Frantic Brings You More Preview with Captain Tinrib!

Reported by benz / Submitted 02-02-05 02:12

Since before hard house was hard house, and we all called it 'hardbag', there have been a few names synonymous with this harder, energetic style of dance music. Undoubtedly one of them is Captain Tinrib - a true hard house powerhouse, with a penchant for all things nautical, and a very interesting dress sense (see the pictures - Hawaiian shirts and skiing goggles?!). He released his first track way back in 1991 ('Nuclear Powered E.P.' under the Morphasis guise), and it was in 1995 that he set up his now legendary nu-nrg imprint Tinrib Recordings. At that time he went under the name of D.R. Base, and the first release on Tinrib had a collaboration with a little-known French producer called Karim Lamouri on one side called 'Barracuda', and a track named 'Funky 303' on the other. Little did he know that it would grow into one of the most respected and popular labels in hard house history.

Over the next 7 years, the label amassed momentum, with dozens of all-time classics being released - Captain Tinrib & RR Fierce's recently remixed 'Street Tab' (7 years on and the original still stands the test of time), incredibly talented producer Weirdo with amazing hard trancers such as 'Whiplash' and 'I Know A Plaice', and Captain Tinrib's cheeky 'Blue Oyster' amongst others. The label catered for the tough, banging sounds of nu-nrg, with the occasional slices of highly uplifting hard trance. Sister label Dirty House Grooves was set up to provide the market with slower, funkier material, somewhere between funky house and hard house (in an Untidy Dubs sort of vein). Several volumes of the 'Fish Tales' compilation series were released on CD to showcase the label's sound, and Weirdo produced two excellent albums for the label to critical acclaim.

The label closed in late 2002, and The Captain took some time off to 'get his sh*t together' and re-assess battle plans. The past 12 months have seen him make an impressive comeback into the world of hard dance, with new tracks co-produced with Karim and Max The Alien Thing re-establishing him as a force to be reckoned with, and his fantastic, 100% live show causing pandemonium across the country. His first London appearence of the year is at Frantic Brings You More on February 12th at The SeOne - I managed to get a few weirds out of this crazy loon of a Captain amidst his hectic scehdule of DJing, producing, PA'ing, fishing, and mutiny...

Ahoy there matey! How does it feel to be back in on top of the world of hard dance? Or did you never really go away?

Me ships have all been fixed back up, re- stocked and ready for duty me hearties. Yes, land lubbers I did disappear for a year. Had to train my latest recruit, lil Fishcookie, the ways of the seven seas.

For any people who may not know, would you care to describe the kind of music you produce and DJ?

Hard Trance, Hard House, Hard Dance, Hard NRG, Acid Techno, Straightish Techno, Disco, Opera, Banging, Chart Remix, 150ish slice of da action with Live Percussion for guys like you Mickey, who made it thru 2001!

Your label Tinrib will go down in history as one of the most influential and respected hard house labels to ever exist. Do you ever think about the fact that you have helped to leave this musical legacy imprinted in the minds of so many people worldwide?

More and more I’m told this by fellow party goers. I’m honoured and overwhelmed when this happens. Hard to respond to sometimes, especially when your told that ‘you’re the sickest c**t!’

Just waiting for that big party to be promoted to Admiral by someone on stage at the end of the performance! The ceremony may happen this summer. Keep them peeled.

Did you ever release anything on the label that you look back on now and think, “hmm, that was pretty crap”?

Not really no, tend to remember the good points and think forward to what’s ‘appenin’ next rather then thinking back to whats pretty & crap!? Drag Pusher rings a bell now thinking about it for a minute.

Moving on, you recently re-entered the world of hard house production with a slew of highly acclaimed releases. Is your outlook on making music the same as it has ever been of do you feel in a different state of mind to say, two years ago?

New ship, new dock, new sounds & new goals. Anything goes. Big Nose. No ties to a label, so anything is possible now.

Have you been making tracks in any other styles? I seem to remember some housier numbers on Tinrib back in the day…

Yeah man, we released 12 tracks of Lighter Hard House ilk on our sister label, ‘Dirty House Grooves.’ Recently I’ve done some Techno with Dave Randall which is coming out on Andy Farley’s label ‘Blue.’ Acid Techno has been done with Max – ‘The Alien Whore’ – Acid Gate Scandal, which is due out on Vicious Circle any day now! Loads of new stuff is happening in the next month, so keep them peeled on the www.captaintinrib.com site for the latest info.

What about your occasional night Fish!/Superfish! ? Will these legendary nights be seeing a return to London at any time? Some of the best hard dance nights ever to be witnessed in the capital I’ve been told…

Yeah, those nights are to be remembered, or not as in most cases due to having such a good time!!! Plans of doing another Superfish! are currently going through with all our residents. DFQ, Steve Thomas, Dave Randall, Max – Alien Thing, Simon Eve, Sol Ray, Rubec, Weirdo + more. This is planned for April in London & May in Bristol. Again check the website.

You have been ripping up clubs recently with your sensational live PA experience fishstravaganza. Could you tell us about it please? What equipment do you use, what tracks do you play, do you sing etc….

The Live Show has really taken off in the last year. More shows than ever. A lot of this is due to the liveness of it all, I feel. I currently use Ableton Live 4 on a Powerbook G4. There is a backing track down and I have to fill in the parts missing live. I have a Kenton MIDI controller with 16 channels of different loops & 4 different synths firing thru – a bit like having 16 record decks but with controllable live synths! Hard to remember whats what, but it does definitely adds to the whole sound. Different every time. Some shows I don’t know whats completely going on myself. This makes it more fun and live. 75% is new 25% are the Tinrib best ofs. And, if that’s not enough, quite often you’ll find the Captain with his percussionist, ‘Chris ‘The Real Drummer’ Edwards no less!

Anything is possible. Any track can happen. Some parts are made up there and then as the guys in Christchurch, New Zealand will tell you; after the one hour live show was 2 hours in the end and some of the clubbers were giving us a hand or 2!!!

You will be bringing your live shennanigans to the massive Frantic Brings You More @ The SeOne on February 12th. What are you feelings about this party? Who else on the line-up will you be checking out?

I love playing at SE1. It’s a mad joint. Go thru a door and its totally different music. Very easy to get lost and stuck in different arenas! Especially when you take the balloons for transport! I’ll be checking out the whole event no doubt, as usual. First ones in, last ones out usually!

The Funktion One soundsystem will be present in the main room. Have you ever performed with this behemoth of a rig before?

I haven’t, no. Every other room though! I’m sure we’ll give it a run for its money.

Did you ever used to go to The SeOne when it was still known as The Drome? Got any twisted memories of it?

I have a few vague memories. A long time ago. Normally went there and to the Paradise Club in Islington back in the day.

Pray tell, sorry if you’ve been asked this question before but I don’t know the answer, hence why I am asking – why the nautical theme?

Because Eye ist a Captain! Prefer boats to planes. Greater swashbuckling adventures at sea!

What are the most important things in your life?

Family now that we have a little Fish on deck.

Tell us something we didn’t know about Captain Tinrib.

Never done much land driving due to me Nautical skills, decided to do the land lubber driving test next month. You may find him driving his land ship!

And finally, what has been the worst track/song you have heard recently?

Checked Radio One today. Best: ‘Push The Button’ Worst: ?

Seems a long time since Fish at the Soundshaft and Karim taking Hardbag tracks to the studio speeding them up and then playing them on acetate! Or Tinrib blowing the power at Frantic at the Rocket in 1999 so the whole venue was in darkness for 5 minutes! lol
