Together @ Turnmills reviewed Reported by Winter Phoenix / Submitted 07-07-06 18:38 If I were writing a review for Time Out I might say Together @ Turnmills was an electric blue funk splashed with groovy high rolling, swinging hot fashionistas. It could easily be described as a fusion of electronic house, grimy techno, parlour room hipness and gaseous hilarity. At least that’s what the proprietors of the Laughing Gas stand were promoting, which coincidentally is where I started the night. I was out with a spy, yes, and a real spy – who for the purposes of this review will be called Mr X. As my friend doesn’t like the dizzy intoxication of anything besides chocolate (which is his one and only weakness) I was playing the tee total game but by Jove if I wasn’t I don’t think I would have moved on from our first perch! Arriving fairly early and what with Mr X having never been to Turnmills, we took a quick tour of the club. We strolled through the rooms and alcoves extending from the disco balls and bright blue stars to the gloriously decorated hallway before the end room, hosting a line up of bands put on by Stylish Riots. We came back to settle for a drink in the T5 room, where all the early birds were gathering to marvel at the sights and breath in delights of the Gas bar, hosted by Fishseeksbicyle. Of course with a name like that a girl like me is quickly enamoured, but the effort put into expressing a lust for fun was leaping from the bar and tickling the fancies of any passer by. Ladies were dressed in funky feather boas and pink polka dots and gents donned bright suit jackets and hats. The vibe was loud, uninhibited and friendly. Before long Mr X and I were watching two young women and a lucky fella playing Twister, aided with a hand from the gas barman. Hang on a minute you might be thinking, did she inhale one too many balloons or just show up to completely the wrong party? Well, if you think this is a weird start to a night just keep your eyes on the page. Yes my dear reader, there’s more in store. One cola down and we decided to see what the other rooms had to offer. In the last room the first live band Battant were pouring out their brand of electronic rock and a happy crowd gathered to watch. While not many were moved to a groove I enjoyed the output of the four on the stage and they were giving it a lot of love. Mr X wasn’t really digging the vibe though, so we trotted back to the first room beneath the stairs. For those unfamiliar with Turnmills as a venue, it’s entrance is a staircase sweeping down into the red curtained underbelly of Farringdon — if it were an organ it would surely be some type of well maintained intestine. Each room has a different feel to it, leading nicely on through clean and bright short corridors or bar areas, the main room has amongst the best lighting I’ve ever had the pleasure of dancing beneath and all the dark vibes that any dirty house clubber hungers for. In the red room, hosted by Carbon Records, Mike Oman was spinning ‘Deadly Dub’ by Optimus and the room loved it, deep house described as “continental shelf bass . . . to uncover the fossils of first wave Chicago house percussion”. Whatever the experts say, it was juicy. After a while of taking in the sounds Mike Oman was feeding us, we mooched through to the T1 room, where Paul Woodford was working up a sweat on his crowd. The music was a mix of electronic house and pure house and if it wasn’t for the fact that funky has its own realm now, I’d say it was just that as far as feeling it went. I’m no connoisseur when it comes to djs and music as I’ve said before, so I didn’t keep up with the djs for the rest of the night as we made our way between rooms, but the quality was consistently good. Fischerspooner however were the exception to that: when they were playing around 3am I remember a wave of new energy coming over me and pulling several delighted faces with their tunage. When I first passed the sign pointing the way to bingo starting at 1.30, I thought something must have fallen into my drink, but Together is a night of surprises. Having never played bingo and fancying myself as a blue rinser one day, when 1.30 hit I scurried to the upstairs bar, with Mr X hot on the trail. The upstairs bar was drowned in parlour glamour and was the perfect environment for our debauched night time version of ball games. Our host Miss Trixy and her crew were deviously chic with an edge of some narcotic fume that didn’t quite stick. The music was flowing from djs Ronnie King and The Wonderstuff, a jazz/soul inspired load of funk mixed up into a complete groove. Although to a few people this may sound like a bad combination, I adored it. Jazz owns a chunk of me and the sounds melted into the surroundings perfectly, maintaining an upbeat but not overpowering current. Meanwhile bingo was underway, with rounds of drinks, free tickets and champagne all up for grabs. Miss Trixy had a fantastic way with words: “1 and 2 ladies and gents, that’s 12 — Michael Jackson’s favourite age.” After a round of bingo it was back to the dance floor where the purists were feeding off the music like leeches on an elephant, harmlessly tapping into a huge pulsing vein of music. Although the whole club wasn’t packed out, there was a full dance floor from about 1am onwards, and by 3am those dedicated dancers were shining with a happy friendly mood. Together has been running in its current format since January and although it wasn’t really busy, I think it has a lot of potential. In fact, next months line up, which has me interested already, is set to bring headliners Josh Wink and David Guetta as well as resident Justin Robertson, x-fm’s John Kennedy and The Presets, among a spatula full of other names to titillate. And far be it for anyone to call it samey — bingo will be evolving too, or should I say mutating into “Andy and Ed’s legendary swap shop, slinky racing, retro console games.” The list of enticing entertainment continues.
