Tidy’s KDC talks Big Night Out, TWX and the future of tidy trax

Reported by mostwantedkat / Submitted 22-07-06 15:02

If every hard house label that ever existed was racked up one against the other, there would be a single name that would dominate the rest. And if you showed their logo to anyone who was even vaguely into dance music, whether it was trance, hardcore, breaks or minimalist tech-house, I’d bet my last bottom dollar that they’d recognise it.

The logo that launched a thousand tunes . . . well it feels that way!

Such is the strength of tidy trax. From its beginning ten years ago it now spans the world with its music, djs, events and tours including: a weekly Ibiza party with Extreme Euphoria that’s taken the White Isle by storm, flying in the face of every single critic who said it wouldn’t take off; The Big Night Out tour that makes all other stage productions look like a badly choreographed amateur stage show; and Weekender after Weekender, where fans come not just from across the UK, but from all around the world to enjoy the biggest djs there are and the most lavish production done on a scale that no other club or brand could even start to dream about. There’s a passion that translates from the heart of tidy that allows them to conceive and create a world where their fiercely loyal fans can come together to enjoy the most important thing of all — the music.

As the Tidy Boys gear up to take over Heaven on Friday 28 July 28 and as the ball starts to roll for the hotly anticipated TWX event, we caught up with up with someone who is, without doubt, tidy to the core, Miss Kelly Dayus-Cook . . .

Kelly with Steve Lid from Tall Trees and tidy label manager Lee Haslam

Who are you and what do you do at tidy?

My name’s Kelly and I’m Operations Manager, which basically means I do a bit of everything from booking the djs, running the website, to keeping all the boys in the office in check.

Tidy are taking over Heaven in London for the Tidy Boys’ Big Night Out on Friday July 28th. What’s the response been like from clubbers?

It’s been great, we seem to have a wicked core group that are religiously turning up to our events in London now and of course The Boys have a huge following, so those to things combined are sure to make this a cracker of an event!

Obviously you’re going up against Global Gathering. How would you sway people who might be weighing the two up against each other?

Well there aren’t any portaloos to contend with, if it rains you won’t get wet, we’ve got the Tidy Boys for 4 hours and Paul Maddox doing a 3 hour, we’ve got a 6am drinks licence, we’re cheaper by a mile and if I have to go the extra I’ll make Amo pull a moonie when he comes on stage, how’s that?

The biggest night out of your life!

Heaven’s just had a massive air conditioning unit put in — how much difference do you think this will make to the venue, and in particular to your party on the night.

Well it means my make-up might stay in place! I think it’ll make the world of difference, especially at the moment with the nights as warm as they are. Although as clubbers we should be well used to sweating our UV covered arses off, it did get rather steamy in the main room, so at least the only reason you’ll be sweating now is because you just can’t stop dancing!

It’s also the finals of the tidy/DJ Mag competition to find the next big thing. Was the standard of entry high? Did you listen to any that made you laugh?

The standard was extremely high, but it does tend to be when we run competitions but also we do receive some rotters! I’d love to run the next comp like a pop idol, I’d make a wicked female version of Simon Cowell.

What have we got to look forward to from the finalists?

From the couple that I listened to, tight mixing, great build ups, original play lists and a hell of a lot of energy. There’s definitely some real budding talent in this lot.

The prize is a set at Creamfields and a year’s dj management by tidy. Apart from an amazing sound, what else do you look for in a tidy dj?

Personality, being able to mix in key is a biggy . . . surprising how many DJ’s can’t! Energy, determination, passion and a hook . . . something to make them stand out in a crowd.

The Big Night Out album is out in August, What will we be getting for our money?

One CD’s to limber you up and one CD to get you pumping . . . (sorry, I’ve just been talking aerobics with Kieron — he loves lycra).

Seriously though, there’s one CD named ‘Big Night In’ which is basically going to fire you up as you’re donning your furry boots or trilby hats and dancing round your bedrooms. It’s a real groovy fest of basslined yumminess.

CD two is called ‘Big Night Out’ and it will be a traditional anthem filled, hands in the air extravaganza you would expect from these two.

Everyone that buys the CD also gets a code which will enable them to download exclusive tour footage, I shudder to think what antics they will get up to! But as we all know, neither are camera shy!

It’s going to be big!

Who decides what theme each Weekender is going to be and how long does it take you to come up with it?

It’s a joint decision, we all go away and think about it then throw ideas at each other (sometimes stationary too) and then come to a conclusion. Surprisingly it often happens that we all think of very similar ideas anyway, which is understandable when we spend so much time together I suppose!

If money and location were no problem, where would you most like to throw a Weekender and what would you do?

I would love to take over an island in Thailand, have everyone stay in beach front villas, have a coast line per music genre and the day time activities would be water skiing and scuba diving!

Although I wouldn’t want to work that Weekender I would like to point out . . . I’d be there for the cocktails and men in little clothing.

How much work goes on behind the scenes?

An incredible amount, sometimes you’re left with your head spinning as there’s so much going on that you don’t really know where to start. But I thrive off working like this as does everyone else, I don’t think one of us would ever enjoy a job that was samey or easy going.

. . . in fact its going to be super!

Do you get to enjoy the event or are you too busy running around like a blue-arsed fly?

The latter I’m afraid, the day I joined the working side of this industry I handed in my clubber only badge. I still immensely enjoy the events but in a different way now, instead of getting a buzz from my favourite tune breaking in, I get a buzz off of everyone else hearing that!

Out of all the Weekenders that you’ve done, which one was your favourite and why?

Ooooo crikey, that’s a really hard question. And I honestly don’t think I can pick one, they’ve all been special in their own way.

TW8 for Radio One’s involvement; TW7 because it was just so much fun; TW5 because seeing everyone get on board for our first major theme was awesome; TW1 because we all came back elated we’d even pulled it off; TW3 because a colleague of mine was found throwing their guts up in the bogs . . . hilarious; and TW4 when 4 certain djs got leathered and played in a rubber dingy and the Boys did their cyber appearance . . . I could go on and on really . . .

The theme for TWX is super heroes. What super power would most help you in your job?

The power to zap people that piss me off would be ace. No just kidding, the power to send flyers by telepathy, how cool would that be?

How’s Ibiza going? I hear you’ve absolutely rocked Es Paradis . . .

It’s awesome and still having to slightly pinch ourselves. Hard dance struggled to get a foot hold in Ibiza for so long, that to now be packing out a club week in week out . . . . When you have certain journalists banging on about how it’s dying on its arse we get to give them a big two fingers . . . have some of that!

Do you get to go out to Ibiza for the events?

I’ve been meaning to get my arse over there but it’s so hard to get time out of the office! I reckon I will get over for the closing parties though.

Ibiza is currently being rocked to its foundations!

Apparently Amber D did karaoke in front of hundreds at Mambo when she was out there for you last week — any more rock n roll tidy Ibiza stories we should know about?

No comment, I’ve taken the industry code of silence. As soon as I get a proper job I’m writing a book . . . you’ll have to buy that.

Speaking of Amber, is it true that she’s been approached to play a big part in a Hollywood blockbuster? What’s all that about?

I couldn’t possibly comment, but something very interesting did happen when we had a photo shoot for TWX and some people turned up that we didn’t expect to. All will be revealed in time . . .

How proud are you of the way EE vs tidy Ibiza has taken the island by storm for yet another year? Do feel as if you’ve properly established yourself on the island now?

Extremely proud, it’s great to be a well known night over there. It’s often dominated but certain brands so to be under the same sombrero is ticker-di-boo! And yes I think we can consider ourselves established now, the name is out there, the people are coming and the atmosphere just gets better and better!!

The Tidy Girls part 2??

tidy Digital — how’s that working out for you? You’ve got an absolutely massive list of labels and tracks on there.

It’s surpassed our expectations; the download market has certainly rocketed in the last 18 months. The list of labels has been continuously growing and growing, poor Lee has to upload and manage them all but the site is a complete credit to him really. He’s worked extremely hard to get it where it is and I think we can all pat him on the back for that.

Has selling digital files rather than vinyl made it easier for tidy Digital to expand its stock and range? I mean it’s not as if you’ve got to store them in a big warehouse or pay postal costs!

Without doubt, there’s labels on digital that we could have never stocked in vinyl, through space, the type of genre it was, the outlay costs etc. Having this platform enables us to really push the boundaries.

What do you personally prefer, vinyl or digital?

Personally I prefer digital, love the fact you hear something you want and within a minute or two it’s yours.

Do you think vinyl will stick around or will the next generation of DJs turn their noses up at it? Why?

Although I can appreciate the vinyl junkies never wanting to let go of their collections, everyone will eventually embrace the digital world, whether that be alongside vinyl or in place of it.

There’s already loads of digital only labels so if djs want those tracks they have no choice but to download it. I don’t think the new generation will turn their noses up to vinyl but I do think it will become a collectable item rather than being their only medium of consumable music

The only place to get all your hottest tracks from!

What does the future hold for tidy? Where do you see yourselves going in the next ten years?

Bigger and better things as always, every year we’ve been here we’ve achieved something new, something to put us into people’s memories so much more of that!

Of course we’ve already advertised we’re doing another New Year Weekender but also we’ve just secured the dates for TW11, so fear not peeps.

We’re doing more and more things with the joint brand of Tidy vs Extreme Euphoria, so expect to see us up and down the country with that!

Next 10 years, blimey, I don’t know where I’ll be next weekend let alone where tidy will be in the next 10 years! I guess you’ll have to watch this space, but 10 years ago we were very different to what we are now so whatever happens I expect us to be very different to what we are now! Maybe we’ll be doing events on the moon or under water?

Thanks Kelly, you’re a bonafied tidy super hero!!

...a big round of applause!

More: THE LONG HOT SUMMER

Having opened our Ibiza season with an almighty bang, the Extreme Euphoria and tidy crew are in one hell of a good mood! In fact, we’re in such buoyant spirits we’ve decided to let the cat out of the bag and tell you what we’re doing our next bout at Heaven in London.

Friday July 28th is when our next soiree takes place, and we’ve no qualms about calling it a super event! There are two main features to this edition of Tidy & Extreme Euphoria and both are as big as each other.

First up is the one of two focal points. It’s the brand new Tidy Boys Big Night Out! The dynamic duo have remixed their show stopping extravganza, just 10 months after it started, and we have to say it’s looking like the dogs bollocks! 4 hours of mayhem from the boys as they take to the stage and put on a performance of unrivalled proportions, complimented by the show’s resident side-kick the young and super talented PAUL MADDOX. Now, unlike other Big Night Out’s, this edition will feature an extra special guest in the main room. He’s been a leading force in hard house since its inception; it can only be ROB TISSERA.

For those who fancy a little variation,†take yourselves up one level to the Star Bar, where as well as 3 tidy & Extreme debuts, a smattering of national heroes have been cast to deliver another element to this ridiculously huge night! Feast your eyes on this….. ANNE SAVAGE, AMBER D, NICK SENTIENCE, SUPERFAST OZ (DEBUT), JUSTIN BOURNE (DEBUT), BEN STEVENS and NIK DENTON (DEBUT).

Room 3 is left to the capable hands of Miami Calling, delivering house electro and breaks, and with on top of that; an special treat! Donning her alter-ego as DUMB BLONDE is Anne Savage, and for those who’ve never heard her alternative set – make sure you’re down the front! Hosts LEE DAGGAR and IAN HADASSI are joined by DAVE LAMBERT, JAMIE PALKER, DOMINIC MAKIN, JAMES EARP and FRAZER CAMPBELL.

Now then, to the all important room that will see the emergence of a star in the making….. Over the past 3 months, tidy in association with DJ Magazine have been on the look out for tidy’s new superstar. We’ll have run 3 heats in varying cities around the UK, and have narrowed it down to just 4 finalists. Room 4 is where the final will take place, and we urge you to turn up in force and show your support. There can only be one winner, and by 2am, we’ll know who has won a year’s tidy management contract and set at this year’s Creamfields.

This is undoubtedly our biggest London show to date and is guaranteed to pack out! We’ve not upped the ticket price since we started, which remains at £15 plus booking fee.
