Old Skool Euphoria Preview: Interview with Ellisdee

Reported by Macavity / Submitted 14-04-05 12:08

For most people these days the prospect of being in the same job for nearly 20 years would be tantamount to torture. But this certainly isn’t the case for rave legend Ellisdee. 17 years after he first started playing at legendary parties such as The Dungeons and Fantazia, Roy (his real name) is still as just passionate about the scene.

Today, his dance music repertoire has evolved to include a range of styles including his current passion, breaks. But apart from delighting crowds with his cutting edge sounds he still gets the same buzz as he used to delighting crowds with Old Skool sets, which take clubbers on a nostalgic and hedonistic trip back to the early 90s. This is exactly what Ellisdee intends to do on Saturday 23rd, April when Old Skool Euphoria returns to its adopted home The Fridge. I asked him a few questions...

You’re re-launching your record label Point Blank. What type of records can we expect on the label and what is going to be you first release? Tell us about the style of music you like?

The first release is by myself and Syrus who is co-owner of label. It will be mainly the tougher side of breaks with plenty of energy, but not dark. Later on in the year we'll be launching another label for the more funkier side of breaks. I love both styles.

In an old interview you are quoted as staying that you used to love the acid house days because you could drop any genre track you like. Apparently you used to drop ‘Why’ by Carly Simon just after playing an acid record. Do you think you could do anything that wacky these days and if so what ‘odd’ track would you like to drop in a The Fridge on 23 April.

I don’t think you could get away with dropping a tune that was as old as the Carly Simon into a set nowadays, but you never know, come down and see!

What’s the most legendary party/rave that you’ve ever played at/? Do you have any good stories to tell.

Probably my most memorable part that I played at was ‘Fantasia Summer Time’ in '92 at Matchams Park in Bournemouth. I played the last set, which was between 7 and 8 in the morning to about 10,000 people. The sun was beaming down, the DJ box was 30 foot up in the air, and the atmosphere was great. I have loads of other stories but you probably couldn’t print them!

Fantazia on 19th April 1991 was the first massive alongside Sasha, Carl Cox, Jumping Jack Frost etc. Can you remember playing this party.

I think you are talking about the party I have just described.

Apart from playing a lot of breakbeat. Where do you play apart from Old Skool events?

I am still getting booked to play all over the world, which is just amazing.

Apparently your mix tapes performing as a PA under the name “Rhythm Section” are classics to this day. Have you ever seen one of them, or any of your stuff on ebay and how much did it go for?

We used to do a lot of EPs when we were pa’ing as 'Rhythm Section'. The most popular was the 'Coming on Strong' EP which used to change hands for £100 if you could get one. Although with all the bootlegging that goes on today I would think you could get one for silly money now. Never Mind!

How did you get into DJing and the rave scene. Are you glad you did?

I got into Djing through a pure love of music, not for money. My career has taken me all over the world many times. It's one of the only jobs I know where you get paid for something you really love doing and where you get to watch some nice women shakin their butts at the same time!

Are you fed up of people debating whether dance music is dead or not? What are your thoughts on this?

People have been talking about dance music dying for ages but it's still here. People will always want to go out and dance at the weekend so I don’t buy into that theory.

What club nights do you really enjoying going to?

I really enjoyed events like Hum in London, Trigger in Birmingham, Fabric in London.

You’ve played at Old Skool Euphoria at The Fridge before. Did you enjoy it and what plans to you have for this time?

I thought the last Old Skool Euphoria event was really good. It was a nice crowd that were up for a good time with no trouble and plenty of women (hi to Lisa from Camden) and a great atmosphere. I’m looking forward to playing there at the next one and have dug deep into the archives for some proper old tunes.

Thanks to Roy for his time and photography.
