Cut the bullsh*t about Amber D being one of the best female DJs of her generation (and the one before). Amber D is one of the best DJs on the scene period, regardless of whether she’s entitled to wear a skirt or not. Every time someone mentions Amber D, they always make reference to the fact that she’s a girl. Like somehow it separates her from her male counterparts. I bet they wish it did. Without a doubt she gives them a run for their money and then some. From behind the decks she tears through the dancefloor with some of the filthiest, toughest, techiest and at points funkiest hard dance clubbers have been privileged to hear in ages. Innovative, daring, feisty and fearless, right from the start of her career she gave hard dance a much needed lashing, and heralded the start of a new era of DJ superstars.
Over the past four years Amber has worked her ass off, pulled out all the stops, given the dancefloor what it yearned for and in the process given you the clubbers some of the best nights out of your life.
2006 saw things move up a notch, with Amber being one of the most frequent names to grace the 1s and 2s at the huge tidy vs Extreme Euphoria at Es Paradis in Ibiza. She’s also taken on the world of production with her first double EP on the massive tidy label this summer. ‘Voodoo’, ‘Kiss & Tell’, ‘Kirei’ and ‘Attack Warning’ all stormed to the top of the hard dance charts, tearing out of speakers around the world.
Now she’s about to round off a phenomenal 12 months with a set at the hugely anticipated tidy New Year’s Eve Weekender in Blackpool. With thousands of hard dance maniacs ready to descend upon the northern resort plus the biggest names you could get your hands on, this is one event the faithful are not about to miss. So is Amber D prepared for another one of mammoth proportions?
Tidy’s theme for their next New Year event is the Tidy Time Machine. If you could take yourself back to any point in time and look through the eyes or any historical figure who would it be and why?
It would be through the eyes of Cleopatra I think.... Egypt has always fascinated me, and I have travelled around there twice and hopefully will be going back there again in the future. I would love to see Egypt in all its glory.... as it was when people lived there.
2006 has been a huge success for you. What do you think has been your most poignant moment?
I have had an amazing 2006, and I think the best moment was my double EP being released. I spent much time over it and I had to be 100% happy with it before I was happy to release it. Look out for more releases soon!
Can we expect anything different from Amber D in 2007?
Absolutely. I have always been known for my love of different genres, and I always like to push the boundaries of dance music, even incorporating speed garage, electro and house into my hard dance sets. Next year will see a whole new side to my DJing/producing abilities, but of course not losing my hard dance roots!
You must have played at gigs every New Year’s Eve for as long as you can remember. What’s been your most memorable one, and why?
The Tidy New Years Eve’s are always fantastic. The production is out of this world, and the crowd is always totally up for it.
Have other genres ever influenced you, even though you have played the harder edge?
Absolutely, as I said above I’ve always prided myself on being into lots of different genres.
Who in the industry is rocking your world at the moment and can we expect to see you collaborating with them?
I have always wanted to work with Mark Sherry from Public Domain, and we are booked in for the first half of the year which I am really excited about.
The melting pot is at boiling point within the industry, and every year sees a different genre rising to the top. 2006 was electro, what would you like to see surfacing in 2007?
I really like electro, as I love all things house in general. I’d like to see more tech-house and dirty techno arise next year.
Now we’re about to volley into the next year, we look ahead to the future of hard dance music and its debate of current success. With many still rallying that “hard dance is dead,” what are your thoughts?
That’s ridiculous. Hard dance will never die. It takes on different forms, which can only be a good thing. The point with hard dance is that it can mutate and change, taking elements from different genres... so saying that it is dead is like saying Amber D sings in the church choir on a Sunday.
More and more DJs are crossing the divides focusing their sound in more than one area. Do you think this something which all aspiring DJs will have to do if the future, or could they still wedge themselves into one area?
I think as a DJ, you must be very much into your music anyway, and most people who are highly musical are almost definitely into just more than one or two sounds. So it’s not a case of DJs having to divide their sound, its just a natural thing anyway to be interested in different genres. For instance, I also love Red Hot Chilli Peppers and System of a Down. It’s not just about dance music.
Over the years dance music has been used to advertise products. If you had to choose one of your productions, which would it be and what would it sell?
Ooohhhhhh… It would be my track, ‘Voodoo’ and the advert would be something to do with David Blaine — the nut case!
What classic track would you love to remix?
Ahhh, that has to be kept a closely guarded secret I am afraid. But look out for something Next Year.
If you could play any location or any venue for New Year’s Eve in the world what style would it be & where would you hold it?
It would be in Las Vegas! I have never been to the place but I know I would love it. I am hopefully going to go there next year if I can get some time off.
Music is a language that knows no borders. Can you speak any others, or which language would you like to speak?
I do sometimes end up speaking in French when I have had a bit too much to drink. It’s really weird, I just sort of slip into it.
I would love to learn Spanish, and plan to go for lessons next year.
I bet you’ve done some wild things in your time at New Year parties. Care to share your most memorable?
To be honest I don’t get up to much at New Year parties, as I am always so busy DJing. This year I have a driver though, so I may have a few sherries!!!
Have you ever made a New Year’s Resolution and stuck to it?
Yes, I made one to go to the gym, and I still go now 1–3 times a week, depending on how busy I am.
And finally, what can we expect to see from Amber D in 2007?
Lots more fun and frolicks! Lots of great production, and branching out into new arenas and hopefully a lot more international stuff, but of course never forgetting my UK Roots!!
