Party techno, party music, party animal! The lowdown on hard dance’s newest prodigy, Jamie Taylor

“It’s official, Jamie Taylor is God.” A quotation from none other than long-term hard dance stalwart Tom Harding in iDJ Magazine earlier this year, in reference to Jamie’s first release on Riot! Records. Considering Jamie Taylor, aka Tik Tok, has only been around on the scene for little over a year and is only 21 years old, this is quite a statement to make. Yet, for those aware of Jamie’s awesome talent, it seems to sum him up brilliantly. Jamie's heavy-yet-funky party techno sound has already seen him compared to Marco Bailey, Timo Maas and DAVE The Drummer, and with heavyweight support coming from none other than Riot! Records head honchos Ed Real and BK, the future can only be extremely bright for Jamie. So what makes this young lad from Boston, Lincolnshire tick? I caught up with Jamie to get the exclusive lowdown on what is making him hard dance’s next superstar.
Ed Real on Jamie Taylor: As soon as I started speaking to Jamie about three years ago I knew that here was a young producer who had the ability to be world class. His debut EP on Riot! was one of the most hotly anticipated in our label’s history and the only record to achieve single of the month in both the hard dance and techno pages of Mixmag!
BK on Jamie Taylor: Jamie has had tracks in my playlist for the last year and a half. As a producer myself I’m always very picky as to what tracks I support particularly as I listen to both the whole track and how it's put together. Jamie is someone who always scores highly on both counts...
With support like this, Jamie has been attracting fans to his party techno sounds from all
over the globe. I also have a good reason to feel good about Jamie — he recently remixed my first ever solo single ‘The Darkness’ on Kompression Records, and gave it far more appeal than the original would ever have gotten! It’s not very often that production prodigys come along, and so when one as young as Jamie emerges, it’s really time to stand up and take note. With this in mind, I present to you Jamie Taylor.

Firstly, it must be incredible for you to be receiving such plaudits so early on in your career. How does it feel to have such solid support from the likes of Ed Real and BK?
It feels wicked be involved with them!! Ben's helped me a lot with production and with Ed is really supporting my sound. Having the support from the Riot! crew keeps me steamin in the studio!
You first started out, as many up and coming producers have done, via the website generoproject.com, and first came to the attention of many with fantastic tracks such as ‘Factory 18’. Did you ever imagine that within 2 years you’d be releasing tracks on some of the UK's biggest dance labels and drawing comparisons to the likes of Timo Maas and Marco Bailey?
I’ve always dreamed of getting played by the big DJs so I’ve worked very hard to get the sound I need but even today I’m still not happy with it just yet. There’s a lot more I need to focus on on the production side, the more I think like this I’ll keep working harder.
You’ve managed to carve yourself an impressive niche in the market with your unique sound of party techno fused with clever arrangement. If you had to describe your style, what would you say?
A lot of people class it as hard housey techno and some say ravey techno, I would say most of the stuff I’m doing at the minute is definitely on the party vibe. I really try and create that vibe where you get people smiling and jumping to your tunes. It feels good being at the club with people saying I’m trying to do something new and appreciating what I'm trying to do. The main thing is im always at hard dance clubs with friends and you always get the odd techno DJ there and there’s fuck all techno nights round here apart from your odd field trip, so I’m in a scene with crossover which makes me get the sound today. Partoiii!
You use software to create your tracks, which is unbelievable given the results you achieve. What is your studio set-up, and where does your inspiration come from to create a new track?
I use a program called Fruityloops mostly which is a loop based sequencer but just lately I’ve moved in with my girlfriend so I’m unable to produce for the sake of the neighbours, but lately I’ve met up with a bloke called Dave Steward who has a studio in his converted barn home in the middle of nowhere, running music through mixing desks and all the gadgets. There’s a lot of inspiration going into my work now being in the sticks riding on quad bikes and jumping in the outdoor hot tub with a few beers!
You have had releases through Riot! Records. How did you come into contact with Ed Real and how did you go about getting your tracks signed onto his label?
I’ve known Ed for around three years now and met up a few times so he’s helped me get some hooky stuff together for which I have a lot of respect for him. He’s really busy with trackitdown.net now so he’s got me running things this end with me and Dave Steward’s new party label FWD>> which I’m hoping is going to kick off so keep an eye out!
You also worked briefly with Alphamagic, when they were established, and had releases through their 2CB techno imprint. How did you come into contact with Alphamagic?
I managed to get their A&R manager Lee Stacey’s address so sent him my first tune ‘Colloseum’ and he liked it so from that release I've had a few others on there which is mainly crossover material under the name Tik Tok.
You have collaborated with some big names in the past including DJ GRH, Daley and Will Gold. With your connections at Riot!, are there any plans to work with the likes of BK & Nick Sentience in the future?
I used to go Storm a lot when Nick Lunn was the promoter and good old Daley used to test drive all my tracks which made me get my sound progress — they were the good days! Will Gold’s a really good friend of mine and do a lot of work for him over in Nottingham which is mainly the ravey side. Gary GRH is cool — I did some tracks with him as he’s pushing my sound around every border. I would like to do a collaboration with Ben (BK) as I’m a fan of his futuristic techy sound.
Onto DJ'ing briefly. You’ve performed live sets at Storm and are good friends with Nick Lunn. Do you have any more of these planned for the future?
As Nick has left storm it’s harder for me to get gigs, as it’s mainly Tidy Trax nights now. The night called Religion has also left the Emporium which I were resident at so it’s getting a bit hard for gigs at the minute... I definitely have plans for live sets in the future when me and the Religion boys set up the new night.
You also are beginning to establish yourself as a DJ on the Northern scene, as well as developing a reputation on the London techno circuit. In your eyes, what would be your ideal gig?
Playing dirty music to a club full of sexy older women — haha — naa but yarr. I really want to play abroad. I’ve been abroad once in my life and it’s pissing me off. I haven’t played London yet but would love to see what they think of my sound. London’s a weird place for me as its totally different to the shitty little town I live in — the people are really cool there. Chris Liberator’s definitely someone I look up to. He’s the nicest bloke in the world and definitely inspires me a lot — someone who’s been in the scene 15 years deserves lots of respect.
What’s the gossip on your future productions?
Look out for me and Dave Steward’s new label FWD Records featuring some party techno sounds. We’ll be releasing around three a month featuring our new Spanish boy Adultario Divino and 27 year old Tom Eyre for more of the pure stuff, be sure to logon to trackitdown.net to catch these!
Finally, you have a great reputation already amongst those that you know as someone who is re-defining the word ‘party animal’! Do you think you could ever take on Ed Real’s crown as the king of party animals?
Well when the ape gets old n decrepid we’ll see what happens, when I’ve seen him playing his night at Riot! He was like a crab on pro-plus and poppers. Definitely something I need to focus on. If you want to see this clown in action go there! You’ll be surprised... I’ve got a few more years n beers left yet to even things out.
