House without prejudice — Audio has arrived

Reported by benz / Submitted 16-06-06 21:48

I for one get bloody sick of the musical prejudice and segregation that all too often consumes London’s clubs: narrow-minded musical policies that allow little in the way of progression or variety as the night goes on, and snobbish attitudes towards different genres. OK, so not everyone is ‘blessed’ with such a wide-ranging taste in music, but for those of us who are — there’s not much choice. Thank god for Audio then — a new Sunday party at The Whitehouse in Clapham which promises funky house, afro-house, Latin house, electro, minimal, breaks, and everything in between. It’s all about the groove!

Audio will run every other Sunday at The Whitehouse, further strengthening the venue's roster. You can expect to hear only the finest house, breaks and electro DJs the country (and beyond) has to offer. To find out just what Audio has to offer and why it’s set to be one of London’s more forward-thinking parties, we got the promoter Damian Conlon to sit down with us and talk things through . . .

Damian Conlon

What’s the idea behind Audio then? Why has this party come into existence?

The whole idea behind Audio was to bring together the finer crop of London’s dj talent, guys and gals that have already proved successful with their own unique sound and style and meld the differing genres. Nowadays you go to various club nights and you just hear a continuous pattern of ‘same old same old’ all night long. Variety is the spice of life as they say and Audio grew from an idea to ‘mix it up a bit’.

Back when the whole dance revolution thingy started, around ’88/’89, it was just called house music. Djs would play varying styles of quality house records, you would hear A Guy Called Gerald’s ‘Voodoo Ray’ next to Joey Beltram’s ‘Energy Flash’, Rhythm is Rhythm’s ‘Beyond the Dance’ next to Richie Rich’s ‘Salsa House’. All brilliant records that were, amongst many others, foundations of what the scene is today.

To me, and I think to most people who really love music, a good groove is a good groove, whether it be minimal, tech, soulful, afro, breaks whatever . . . the list is endless nowadays. Audio is an umbrella given to represent quality party pumping grooves in all genres. We wanted to throw a party and celebrate that fact.

Why were you chosen to help run the party? How long have you been working in the clubbing industry?

I’ve been in this game since the start really. I went to all the outdoor illegal raves back in the day (’89, ’90), painted smilies all over my bedroom walls and got hooked on the dance/club scene since then. I bought some decks and quickly moved into producing, had a few tunes out with remixes from Tiesto and such like and then some years later (2000) was given an opportunity to throw a boat party on the illustrious Silver Sturgeon. I love boats. With some slightly illegal guerrilla tactics we corked the boat, the party went off and it was all uphill from there.

Who helped you to learn the ropes? Or were you mostly self-taught? Have you made any mistakes over the years that you learnt from the hard way?

There’s always stuff to learn in this game, always a new challenge, always more ideas you can come up with. I guess I was self-taught from throwing my own parties in and around sunny south London. I often did the whole process from the start, creating the flyers and posters, doing the press releases, promoting the event morning noon and night, right up to collecting the money on the door and then djing at the event. You got to love anything your doing if you’re going to get any real joy out of it, I love people, I love to see them having a good time and I love great music.

Things that I’ve learnt the hard way . . . don’t be complacent and be careful who you trust. Life can throw you a myriad of hurdles at you and it’s always a shock when you have to deal with the unexpected. Shit happens, it always does, you got to be a bumper car, swerve ‘em or go full on and run ‘em over.

What have been your biggest successes and disasters over the years?

In terms of running your own parties, it’s like losing your cherry, or knocking back your first pill. The first one was just brilliant, everything went perfect, the boat was packed to the hilt, the atmosphere was off the scale and it was “one more, one more” at the end. People were talking about it for weeks. I will never forget it. That great summer we had back in ‘02 was another memorable year, we went on another guerrilla campaign for a new venture, posters up — posters down, posters up — posters down . . . shop keepers and business didn’t like us much . . . anyway it came to the night in question and there were people queuing even before I had arrived! The venue in question broke all records since on the bar and the party was something very very special indeed, a wicked night!

Disasters . . . there were a tumble weed or two seen drifting through an old club I used to work at, come hell or high water you just couldn’t get people in this place. It had changed ownership a few times and I went in there and set up a whole program of events. Some worked, some didn’t and in the end it was sold. It was just one of those places, you could of put Muhammed Ali in there for a 3rd tussle with George Foreman and you would have problems. I hear it’s a barber shop now and doing great business.

X-Press 2 playing at Push at The Whitehouse

Which special guests have you got lined up for the parties? What’s the criteria behind who you’ll be booking?

The criteria are simple really. Folks that are known to be able to provide the sounds and deliver the goods on the dance floor. There are some great guests in store for audio over the coming summer, not only big names but also some exclusive talent too. We’ve done our homework here at Audio and don’t want to give away too much at this stage . . . watch this space.

What kind of a crowd are you hoping to attract?

Come with a smile, ready to shake your arse a bit, and spread a bit of love around the place. People can tend to be too cool for skool sometimes or a little above themselves. Don’t take yourself or this too seriously . . . it’s a party first and foremost, life’s a party and these are some truly wicked djs that are gonna spoil you with some seriously bad ass tunes. Remember to love a little and you’ll be very very welcome at Audio.

Whitehouse girls

What’s the venue, The Whitehouse, like for those who haven’t been? What do you make of Clapham in general?

The venue is wicked . . . I always love places where you can wonder around and get up to a little bit of mischief. There’s two floors of music, both intimate party rooms and a great sound system too. It’s the perfect place as a venue, especially for Audio as it’s like dancing in your own front room with all your best mates to some of the biggest djs on the scene. Did I mention the sunny roof terrace too? Stop it . . . it really is, I was there for James Zabiela not so long back just as a punter and when I tell you the place was going off, well , it was going off. The White House is great for that. It’s an intimate space with two rooms and an outside terrace, great for parties.

Who would feature on your ideal line-up, and what extra entertainments would you lay on if money was no barrier?

Great question! So your giving me license to do what ever I liked? Well . . . fire works, start with fireworks all night long, big f*ckers too, nukes in the sky type shit, a huge stage set on top of a cliff with a rough and tumbling sea a yonder. Warm with a slight breeze and the sun setting leaving a dim reddish, dark blue sky. Now we start the fireworks. James Zabiela intros the night, with Jean Michelle Jarre doing a back to back set — it can work trust me. Then Fatboy Slim doing a breaks / party set. Prodigy headlining, always wicked live. Then a drum & bass set for an hour by one of the boys . . . Randall, Hype, Aphrodite possibly. From there into a rocking afro tribal set, I’ll do that one. Then . . . as the sun comes up . . . some Latin/African stuff, a few classics thrown in for good measure and bam! Bob’s your uncle, Fanny’s your aunt, party of the century.

Back to reality . . . King Roc, Jnr J, Raymundo Rodriguez, The Ninjas and a nice lady called Fox in an intimate party venue with a sunny roof terrace. Maybe chuck an England World Cup knock out tie with Germany on the big screens too. Now that’s a great party.

How do you plan to make Audio stand out from the myriad of other house music events in the capital?

Audio is unique and fresh in its approach, It’s a melange and celebration of what house music has always been about, people getting together and having a good time to some seriously wicked grooves, whatever genre, what ever style. There is an art of course to making this all meld together — you can’t of course go from one extreme to the other, but the difference will be in keeping it spiced up! I love break beats. The Fox is a lady I heard who is wicked at doing that. I love deep and dirty minimal grooves and I love afro and tribal rhythms. I’ll leave that up to the genius of the DJ talent that we have chosen to make it all work. They all know their stuff and understand that you the punters come first . . . at the end of the day it’s a party and as said . . . a good groove is a good groove, I believe everybody deep down understands that, whether they know it or not, there is a certain pulse, a certain something, a certain hook in any great record that makes people want to dance. The djs we will be choosing for Audio will be a representation of that. We are in a unique position to be able to bring some of the biggest names of the scene to play alongside much of London’s raw talent and I am very excited about it.

Found it a breath of fresh air to work with Damian when promoting a past event at the white house ... Was nice to see someone cover all areas and ideas when promoting and work well with the host...

Disagree about the musical prejudice and segregation comment though Benz as many more nights these days are mixing the sounds... Wink

Hope to make it down to the Whitehouse again soon to check it out. Good Stuff.
