Ali in da USA Aiii! - San Francisco Diary

Reported by Ali Wilson (HF Intro) / Submitted 14-01-05 14:12

Winner of the HarderFaster best new producer in the 2003 HarderFaster awards, Ali Wilson continues to go from strength to strength. He's had tracks out on some of the top labels in the business, including Vicious Circle, Quality Tracks, Nukleuz, Flash Point, Peroxide, Honeypot and Arktic Records. Recent collaborations with the likes of Ed Real ('Monkey Techno', out soon on Riot Records), Matt Smallwood ('The Storm', on Nukleuz) and Greg Brookman ('Humanoid', also on Nukleuz) are getting rave reviews from the music press and support from loads of top names, yet his talents outside of the studio also deserve attention.

After his 12-year old brother opted for decks for Christmas instead of a Nintendo when Ali was just 14, he became hooked to buying vinyl from an early age. Too young to play out, he did his time playing house parties for a couple of years, until finally playing at Ego at Sids Bar. He then played at Nutted at the Imperial Gardens, and after just six months, managed to score his first gig at Frantic. It was after that that things started to really take off, leading to residencies at Tilt and the now legendary Endorphin and Milk. 2005 is only going to see him get better and better! Here Ali takes us on an adventure with him on tour in the States...

Background
I met Mikey when he was over here last year and he saw me play and wanted to bring me over for their event in San Fran. He ran the event with 2 guys called Brendan and Ross. They run events every few months and have a cool little scene kicking off over there. That's pretty much it!

12th August 04
It’s Thursday mid morning and I turn up to a busy Heathrow airport where I meet Alex Calver who is joining me to play at Phaze 2. We set about getting checked in and find a huge que at the Virgin desk, realising there is only half an hour or so before check in closes. Luckily we hear a call for San Francisco from one of the staff and get to jump the que (phew)! After the checks we have a bit of breakfast and make our way to the gate to board the plane. After take off, Alex and I take full advantage of the free alcohol before passing out for a good proportion of the 8 hour flight. After landing we get off the plane to find it’s only just after mid-day in San Fran. We go through customs where we are thoroughly searched and questioned about the trip, then meet Mikey, Brendan & Ross who are the promoters and Mikey’s sister Letty, who tell us we have to wait a while for Nicki S, Eufex, Banga Matt, Phil Able and Matt K (a US techno DJ from Atlanta) to land who are also playing. We make our way to the hotel and have a good rest after the long day.

13th August 04 – Phaze 1
Everyone gets up around mid afternoon and make their way to get some food and spend the afternoon in a record shop, the jetlag seeming not to have hit us yet. Once we’ve gone through all the records (picking up some nice back catalogue techno), we go back to the hotel and get ready for Phaze 1 - the first night.

The line-up is: (In order)

A10
Reclipse
Dekota and Achilles
Viticus
Phil Able
Nicki S
Banga Matt
Eufex
Little Miss Natalie

After a half hour drive I get into the club about 11pm to find it is a dis-used warehouse, with a wicked, illegal, old skool style party vibe. A huge projection takes up a whole wall which gives a very surreal effect which gives the place a very trippy atmosphere. Dekota and Achilles are pumping out the sounds, with a cool mix of hard dance tracks that have the venue rocking nicely. Viticus is on the decks next playing a wide range of styles of hard house, techno and trance, all very tough and uplifting with lots of cutting, all in all a solid set! Next up is all round top man, Phil Able who takes the bull by the horns and delivers a tough high energy set of which the Americans take to very well. Following on from there is Nicki S. She wastes no time and before you know it the crowd are stomping away.

Banga Matt takes over after Nicki and takes it down a little with some wicked tough funky techno for a while then builds it up again which works well and keeps the crowd firmly on the floor! Eufex is next up; he follows the tough funky edged sound that Matt has played with plenty of his own trademark sound tracks which the Americans love. Little Miss Natalie steps up next and pushes things to the next level with some fierce, speaker popping hard-house that finishes the crowd off for the last set. It’s 6am and all in all a good night with a very satisfied crowd, but it doesn’t stop there, DJ Durty (US promoter and up & coming producer), Viticus, Nicki S, Banga Matt and Myself play a 5 hour b2b2b set for the after party in the same venue! After that we are thoroughly knackered so go and get some rest before Phaze 2.

14th August – Phaze 2

The lineup is: (In order)

Reclipse
Apot
Durty b2b Dekota
Viticus
Matt k
Alex Calver
Ali Wilson
Jekyll and Hyde

Myself, Banga and Letty make our way down to Phaze 2 via cab at around 10.15pm, it takes about 45 minutes and is over some huge bridges (a couple of miles long) which give a great view of the city by night. As we approach the club there is a police car driving slowly past the club to see what’s going on as clubs are not really legal in the US (it was almost like a scene out of a gangster film). We cruise around the block to find he has disappeared so we get ready and enter the club. Part of it is a Hip Hop recording studio so as you walk in and down the long hall way, the walls are full of Platinum discs. Viticus is playing as we enter, knocking out some pretty tough hard-style which seems to be setting the pace. Next up is Matt K who recently had a release on Alex Calver’s ‘Glitch’ label, he plays some nice tough grinding techno that keeps the crowd on their toes and sets the stage for Mr Calver. Alex follows with lots of his own unique tracks like Subsonix 2 and Glitch 6 that get everybody fired right up and stomping away. I take over after Alex and play a mixture of techno and trance, all with a tough and techy edge. The Are you all ready/Age of love bootleg myself and Matt Smallwood produced gets a good reaction finishes my set off nicely for Jekyll and Hyde to take over who have a release up coming on Subsonix 3 - Alex Calver vs. Ross Farley & Brendan Culver - Crank This Mother Fucker Up. They finish off with a quality hard as nails set that does the business on the floor. Overall really enjoyed the night and the whole trip especially the massive 1.5 pint cans of beer hehe! The Americans seem to have a wicked scene kicking off over there, and I look forward to playing out there again.

Big shouts and thanx goes out to Mikey, Brendan & Ross, and everyone we met out there! :o)

Ali is a legend. One of the few producers in the scene that has gotten his head around how techno works. Was a pleasure to release a pile of his tracks last year.

From: Phil Able on 24th Jan 2005 12:09.47
Good words mate, and nice to bump in2 you on Sat. For the record Mikey (DJ Viticus) and the SF crew are possibly the most hospitable, generous and enthusiastic loons i've ever hung out with. DJ Viticus will be gracing our shores soon so all make him feel at home (but don't ask him for i.d. every time he wants a beer)
