by another mix of Breather ‘Come On’, then ‘Here’s Johnny’. By now the full visual impact of their show was really kicking in, with the bubbles and snow just adding to the lighting extravaganza.

All good things must come to an end, and too soon the grand finale of Prime Mover classic ‘Black Dogs’ had us wanting more. But the Twisted team had more stars up their sleeves in this very twisted Christmas panto, and Riot! and Twist golden boy Danny Gilligan had the unenviable task of taking over from a very hard act to follow indeed. Fortunately Gilligan is no stranger to danger, and managed to completely take the mood in the main room to another level with a Nick Sentience remix of—what else(!?!)—‘Twisted’, mixed into one of the bounciest tracks around—99th Floor Elevators’ ‘Hooked’. We were indeed hooked as the lasers and visuals kept us glued to the dance floor.

Danny was certainly ‘On a Roll’ so it made sense to drop the Nick Sentience and James Lawson tune of the same name to a great crowd response. Another blinder was Gilligan’s own ‘Kill Bill’, which went down harder than Jordan at an FA Cup final afterparty. Out of the things that belong in the Australian outback, methinks Katie and the crocks go hand in hand but I digress…

It was time for me to put on my reviewer’s hat and explore and came across the Brain Wave stall at the back of the room behind the bar. Queues of clubbers were waiting to try this wicked new natural high--yes, that's exactly what it is. There's be a feature up about it in the next couple of days, as it's going to be back at Twisted this weekend.

I then checked out Deep Blue for the first time all night, where Disciples of Sound were laying down their smooth funky house beats to a dedicated following. The atmosphere was chilled and uplifting, perfect for some time out from the full-on assault of the main room. Deep Blue’s comfortable couches and soft lighting are solace for the most jaded clubber—however, solace wasn’t what I was after right now, and it was back to the main room where unbeknownst to me James Lawson had snuck on and was pounding out some superb hard trance.

James Lawson is one of my favourite djs and tonight was no disappointment as he blew me away with a wicked dark and dirty hard trance set. Just don’t ask me what he played—I was far too engrossed in that idyllic combination of hard fast beats, blinding lasers, pretty colours with the odd bubble swarm popping around. And no I wasn’t on hallucinogens—the production really was the best you’ll see in London if you like to be visually challenged. It was the first time my friend Annaleigh had been to SE1 and she was loving it, and Mr Lawson had even helped me forget about my impending old age.

Finally, the last act of this twisted Christmas panto took to the decks. Out of all the djs/producers to really progress in 2003, Glazby has certainly got darker and darker and with tracks like ‘Hostile’ and ‘Outta My House’ he’s got golden glowsticks coming out his ears. At this point I had the good fortune to bump into my mate Mark who does lights for Halo, the lighting company working with Visual Reality, so got to see most of Glazby’s set from a couple of feet away in the lighting box. The lasers and lights matched with Glazby's mixing blew me away, though it was way too smokey for any clear pictures by this stage of the game. But don't worry, I still refrained from drinking any StellaWink

Congrats and thanks to the Twisted crew for a fab Christmas party. Kate you are a star!Star Mmmwwah!

Thanks to Nat for the wicked photosThank you, thank you!Mmmwwah!

"Starting out with a with a low key breakbeat sounding track"..... that was the best track the played - very original with live guitar from Aron..... don't know how it could be considered low key though - it was the track of the night for me!
