Where are Knowwhere really going? Interview with Stevie

Reported by HarderFaster / Submitted 29-01-06 23:38

At first glance the history of Knowwhere reads like a real clubland success story. From a regular house party at promoter Pablo's, to, like many great things in today's dance scene, kicking off at The 414, Knowwhere then went on to The Soundshaft, The Fridge and finally to one of the last bastions of the so-called superclub, Heaven.

Each of the venue moves came with its own set of challenges, with the final shift from The Fridge to Heaven possibly being the toughest of all. Filling Heaven on a Friday night can be a daunting prospect, and the new hard dance room threatened to alienate long-term members who associated the early Knowwhere sound with euphoric, uplifting trance.

But just when the numbers were starting to rise again — and with lineups featuring the likes of Alphazone, The Tidy Boys, Matt Darey, John Kelly, Ed Real, Billy ‘Daniel’ Bunter, The *Ting* and Lisa Pin Up alongside residents Anthony Dean and Adam White, it really only was a matter of time — the guys have decided to pull the pin on their monthly parties. Refusing to believe this really was the end of one of our favourite nights, HarderFaster had a chat with Knowwhere promoter Stevie to find if they’re really going, well, nowhere…

It’s funny how things come around in life. The first review I ever tried to write for HarderFaster was for a friend of a friend’s trance night who’d managed to pull a last minute booking at Heaven after a cancellation. Cunningly the guys sent around eflyers to all their friends guaranteeing £1 entry, which is how I ended up at the first ever Knowwhere at Heaven at some stage in 2002.

I had such a good night that I somehow managed to write a couple of paragraphs about what a fantastic time I had, describing djs Ian Betts (who I’d seen play for the first time a few weeks earlier at a friend’s warehouse party in Brixton) and Nick Sentience and Phil Reynolds back to back without mentioning a single track. Funnily enough the final ‘review’ was only a couple of paragraphs long, but HarderFather Tom was still positive and said he’d run it if we could get some photos. However, no photos could be found, the review never went up and my then boyfriend and I started saving for a digital camera.

Many reviews and photo sets later, all I can say is that Knowwhere has a lot to answer for! And thank god no one came through with any photos as I found the review when moving flats a couple of years ago and it really was dire, espcially bearing in mind I was still very new to London’s club scene at that point and all that it has to offer…

But back to the subject at hand: Knowwhere. Like many Knowwhere regulars I’ve watched it grow over the last four years, and while I was initially disappointed by the move to Heaven, could see it had massive potential. So I really couldn’t believe it when I heard the news that monthly Knowwheres were going to be no more…. It was time to find out what was really going on from promoter Stevie.

As I’ve only been in the country for just over four years, it seems to me that KW has been around the club scene forever with you as one of the main faces. When did you first get into clubbing? And what made you decide to start running your own promotion?

I was actually a bit of a late starter, only getting into clubbing just over six years ago! It’s great though, all the youngsters think you’re a proper old hand from back in the day etc, so I get to pretend to know what I’m talking about. I fell into promotion by default really, when a friend of mine asked me to help out with a new party he was setting up (Ground Zero for anyone who remembers it), so I kind of learnt as we went along. Before I knew what was happening I was taking full advantage of the perks of the job, i.e. free entry!

Over the last four years KW has built up a very loyal following of dedicated clubbers, which is surely not just a sign of a very successful promotion but also no doubt testament to shed loads of hard work and flyering at 5.30am in the snow aplenty… For you, Anthony and Pablo to continue to run a regular monthly party over what have often been very tough times for the dance music industry, there must be more to it than just wanting to make a quick buck? What’s it all about for you as promoters? And what’s made you change tack recently and give up on running one of the few successful monthly trance nights in London?

It’s honestly never been about making money. There have been some months when we’ve done ok financially, but that’s always been a by-product. All three of us always felt that a ‘perfect’ party that just broke even was always better than a profitable but less enjoyable night. Flyering was always a laugh to be honest, we’d usually been in the venue all night anyway, and it was great to have a banter with the other promoters and the clubbers on the way out. There’s a bit less of that side these days. The one big reason we all do this is simply because we love clubbing and partying, there is no better feeling than the feedback we get on the night in my opinion, it makes every second worth while.

In all your years running KW, what night sticks out as the best party? The worst?

For me, the WeAre4 in October tops it so far, everything just came together. We’d had the free CD for the night done a few weeks before by Pathfinder, and to me it represented exactly what I wanted to put across. It was my personal ultimate trance CD, and in my mind expressed exactly the feeling I wanted from a night, and then on the night, it all came together and fulfilled all the expectations the CD had put in my mind — an awesome night! The worst, personally, was the night of our Fridge debut some time back. The party itself was fine, in fact for a lot of people I’ve spoken to since it was their best ever, but for myself and the guys it was an incredibly stressful night, and I never really felt I’d had the chance to enjoy any of the evening at all.

How do you feel KW has evolved over the years? What changes have you had to make to keep up with the changing club scene? Do you think you’ve evolved enough to keep up with the changes in the industry or are you going to focus on keeping KW the same to appeal to your niche market?

We’ve evolved obviously in certain ways, sizewise being the most obvious, but each move and growth spurt gave us a chance to expand into other genres we liked personally. I have to say the core has always remained about the very best trance for a very simple reason, it’s what WE like to hear. I could never run a club night based on a genre that I didn’t like, so that part will never change while I’m around. I don’t want to sound arrogant about it, but we never set out to ‘keep up’ with the scene, and never will. We play what we like to hear, and fortunately enough people agree to keep us going. Obviously trance isn’t everyone’s cup of tea… yet, but they will all understand… eventually.

How do you plan to appeal to a future generation of clubbers? And how are you going to stay fresh and vibrant for clubbers who have been doing this for the best part of a decade or even longer?

We sell ourselves to new people on two main points, the very best music, and a guarantee of a friendly atmosphere. The crowd that already come are the best advert for us, the smiling faces. Knowwhere is all about having fun, not looking cool, or taking it all too seriously, but having fun. Clubbing’s easy, if you’re not smiling, you’re not doing it right.

A number of what were once regular London trance nights have ceased to be as frequent recently, or stopped altogether. Do you think trance has had its day in London?

Not while there is still breath left in my body.

The crowd at any given KW are renowned for being one of the friendliest and up for it around and while the dance music industry contains more than its fair share of sharks, you must have met some real gems over the years too. Could you tell us a bit about some of the people you’ve got to know over the years and how they’ve made KW what it is today?

As I said before, they are the real reason it still goes on. There are people at any given Knowwhere that I would trust with my life, that’s no exaggeration, the constant goodwill of the many helpers, regulars and friends that go towards making it what it is never ceases to amaze me. The feedback from newcomers is always great, particularly at the end when we like to shake hands with as many of them as possible, they tend to look at us like we’re a little weird the first couple of times, like some kind of happy clappy church group or something, but we really believe what goes around comes around. Make people feel welcome and they come back. Feel the love… ahem.

For many Knowwhere regulars the Fridge was KW’s spiritual home, but people are finally getting used to the move to Heaven. How do you feel Heaven has worked out as a venue for you? The bouncers at Heaven are known for being some of the strictest in London, do you think this has put some of your regular KW crew off? Would you ever go back to the Fridge?

The move was received incredibly positively. I think it’s far and away the most suitable venue for us in London. A lot of the stuff spoken about Heaven security is frankly rubbish. That may sound harsh, but let’s be honest about it, that sort of attitude to any given security team often revolves around someone’s being pulled up for doing something they know is illegal anyway. The team at Heaven are professionals, who also happen to work in pretty much London’s most ‘targeted’ area when it comes to police awareness. My opinion is biased perhaps, but I think they’re the best in the business. We left the Fridge on good terms, and there’s always the golden rule of ‘never say never’, but Heaven is the right venue for us right now.

Running a monthly party for four years must’ve taken its toll on your other careers and personal lives. Do you feel you’ve had to make many sacrifices to make KW what it is today? Are there loads of ‘normal’ non-clubbing things you hope to do in March?

It’s been different for all of us. Personally I’m not a ‘career’ person, I do what needs to be done to pay the bills, the rest of my time on the planet is to have fun. It can get a bit tough for the ‘Knowwhere widows’ sometimes: Naomi has kept me sane on more than one occasion and I know Pablo’s Naomi and Anthony’s Tracey have done the same for them. On behalf of the three of us, I’d like to say, Naomi, Tracey & Naomi, we love you all, and Thank You.

In March we start planning for a big trip to Amsterdam for Queensday at the end of April, organised by Pathfinder & Nordstar. We’re bringing trance to a Dutch street party!!

Clubbing as we know it had undergone many changes in the last couple of years. On the one hand smaller nights are taking a dive left right and centre and bigger events are becoming fewer and far between, but on the other there seem to be more and more new djs and young promotions than ever before. Do you think the scene has reached some kind of saturation point? Where do you see clubbing heading and where would you like to see it head?

It’s getting smaller and mainstream music seems to be having a bit of a guitar band based resurgence, meaning it’s better than a lot of the dross that’s been about for a while, so less younger people feel the need to look at the underground scene. It’s a point some people will disagree with, but it’s my opinion.

Where is it heading? It will die one day, or at least as we’ve known it. It’s naive to think otherwise. I think the DJs will become less important as the technology changes. Clubbing (in the sense of people going to a club to hear recorded rather than live music) has been around for nearly half a century. It will go on, but the music will change. Being detached from the mainstream means our scene will last longer, but become much, much smaller. In twenty five years a dozen of us will be gathering round a hologram of PVD in a pub back room in Isleworth and calling it the great trance revival…

The traditional KW sound is associated with euphoric, uplifting hands in the air trance. Who are your favourite trance djs and producers? What up and comings interest you at the moment?

OK, a tough one, because it always looks like I’m bigging up my own little ‘crew’ here, but the bottom line is, I could listen to Anthony Dean, Adam White and Pathfinder all day and all night without getting bored. We play them, (and all the others) at Knowwhere because we love what they play, it really is that simple. Up and comings? I hear Tiesto and PVD are ok.

Do you live and breath trance only, or are you into other kinds of music too?

OK, I have to come clean, yes I do like other kinds of music. I’m a big Northern Soul fan from my days parading up and down Brighton beach as a Mod, you know, Lambrettas, two-tone suits etc. I listen to classical music (trance’s big brother in my humble opinion), and have the most stupidly eclectic CD collection on the planet. At the moment I’d say my two top non-dance tunes were ‘Shaft’ — Isaac Hayes & ‘Northern Sky’ — Nick Drake, and if I was to ever do karaoke, (which I won’t) I’d do The Righteous Brothers, ‘You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling’.

After working so hard for so long there must be a number of people in the industry who’ve gained your respect. Who has inspired you over the years and who has kept that respect?

Honestly? I have to say Pablo. His integrity, his honesty, and the way he treats others in the industry should be an inspiration to anyone new in the business. He’s the Gaffer.

What aspects of the industry do you like the most? And dislike?

I love the people I get to meet, people who like to be different. I love getting into clubs for free, come on, admit it, it’s why we all do it! I love the feeling of belonging to something ‘underground’ and unusual.

I detest pretentiousness, up themselves DJs who think promoters owe them a living, and don’t try to please a crowd, promoters who go for the lowest common denominator and don’t even enjoy the music at their own party, and most of all, drunken or bolloxed predatory males who assume that women enjoy them dribbling over them all night. The first two are rare, (though they are still out there). The final category is all too common sadly, and something for which I’ve always had a “Zero Tolerance” policy. If you don’t already know it, if you get that from anyone at Knowwhere, come and find myself or Pablo and it will be dealt with.

Clubbing means different things to different people, but at KW you guys have always tried to keep things special, not just with your original lineups and production but even down to your trademark shirts. Is it hard to find that special shirt before a KW party or do you have a wardrobe-full at home waiting to be unleashed? How many shirts do you own? Do you have a favourite?

It’s actually all about the shirts really. I only do the parties to show off the shirts. OK, I just counted, there are 33 “Stevie Shirts” in the wardrobe at the moment! Favourites come and go, Naomi has recently started making ‘one of a kind’ shirts for me, and there will be her latest creation (complete with a matching dress for her!) for you all to see at the party. Mum always said, if you don’t have a personality, wear a loud shirt.

You must have learned loads over the last few years and received your fair share of good advice. What advice would you pass on to aspiring club promoters reading this?

Always listen to advice politely and with a smile, then ignore it. You’ll do what you want to anyway, but there’s no need to hurt anyone’s feelings is there?

Finally, do you have any plans for future parties you can share with the HF massive? Or will we have to keep our ears to the ground?

You will have to keep your ears to the ground, we had ‘planned’ to literally not ‘plan’ anything until after this coming party, but the sneaky tip is, we’ve already broken that little rule and started work…. We just can’t leave it alone…

More: The Times They Are A Changing…
Sadly after 4 years, the time has come for Knowwhere to bring to an end it’s monthly party. As many of you are aware, the clubbing scene has seen some changes over the years, and simply put, we have found like a number of other promotions out there, that a monthly party is no longer sustainable for us. We’ve thought long and hard before making this decision, and it is not one we take lightly, as we know there will be many of you out there very sad to hear this news. We’d like to assure you this is not the end of Knowwhere, our intention will be to move to a more sustainable and flexible format, putting on a handful of ‘special occasion’ parties each year, and you can be assured there will be as much effort put into them as there always have been to the monthly parties. February’s Knowwhere will be our final monthly party, and we’d like it to be a spectacular farewell to the four year run. Knowwhere has always been about you, the crowd, and we’d like to ask you one more big favour for the final farewell, we’d like everyone to come along and make it the most awesome Knowwhere ever! We think it deserves to go with a massive BANG! So it’s time for all the old hands to come out of the woodwork, complete with your very best smiles, and make it the best Knowwhere ever.

The February line up continues the quality you’ve come to expect from us down at HEAVEN. In the Trance room, we welcome along the legendary Scott Bond. Billy’s appearance for us back in October was so good that we just had to get him back, and we are very proud to be welcoming him to the Knowwhere closing party!
Joining Billy, we welcome Phil Reynolds to his first appearance for Knowwhere. Another of Hard Dance’s favourite names, Spencer Freeland is also making his Knowwhere debut on the night. Riot favourite Ed Real returns to the Hard Dance room, alongside one of London’s favourites, Olly Perris! Finally for the Hard Dance room we are joined by one of southern England’s finest, Spikes.

For the fans of Funky, this time around our residents Funk-a-Tronic are joined by Funky Little Ant, as a certain Knowwhere resident performs his third set of the night under his funky guise. Finally the boys are joined by Little Miss Nads.

Was an amazing interview, with the Knowwhere message really coming through in what Stevie says. It really is all about the music and having fun, not all clubs give out this vibe it's fair to say.

I've had most of my best clubbing moments at Knowwhere. By the sounds of it there will be more. Maybe a bit less regular, but most probably even more special.

What you will find in Steve now is a rare thing...a genuinely decent person whom has also been at the forefront of a promotion: Steve I can only say thank you-and all the best! Don’t ever let go of that musical passion within you because people depend on it! Big grin

Huge thanks to Stevie, Pablo and Anthony for what I believe is the best Trance night in the country if not the world. For pure friendliness, lack of attitude, inclusion and acceptance of anyone who wants to party, Knowwhere is unbeatable. Thank you guys for giving us some of the best times of our lives. Richard and Linda xx
