On Saturday April 15th bank holiday weekend Live In Music (www.liveinmusic.com) presents Take Out starring two legendary London partyhead jockeys, Tom Real and Steeeee’eeeee’eeeeelo! I thought I’d do a quick interview to see what these guys where up to. But I couldn’t be bothered, so I just got them to do it themselves… let’s see what happens! JC...
Tom Real interviews Steelo...
Oi Steelo, legend has it you cane it harder than Marc Spoon (RIP). What's the most random situation you’ve found yourself in recently?
Hahaha, well I ended up getting the tube the wrong way to Vauxhall and not realising until I was in Walthamstow. Can’t remember anything after that, have been told various stories though about putting my fingers in people’s ears an falling up stairs and shit…
(JC would also like to point out the time in Barcelona when Steelo fell asleep under a sofa in a gay bar and we found him 3 hours later, and the time you had an afterparty in the road and nearly got arrested, oh and that incident at London Zoo...... etc.)
You’ve taken breaks from the breaks clubs into the hard dance arena, how do the two crowds compare?
The only major difference is you’ll never see a glow stick or cyber at a breaks rave lol. They’re well similar in the sense that both crowds are always well up for it, and well friendly too. Definitely for the win.
Old skool or nu skool? Discuss...
What are you, some kind of c*nt? What's there to discuss?! Love both but it’s gotta be the old skool. Proper bad all day business, strictly.
When’s the last time you had a quiet weekend and what did you do?
1995, can’t remember what I did, far too long ago. Probably got pissed, bunned a zoot and had a wank.
Finally, when are you going to get your arse into the studio and write some beats?
Good question. Hopefully next time I get a quiet weekend!
Steelo does Tom (ohhhhhhhhhhhh)
Ez now Tom, are you real?
Morning S’lo, I’d like to point out I’m a real as real can be.... For example, when I walk into a wall, it hurts.
Really?
Fo’ sho. If you don’t believe me come over here and touch me.
Later big boy… now, I know you love your psy trance madcore business, have you thought about making any psy breaks type stuff?
I think getting into psy trance (the music and the parties) has been the single biggest influence on my life in the last 5 years. It was like in the old days when drum n bass and jungle came out of hardcore. The vibes there were intense... I’m feeling that in psy and to be completely honest, they throw the best parties.
Re. psy breaks, I’m on that mo’ fo. Me and Nick Sentience have been in the studio turning out some full on, yet slightly trippy breaks.... Keep em peeled.
Alongside the houselectrobreaks I also produce a monthly psy radio show called New Wave Radio on Ministry Radio. We had Liquid Records down in March and they brought one of their new artists, Mood Deluxe, he’s an ex drum n bass head turned onto the psy sound and his new album features the bad ‘ass psy breaks I’ve heard yet.... Seriously sick & well worth checking Mr Lowe!
In the mix. What’s coming up in the wonderful world of Thomas Jenkins Real in the near future then?
This year I’ve made a concious descision to cut back on playing loads of gigs and just focus on the good parties and the ones I want to play, like Takeout! Last year I burnt myself out playing average gigs and it’s just not any fun!
This year is also about focusing on studio work with a view to 2007 being a very big year for the real. Also May 12th sees the return of the excellent At Night parties that I run with the Cheshire Catz and Sedition DJs crew. Following two years of totally rocking warehouse parties we’re taking the concept into a club environment and May 12th is the date, so watch out for that.
Oh, all those lucky enough to be coming to The Glade Festival you can catch me back 2 back with the Rogue Element in the Breaksday tent on the Friday.... Rispek!
What’s the best thing about being Thomas Jenkins Real?
Being my own boss. At the moment I run my own music and events PR company by day which allows me to focus on what I love 24/7.... It’s an exciting field to be in and great to be able to work with music.
Your bird still has my copy of 'Smack my Bitch Up' - can I have it back please?
Nope, I’ve well taxed it mate. It’s been in my house near on a year and as such I claim squatters rights to it.... lol!
C*nt, I wont forget about this! *waves fist*
