Redtrip presents Corrosive @ The Telegraph, Brixton - Review

Before Friday I had never actually been to a Redtrip event or The Telegraph so when on Wednesday evening I received the chance to review one of their events, I jumped at the chance. At about 8.30pm (a little later than I had actually planned) I made my cross city journey from my home in Leytonstone to Brixton arriving at The Telegraph just short of an hour later – the venue looking nothing like I had imagined it to.
There was no queue and the doorman told me to go straight inside. Walking in through the small foyer with a cloakroom to the right of me I ordered myself a beer (drinks being sold at pub prices not club prices) in the smaller first room, The Bassline Bunker where the DJ was playing Breaks to an assortment of people socializing on the sofas. Having never been to The Telegraph before I was quite surprised at the layout of the place, expecting the smaller room to be tucked around the back somewhere! I left The Bassline Bunker and headed up a small flight of stairs to the larger Panic Room. The place was still fairly empty as the crew were putting the finishing touches to setting the room up. I soon spotted Slacky (one of the rather large group of promoters) talking to a couple of guys on the stage and went over to introduce myself. I was greeted very warmly and in turn was introduced to a few of the crew, Jolene, Flip and K- Tech.

At about 9.45pm the lights went down low and the music got going properly with with DJ’s Gimeq and Audio Response pumping out techno through the venue’s Martin Soundsystem. Slowly but surely the place started to fill and I quickly found myself bouncing around on the dancefloor with a few other people.
The night being spread over two rooms, each with a totally different music policy I found myself wandering between them trying to get a feel for both. The music policy in the Bassline Bunker was strictly Breaks and Drum & Bass – not what I would usually find myself listening to but the atmosphere was friendly and warm with resident MCs Steelz and Hyper taking it in on the microphone. I don’t usually like MCs over any type of music but to be fair these guys were good and I did stay in the room and listen to them for a while.

Back in the Panic Room it was Zoology resident, B.S.E’s turn to take to the decks and unleash some acid onto the growing crowd of clubbers on the dancefloor, kicking off with some slightly slower techno but soon taking it into the acid / techno sound made notorious by the likes of producers on labels like Stay Up Forever and Raw. I’d never actually seen B.S.E play before and judging by that performance it hopefully won’t be the last. (Well it wasn’t – he played b2b with Slacky later.)
At midnight Redtrip resident Wonga! got behind the decks to play some Hard Trance and NRG giving B.S.E a well deserved break. The atmosphere within The Telegraph became more and more apparent as the mood and music evolved from Techno into Hard Dance. By the time 1am came the dancefloor was about half full and it was Logic resident and headlining DJ, Rubec’s turn to grace the decks. His Hard Trance set seemed to go down well with the assorted crowd on the dancefloor. One of the nice things I found about the whole event was the way that the whole atmosphere of the party as well as the people on the dancefloor was totally unpretentious, like you would find in some places. It was nice to hear techno next to hard dance and NRG - not just a couple of tunes dropped in now and again but entire sets changing the mood for the better.
At about 2am was when I was really starting to get worse for wear. This was when resident and promoter Slacky took over for 45 mins and then proceeded to play an acid techno set back to back with B.S.E at 2.45 – 3.15am. I distinctly remember one tune from the set, that behind D.A.V.E the Drummers massive remix of Acid Disco by Paul Glazby. I got the impression that the rest of the crowd really appreciated this one to as I watched the people sitting around the sides frantically try to get to the dancefloor. It was also around this time I escaped into the Bassline Bunker to catch the end of Pearsall’s drum and Bass set.

Following the acid techno came my favourite act of the night. K-Tech took to the stage to play a live PA consisting of some really hard NRG complete with huge basslines and nagging 303s. Iwas quite simply glued to the dancefloor for the 45 minutes that this guy was on. Personally I absolutely love live acts and K-Tech did not fail to deliver. His entire set was both uplifting yet energetic and dark. I hope to see a lot more of this act in the future.
The last set of the night came in the form of Flip playing a back to back classic acid trance set with G-Whizz. The set was supposed to go on longer than it actually did and for this reason they didn’t really get to take it into Freeform towards the end of the set which was unfortunate. However I did get given a CD mixed by Flip so I can know what to expect from the pair at the next event in April.
The night ended just over half an hour short of what it was supposed to. I took the chance to chat to a couple of the DJs , G Whizz (a very friendly guy) and Flip who complained (and quite rightfully so) that he never got to play any Freeform. I also picked up a couple of freebies – 2 CDs. The first was a mix by Flip entitled Got Acid? And the second was a couple of tracks that K-Tech had made. Both were excellent, Flip’s mix in a similar vein to something like one of Kevin Energy’s mix CD’s but showcasing a far more acidic feel, starting with Acid Trance and progressing into 303 laced Freeform. K-Techs CD was also a great little freebie – four original Tech infused Hard NRG tracks with an organic sounding, psychedelic feel to them. (The only way I can describe them). I said my goodbyes and left The Telegraph shortly after with a smile on my face, briefly stopping off at George IV to catch the end of Tronic and the start of Crossover, before falling asleep on the tube and waking up in fu***ng Upton Park.

Verdict: Friday the 13th is supposedly a day where what can possibly go wrong inevitably will. Well the only thing that went wrong was the management deciding to shut the place early. The rest of the night went without any problems. Whether this was because most of the night took place in the early hours of Saturday morning or because of the obvious time, hard work and effort the promoters put into making a Redtrip event a little different and a little special – I’ll leave for you to decide. One of the things I especially enjoyed was the music policy (similar to Antiworld’s). The unpretentious, totally up for it crowd were equally happy dancing to Techno, Acid Techno, Hard Dance, NRG and Acid Trance and the crew were more than happy to provide it. I would just like to say a final thankyou to the Redtrip crew for giving me the opportunity to do my first HarderFaster review for their night. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and by the looks of things so did everybody else. See you all at the next one in April!

Cheers for the review Ash - I dont think I got the chance to meet ya - hopefully at the next one. A decent and fair review I think.
I actually spent most of the night in the Bassline Bunker flexing it with the MCs - so would love to give this side of the event some more support - although its tough finding a crowd that flexible.
I have to give a shout for our Doorman NoStars who really had his work cut out trying to fend off the blaggers
