Relocation relocation with Twisted's very own Hannah Willis

Hannah Willis has been at the reins of Twisted for a whole year. During this time she has tried and tested new ideas, run a hugely successful New Year’s Eve Twisted, and is currently going through what must be one of the biggest head aches of her life — a last minute venue change! And that funnily enough falls on the anniversary of Hannah’s appointment as promoter of Twisted — how apt!
With so many rumours afoot about what is going on down at the Fridge, we corner Hannah to talk about Twisted and what it means for the future of one of London’s favourite long running club nights.
Welcome back Hannah. It’s been a year since you last appeared on Harderfaster, how’s it been going?
Very well thank you. I have had a very busy year with Twisted and tidy management. No rest for the wicked!
Hannah with the Mauro Picotto team (Hannah’s the tall one in the middle)
I suppose from a Twisted point of view, this last minute drama is your anniversary present as it will be a year to the day that you threw your very own first Twisted. How does that feel?
Well ‘stressful’ would be a word high on the list, but I suppose a good bit of drama keeps everything interesting. Most girls ask for diamonds for anniversaries whereas all I’m after is a venue!
The last 12 months have been a fantastic learning experience and this is just another challenge that I’m looking forward to overcoming. The crowd that come along to the Twisted parties have always been open-minded musically and up for a bit of experimentation so we’re pretty sure that same spirit will prevail this coming weekend.
Room 2
So then, tell us what happened? You’re obviously privvie to some inside info, what’s the crack?
Well the Fridge has been closed due to adverse circumstances. The managers thought they would be up and running for Twisted, but as with most things in this industry, things never go 100% to plan. The venue owners have decided to take this opportunity whilst they are closed to make some much needed improvements to the venue. As for what they are, you’ll have to keep your eyes peeled over the coming weeks to find out!
There can’t be that many venues that are available on a Saturday night in London? How much of a task was it to find a suitably sized venue and get things sorted in time?
The key thing in this sort of situation is not to panic. There is always a solution to every problem, even though it may not be evident at first. We have quite a large support network within Most Wanted and good relationships with many different venues.
Basically we put the feelers out to see what was available and fortunately for us, the party and the Twisted crowd, Sarah from the Renaissance Rooms came back to us and offered to host the party at what is now a fantastic venue since the owners of Heaven took it over.
Hannah
Most Wanted Events are no strangers to last minute dramas involving venue changes. I recall one example when they had little less than 24 hours to move home, so I suppose you are in good hands with the rest of the team?
It was only a few weeks ago when we had to move I Love VC from the Fridge to Fire Club with not much more than a day’s notice and that all seemed to go pretty smoothly in the end. We already had a plan B in place for this event just in case with new e-flyers and press releases ready to go if we got the call and our teams ready to hit the forums to let people know.
What you do find at moments like these is that a lot of people in the scene are more than happy to help out as they can appreciate and understand your situation. Losing a venue last minute is most promoter’s biggest nightmare and if it wasn’t for certain people doing everything that they could to help us this would be a lot more difficult. Everybody has really pulled together to try and spread the word and the effort has been fantastic. I would like to buy them all a drink, but that would be my year’s salary gone!
The Renaissance Rooms has been recently refurbished and is a relative newcomer to the hard dance fold — what’s it like, and for those who haven’t been before — what can we expect?
It really is a fantastic venue now. They have installed a whole new intelligent lighting rig, an awesome Funktion 1 sound system, new flooring, large screens and great bar areas. When you walk in you can feel that it’s going to be a great space for partying in. There’s plenty of space for dancing and loads of comfy areas to rest your weary feet. We’ll also be bringing in some of our own extra lighting and Twisted Production especially for this event.
Main room
Now then, to the night itself — Twisted Addicts! The flyer as ever is whacky, and in some eyes a tad controversial? Have you had any backlash, emails regarding the infamous image?
In light of recent events at the Fridge I think it’s fair to say there have been a few raised eyebrows regarding the flyer, but the vast majority of people have taken it in good jest. Over the years Twisted has courted controversy on more than a few occasions with some of our flyer designs but we have always aimed to have a very tongue in cheek feel to the way they look. Nobody has complained about it but it certainly has got people talking.
The VIP Room
So what have you got in store for everyone on the night?
The usual Twisted craziness along with fantastic music, dancers UV/balloon stalls and all those little addictions that you can’t get enough of. Twisted has always had a real feel-good, party vibe to it and we’re certain that this will be no different at the Renaissance Rooms this weekend.
What’s next for Twisted? If the Fridge doesn’t re-open, you’re faced with a problem of finding a permanent new home for Twisted? Are you thinking ahead that far, and if all goes well this weekend, could the Renaissance Rooms be in the running?
Well, from what we have just been told by the Management of the Fridge who we have been in contact with regularly, the venue will be re-opening again very soon. Twisted has been at the Fridge over 2 years now and it would have been a real shame if the venue had to close for any reason as we have had some truly amazing parties there. Fortunately, that’s not going to be the case and we will be back home again on the 3rd of June in the new and improved Fridge — Twisted Style!

Thanks for your time Hannah. And for anyone reading this interview, please help this lady out and spread the word about this weekend.
