Fiasco welcomes Deporpatas @ the River Bar & interview with Nacho

I went to a very exciting launch party last Saturday night at the River Bar, Tower Bridge. It was a combination of two celebrations. Firstly, the fantastic club-night known as Fiasco was celebrating its 1st birthday party on the 1st of April and secondly, it was the launch of a new record label called Deporpatas. I came along with my hubby to support Nacho, a very talented young Spanish DJ/producer/music engineer, who is so passionate about his music he launched his own record label.
He is also co-promoter of Fiasco along with his good mate, DJ Chay. This has become a fantastic funky house monthly club-night with its residency at the River Bar.
Most of you know Nacho from the club night known to us all as Spiritualised. Nacho and Clodagh started Spiritualised in their bedroom all those years ago. He was so into his music he went off to university and got himself a degree in music. He loves what he does. He has got a beautiful energy, especially when behind the decks.
The River Bar is a great little venue. It looks like a regular bar to a non-clubber but there is a whole other world downstairs. It is a haven for clubbers who want to kick back and have a good time. It has a lovely vibe to it. It’s small with a few cosy spots to sit down, but at this party, no one was sitting down.
I knew the night would be fantastic when I walked into a heaving dance floor packed with bodies just wanting to dance. The music was awesome. What a great line up, from Luke Smith, Nacho, Clodagh, DJ Lewis, Jacque and Kane. It was a stomping, jam-packed night filled with fantastic music, and of course great djs.
I loved that every DJ has a unique style from electro-funky, tribal-house to funky-house. Behind the decks hung a huge screen showing very cool images from a huge slick monitor.
We missed the first 2 djs, Jacque and Kane (Entice) but heard they hit the spot and got everyone warmed up! I arrived just as Luke Smith (Spiritualised) was heating up. I haven’t heard him play for about 2 years and I’ve always said his music rocks. I noticed his style is sexier, more fun; it was absolutely rockin’. I seriously boogied to his set, which was cheeky, funky, and hard not to dance to. His last few tunes rocked the house, ‘Turn on the Music’ by Roger Sanchez and my fave of the night the theme tune to ‘Ghostbusters’ remixed by Axwell. I didn’t leave the dance floor.
DJ Lewi (unknown FM 90.2)was up next. I liked this guy’s style. I would describe his sound as very London funky with a Mediterranean mix thrown in. He played some great tunes but two that I know of were the Praise Cats — ‘Shined On Me’ (Repero & Menace mix) and Haji & Emanuel — ‘Take Me Away’. I hope we hear more on this guy!
Although Clodagh is one of London’s top DJ’s, she still made it down to support her very good friend, Nacho. She played with such enthusiasm and energy, with some great tunes thrown into the mix, ‘False Light’ by Marco V (Thunderdub Mix 001) and ‘Guttersnipe’ — Chris Lake mix (Mtr1003). She brings her drive and energy and sheer loveliness to a party. She was also pro photographer of the night to support Nacho. She’s currently djing in Brazil. I’m sure we’ll hear all the news and see the pictures when she gets back…
Star of the night up next was — Nacho. With his cheeky smile and friendly attitude this boy knows what the crowd want! We were blown away by his set. It was his night and he did us proud. I would describe his set as hard driving beats with a Latin twist; the dance floor was seriously pumping.
He brought his Mediterranean influence into his set with a bit of electro thrown in for good measure and not forgetting the fabulous vocal house. I was slightly upset that I couldn’t hear his brand new tracks, but he’s releasing them on 17th April at the Spiritualised party. There was also another reason to celebrate the night away, it was Nacho’s birthday. I think it was a pretty amazing birthday!
It’s about time, to get down and ask the man himself some questions about his new label, Deporpatas…
Hey Nacho. Congratulations on your label, and your new productions. We all want to know, what does ‘Deporpatas’ mean as my husband thought it translated into ‘potatoes’!?
Hiya Colette! The word ‘Deporpatas’ is a combination of two Spanish words. However, if you try to find it by itself in the dictionary you would not find it. But it is a friendly way of saying, doing things really fast and on the last minute. Hmm I think it fits me really well!
Who came up with the concept for your label?
Deporpatas has been around for nearly nine years now. It is actually my email address. My good friend, Cesar, found it when we were both about to open our first email account, and of course by that time we were also immersed in the clubbing world, dancing to the rhythms of Pendragon, and wicked hard uplifting trance promotions. This might be the reason for my pseudonym, looking for something cheeky and unusual.
Since then I’ve been trying to connect the music I make and play with the real meaning of the label! Pure uplifting energy, no attitude, cheeky and fun with a pinch of soul!
You’re a busy boy as well as your djing, producing and setting up your label, you’ve also recently finished studying?
Yes, I’ve got a Diploma in Sound Engineering and a BA in Music & Arts Management. At the moment I’m working on an Electronic Music Production course and hopefully soon will be enrolling for a MA in Sonic Art. Buff! I always like to keep myself busy! I want to get as far as I can!
Tell us about Fiasco?
Fiasco is a great fun packed party. It started on 1st of April 2005. We hired a venue called the River Bar, just next to the impressive Tower Bridge! The atmosphere that night was very electric; it reminded me of the very special moments at Spiritualised. The management offered us a monthly residency and the rest is history.
Everyone that has been either at Spiritualised or Fiasco have at least one good memory to remember for life! Amazing! Chay is the main promoter. He does all the hard work! I help him to make the event come together. I try to simply have fun at the party! It can become stressful sometimes, but when we see the crowd with a big smile on their faces, we forget all about it.
There is also a big team behind the scenes and of course the Spiritualised & Edmonton Crew. Without them, Fiasco wouldn’t be where is is now! I like to think Fiasco is Spiritualised’s little sister! But this little one has grown big and quick! Watch this space for a big surprise coming soon!
When is the launch of the new tracks you’ve produced?
Deporpatas Records will be presenting its first two productions at Spiritualised this 17th April. The A side is called ‘R U Spiritualised?’ This track is a pure uplifting stomper! It’s hard trance taken to the limit, its melody lines and acid lines will definitely take you to a different mind level!
For those who prefer it a bit harder the B side, ‘We R Here Now’ is a driving tech trance with loads of percussion acid lines and Indian choirs.
Keep smiling and see you on the dance floor!
Thanks to Nacho. Check out his new label at www.deporpatas.com
