Review: Playtime for 2 PhUnKeD uP! Reported by 2 PhUnKeD uP / Submitted 13-05-05 19:00 It’s 10:30 and the last of the balloons are being blown up to show the big golden 3. Most promotions don’t even last past their 3rd event but this is no ordinary promotion. It’s London Jackin’ Week and this is Playtime’s 3rd Birthday! With all the hype surrounding this month’s Timeout Critic Pick, Mixmag’s No.1 Club in London (Feb 05) and one of DJ Mag’s Top Nights in London, anticipation was naturally set at the highest point of expectation. On arrival we gave the signal that we were here to scrutinise and review (it always helps to strike fear from the word go!) but this did not seem to deter the friendly and sincere welcome we got from the doormen. Walking through the stylish Playtime coated entrance we discovered security and various other staff still sorting last minute details and decorations so we decided it best to chillax on the Courtyard loungers to consider the next phase in our judgement plan. Mike Monday & Tim Sheridan Enter Mr Tim Sheridan and Mike Monday… Calm and casual, they stroll through the doors and we get up to greet. From Tim’s raised eyebrows we’re not sure if he’s impressed or weirded out by the fact that we’re here so early. “Keen as mustard,” I think the comment was. Anyway, introductions are made and they head inside to check that all systems are good to go but a few moments later Tim comes out and reckons, “Right, let’s get out of here and find an English pub!” We look at each other to see if we actually heard right… 5 minutes later we’re up the road in, can you believe it, an English pub, listening to Tim’s audacious tales of trekking through the Kalakuku Mountains of Gandagh (the what?!?!?!) and getting beginner’s lessons in how to piss off the locals in Mogadishu. We’re starting to get worried as we’re sure this nutter can’t be normal, I mean who has actually BEEN to Mogadishu, never mind perfected the art of pissing off the psychotic killers that make up the population (ever seen Black Hawk Down?); nah – just kidding – the truth is Tim is a world class character with a great number of years under his black musical belt and he can jump from being a nutter on stage straight to political conversations with unsuspecting zebs. It’s probably got something to do with living between Ibiza and Brixton. Anyway, here’s a little known fact he dropped on us - his Mum can mix it up (NO, not a cake) and is partial to New York Garage. It must be in the genes… Imagine going round to the Sheridan’s for a Sunday roast and a mix by his Mum… Anyway, Tim’s PR work sure did the trick for PLAYTIME and as we headed back into the club we almost believed we had just had a few beers with the NastyDirtySexMusic showman. Outside the lines have fattened up nicely while inside the bars are beginning to buzz. The great thing about Egg is that it’s spacious enough to mission around but the dance floors are just the right size to create that intimate vibe and bring the audience close together for the DJs to interact with. The upper floor is already warming up to the big, warm electronic beats of Geddes, exactly what you want to be hearing to set your night up. Come midnight and it’s time for a round of Tequilas before we head downstairs to witness the damage control of the Timinator. We bump into Big Daddy G on the way down and discover he won’t be “Playing the Time” as he has injured his back – hmmm – either he is avoiding the scrutiny of HarderFaster or he just wants to mash out the night properly instead of remaining sober??! We decide that his back is probably injured and take the sympathetic route. But we’ll get him next time. The Timinator It takes exactly 2 tracks for Tim to fill the dancefloor and in Playtime’s last review on HF (in April 05) Tim ends with quote: “if that’s what it’s like when I go to Playtime off duty, what’s it going to be like when I play!?” So much for the pressure we were trying to put on - he has the place absolutely heaving! Tim plays music for the people. There is no set rule in his selection except to play awesome muzak irrespective of pigeon holed genres. I guess that’s why the only way to describe the style is using the words NastyDirtySexMusic because each track contains a piece of the action. Playtime attracts a diverse mix of like minded people, gorgeous to look at and even better to party with. You can practically measure the vibe by the ‘Big smile count’ in every direction you turn. These people know good music and they know how to have a good time. The night always seems to go so quickly when the vibe is rocking or when you’re desperately trying to find some sort of fault or a glitch in the system to put down in your analysis. Three a.m. shows itself and Mike Monday is primed and charged to take the reigns. As is the infamous “Switch” upstairs. Mike rolls on the beats and pumps out the sounds with such energy that the crowd can’t help but get caught up in it. Suddenly, a black lace bra appears draped over the glass panel in front of the DJ Box and there is much guessing from us as to which belter it belongs to. But soon we’re immersed in the sounds again and all we really notice is that the DJ is enjoying himself as much as the crowd he is playing for. In all the madness we manage to meet a great chap, Moussa Clarke (otherwise known as Moose, a renowned international DJ & producer on many labels, he heads things up at “Oven Ready” and is the new studio dude for Steve Lawler’s productions.) He’s actually here to make sure Mike doesn’t enjoy himself too much as he is flying him to Moscow tomorrow for a gig in Mother Russia! HA~! TOO LATE SHE CRIED! THERE’S NO STOPPING THE MONDAY FROM TEARING THIS PLACE APART~! Mike Monday & Moose Upstairs the Twisted sounds of Switch are sending us way past our sell by dates. The floor is rocking properly and even Tim Sheridan has seen the wheels of his trolley roll out (sideways if we’re any judge . Playtime’s history of line-ups have been nothing but quality. From Meat Katie to Serge Santiago in the past – it’s no wonder their crowd just keeps coming back for more and tonight is no exception. Can’t quite remember how we got home and unfortunately we didn’t get to see “Paco” (the other guest in the line-up) so I guess we finally found a leg of criticism to stand on. There was just too much quality on all floors. Switch Whoever said that clubbing is not what it used to be is 100% correct – it’s way better than it used to be.
