A Quick Interview with Tall Paul!

Reported by Paul Stix / Submitted 14-12-04 20:54

Tall Paul is The Gallery. Paul wears the club on his sleeve and plays from the heart. He began his DJing career at the tender age of 16 at Turnmills and even set up his own pirate radio station called Touchdown FM just so that he could play out more! The Tall one DJ’ed at the first ever Gallery night way back in 1995, and yet he still remains one of the most important players on today’s dance scene as The Gallery gets ready to celebrate its 10th Birthday in April 2005.

As Muzik Magazine’s former DJ of the Year (1998), the recent DJ Magazine Top 100 Poll only confirms Paul’s importance to clubland having retained his lofty Top 20 chart position with No.19 for the second consecutive year, beating a multitude of heavyweight spinners. As one of the original ‘Superstar’ DJs, alongside the likes of Carl Cox, Paul Oakenfold, Seb Fontaine and Judge Jules, it’s great to see that Paul’s status around the world remains as big as his 6ft 6” frame!! Together with his Gallery residency at Turnmills, London, he also has residencies out in the States both in Boston and New York, plus travels to the far corners of Ibiza, Australia, Europe and Asia every year.

As a Producer, Paul has recorded some classic dancefloor anthems during his career, most notably ‘Rock Da House’ and with ‘Let Me Show You’ under his Camisra moniker. He’s also remixed everyone from New Order to The Stone Roses and Duran Duran and is set to release his big new tune ‘Got It’ on Duty Free Records (his own label) later this month.

Having headlined HeatUK’s sublime South West Four festival this summer on Clapham Common, Tall Paul returns to play the all important Midnight Set for Heat and The Gallery, as two of London’s biggest promotions join forces to host HEATNYE at Brixton Academy this New Year’s Eve.

Congratulations on retaining your superb No.19 position in the recent DJ Mag Top 100 Poll…

It’s nice to be acknowledged and it seems that the importance of that chart really grows every year, especially with bookings outside of England where people do look seriously at the Top 100 list. I’m really pleased to be No.19 for the 2nd year running, it does mean a lot to me. I’d like to thank everybody at The Gallery, everyone who hits my website and everyone who comes to see him play internationally.

What’s been your highlights of 2004?

I had lots of fun in Ibiza this year doing stuff with Cream, which was great. America is still very strong for me and a couple of LA gigs in particular were really special. Plus of course The Gallery has been going from strength to strength here in London and I really enjoyed the SW4 gig on Clapham Common.

The Gallery’s been going for nearly 10 years now. What changes have you seen take place over the past 12 months?

I think with The Gallery this year, it’s seen a big upheaval in music and talent coming through. We’ve done our best to expose this talent and new sounds and I think people really appreciate that. The main floor has such a wide variety of music now and The Gallery continues to be a great place for people to wind-down after a hard week’s work and just let yourself go. From a DJing point of view, I can see what sought of music is being sent through on the promotional side and there’s so much good production and sounds coming through which really excites us all down here.

This NYE you’re in the UK to headline The Gallery’s massive event with Heat at Brixton Academy. Are you looking forward to it?

Yeah it’s nice to spend New Year’s Eve in London for once!! The last couple of times I’ve spent them abroad. I had lots of fun down at the Clapham Common gig at the end of the summer with the Heat guys and I’m looking forward to a similar sort of atmosphere down at the Academy. It’ll be a nice to be in my hometown!!

You’re playing the midnight set. How special is that for you?

Playing a midnight set for a DJ is very important. A couple of times I’ve been stuck at airports and in cars and it’s all very well getting to the next gig which is great but it’s always nice to be on the dancefloor somewhere for 12am. I’m really looking forward to it, especially as I haven’t done New Year’s Eve at Brixton before. I know the Heat guys will be doing a great production and they’re known for the harder stuff which is cool. Bringing The Gallery together will be a great match because we like to keep it very open minded and very eclectic as far as that goes.

Your fans will be eager to know what you’ve been up to in the studio of late?

I’ve been in the studio quite a bit recently, working with our new in-house engineer Dave Parkinson aka Deep Faze… little shout out there to Dave for his top production!! We’ve got a new tune coming out on Duty Free called ‘Got It’ and something I’ve just finished off in the States, a written vocal track called ‘Common Ground’ - both will be out in the New Year. I’m very excited about them both and I’ve got some great mixes of ‘Got It’ by Anil Chawla & Dale Anderson, Jark Prongo and Deep Faze.

How would you describe what you’re playing at the moment?

My sets are really varying at the moment. Big chunky house. Piano tracks I think are really coming back in at the moment like they do every 4 or 5 years (!) I like a lot of trancey stuff, but on a slower tempo and I like the fusion between rock guitar sounds with some heavier beats. Like I said before, there’s a lot of really good music coming through this year and hopefully this will keep on into next year.

And finally… when you’re at home relaxing with the family, what are listening to these days?

The best way for me to listen to stuff is in the car and at the moment I’m listening to a Snow Patrol CD, a chilled out mix from a magazine and an old Tricky ‘Back To Mine’, which is really cool.

The decks in the main room at Turnmills are unusally high (and for a lanky git like me that can only be a goods thing)

From: Dan Cheshire Cat on 22nd Dec 2004 13:14.04
He's a top bloke and a dance music legend. And... he used to play at 4 Cheshire St!! (the apartment next to mine.) In fact the last ever party they held here (before they got evicted due to their parties, ahem!) was the week before I moved in.
