Chris Hoff? Who is he? Find out before he graces the decks at tidy’s New Year Weekender!

Chris Hoff is a young whipper snapper that’s been shooting through the ranks of producers quicker than Hemel Hempstead has been covered in thick black smog. His material has been released on tidy, he’s launched his own label called Mud and he’s been tipped for better and bigger things by the likes of Tara Reynolds, Lee Haslam and Ed Real.
So Chris, tell us your age, where you live and which side your bread is buttered?
Howdy. I'm 20, based in Lincoln and I prefer the mouldy side buttered.
How did you end up getting into producing, were you just work shy and wanted to do something you can do in your pyjamas?
Me and normal jobs do not mix at all. I’m pretty useless to be honest. From the age of 14 I've been through every kind of job from paper boy to vegetable packer to cycle mechanic to pizza delivery boy. All of which I was pants at from spending most of the time in a daydream.
I left school to do a DJ and music technology course at college, which although I managed to fail, helped me big time. I got to grips with the technical side of producing and taught myself the musical aspect. I pretty much fell in love with it from the first track I made and when a tune is going right I get a much bigger buzz than anything else so it’s defiantly a drug I’m addicted too and I’m going to do the best I can to put myself in a position where I can do this for as long as I want.
From the productions you’ve sent me you’re extremely diverse, I’ve heard hard house, techy house, breaks, in fact the list goes on and on. What genre do you prefer to produce?
Erm... I pretty much enjoy doing it all. Some more than others mind, I do sometimes have to make a certain style of track just to get a bit of fast cash admittedly. I find that I haven’t really got a fav style to produce but to get the best results I have to keep mixing it about to keep my ideas flowing. There are a lot of producers who only seem to make one style but still come up with original ideas most of the time. I am not one of them.... I want to be in the position where I feel I can turn my hand to everything, because this will help me in the future. I can see myself making commercial music in a few years time as it’s my next big goal as an artist to have a track in the top 40. A long while off yet, I have a lot to learn still but I will get there eventually, just as having my own release on tidy was a few years ago when I started.
We've got real belief in you at tidy hence your showcase booking at the New Year Weekender, how much new material have you laid down for this? What can people expect from it?
I’ve got about a year’s worth of material already made which I can choose from on the night however part of the fun for me is making fresh tunes in preparation. It’s part of the excitement. I’m on fairly early so it gives me a chance to play some fun funky bootlegs I’ve made to hopefully get people shaking their tail feathers too so make sure your there.
Now you’ve started DJ’ing out do you see this as being the avenue you are going to pursue or will you keep production as your main occupation?
I will defiantly be pursuing the djing because I see it as an extension of what I do in the studio. I want to be working hard all week producing and then showcasing my work at the weekends for my gigs. Ever since I started out I’ve had the phrase “you need to be doing something different to stand out” rattling around my head, and the way I think I can do that is by doing these showcase sets. Amongst my productions people will have heard already, I’m working on originals and catchy remixes that you can only hear if I’m behind the decks!.. A kind of ‘you have to book me to hear me’ thing.
I will also be working a lot with a producer called Digital Kid who is just starting to cause some ripples in the scene with his work, as well as original tracks we are also getting bookings for B2B VS showcase sets, Storm’s birthday on March 18th being amongst others! Our b2b sets entail of my productions vs his! I don’t think there's anyone else doing that in the scene at the moment so hopefully it should work to our advantage.
As we said above, you are keeping your production wide open, will you be Djing all these genres too or are you keeping it strictly hard dance?
No, if anything it's the opposite. I want to head off more in the slower side of things, I haven’t got the same love for hard thrap as I used too, I think my taste in music has matured a bit and I can appreciate a much more slower, chunkier groove. I love the Swedish dirty electro style and it’s starting to show in my productions so hopefully the DJ’ing will follow along. However I’m no where near ready to finish in hard dance, I love making groovy techno bootlegs and the odd bit of hard house, so I will be there along with others trying to cling on to what’s left of the scene.
Who have been your inspirations?
Tidy as a whole have been a huge inspiration to me and in the earlier days having a release on the label was just a far fetched daydream. People like Maddox, Guyver, Ingo and Colin were all at a level I wanted to achieve in the future and still do! I don’t think they realise how much influence they've had on new producers.
2005 has been a massive year for you, what do you want to achieve in 2006?
Last year I decided I wanted to concentrate on the production to build my name up and 2006 I would push the djing side of things. Pestering is my strong point so promoters just give in now and get me on.
What have you learnt over the last 12 months?
Vodka mixes well with anything you want it too and I’m an annoying, but sometimes funny, drunk.
What resolutions are you making this year?
I don’t really believe in making resolutions, mainly because I wouldn’t be able to stick to them!
