Trance On The Thames Reviewed Reported by josie / Submitted 01-09-04 17:59 You know when you see a really cool little spot, and say, ‘that would be so perfect for a party! You could have the decks there and maybe a little bar over there, and when it got dark it would be all lit up!’ Then your more sensible mate says scathingly, ‘don’t be ridiculous, you’d never be allowed’. Well, Pathfindersound and Knowwhere have either proved your sensible, disparaging mate wrong, or Ken Livingstone is a secret trance fiend who likes nothing more than getting proper nutted come the weekend. Trance on the Thames is a series of pre-parties held on a hundred square foot of sand under Festival Pier on the South Bank, and they’re absolutely ace. If, like me, you’re not sure where the pier is, you stand underneath the elegant white span of the London Eye as the sun goes down and wonder which way to turn. Then from along the river, there’s the faint insistent throb – a feeling rather than a sound – of dance music. Answer its call, turn north and there it is. A square of sand under the clinical, sparkling slope of the pier, a set of decks under a piece of canvas, and the look and feel of a mini festival in the centre of London. Weirdly heart-warming is the absolutely random cross-section of humanity you find yourself surrounded by. It’s a very successful mixture of those who knew it was on, and are there on purpose, and everyone else, who happened to be wandering by and couldn’t resist the lure. There’s clubbers, Mums and Dads with little kids obviously destined for long happy relationships with the club scene, and every size and shape of tourist. I personally saw a foreign woman, fifty if she was a day, kick off her shoes and go bonkers to Kadoc’s The Night Train. I even saw a beret. Anthony Dean had clearly gone into his favourite record store and asked for ‘a heap of tunes that will have people dancing like I’m shooting at their feet’ and got exactly that. His set was ideally pitched – lots of vocals and nice obvious breakdowns to cater for trance beginners, but still keeping it euphoric and driving for the old hands. Every track kicked ass, but particular highlights included Ferry Corsten’s camp, theatrical It’s Time, T78’s absorbing When The Sun Goes Down, ATB’s You’re Not Alone, with the brilliant Olive sample, a dark remix of Eurythmics’ Sweet Dreams, System F’s Out Of The Blue, and the fabulous, phenomenal Love Resurrection by Ian Betts. Double deckers stream silently over the bridge to the north, tube trains to the south. On every face is a broad smile, and a look that says ‘I don’t believe this’. Strangest of all is that dancers don’t face inwards towards the DJ, but out across the river. It made me feel quite weirdly choked. The next one, also the last, is actually on a boat, but will doubtless be of the same high quality. If every single ticket isn’t sold out within a few days, I’m going to seriously start questioning why I’m bothering to go to stuff and write about it. I’m staking my reputation on this one, and no smart aleck private messages about having nothing to lose!
