M.I.D.O.R says YES! to his first ever UK appearance

Reported by JC-TAKTIKAL / Submitted 08-05-07 10:40

Over these past twelve months it’s been hard to log onto any website, read any magazine or navigate any Digital Download sites without M.I.D.O.R being very much the topic of conversation. He has continued to impress and prove his talents as an outstanding producer, so much so that he is now regarded as one of the best producers on the scene by heavyweights such as Tiesto, Armin, Ferry Corsten and Marco V.

Like a fine wine M.I.D.O.R’s sound has blossomed with time and he’s had countless ground breaking releases out over the past year on labels such as Intensive, Galactive and Fundamental as well as boasting a plethora of releases on Trance mega label Five AM. He has now deservedly been boosted to super star status and on May 19th 2007, he will be visiting London for a UK exclusive set at YES!

Ladies and Gentlemen, boys and girls, YES! are very proud to introduce MIDOR!

Your forthcoming set at YES! is a UK Exclusive. How excited are you about showing us London folk what you can do behind the decks?

I'm really looking forward to it! The party looks rocking, I can’t wait to showcase my new productions to the London crowd.

Just to clear up any confusion, yourself and Eelke Kleijn produce under the name M.I.D.O.R but you DJ alone under the same name, is that correct?

Well, not really. I started making music together with Eelke under the M.I.D.O.R. & Six4Eight alias. M.I.D.O.R. has always been my alias. I’ve been making the tracks alone for the past year and a half due to the fact that Eelke and I have different tastes in music. We wanted to focus more and our own styles. The collaborations with Re:locate or Octagen are also just me and Paul Moelands and have nothing to do with Eelke.

You only met Eelke in 2002, and your tracks began to get signed only a year later, did you ever think that thing’s would go so well so quickly for you both?

When I met Eelke we were both in the same producing phase with similar equipment and producing skills. We really learned a lot from each other and it was just the thing we needed to get things signed. From that moment on there was a huge demand for our tracks, which was absolutely great of course

Most producers start their life in the scene by DJing first then moving into production at a later stage, but for you it happened the other way round. Would you like to continue with the DJing and carve a successful DJ career for yourself or do you prefer making tracks in the studio?

Producing tracks is great and when I still have the ideas and inspiration I will certainly continue to produce. I only make things that I like and I’m always trying to be as original as possible. In Five AM I have a great partner because they totally get what I’m trying to do in my tracks and they give me all the freedom to experiment.

The DJing part wasn’t really important to me in the beginning and is still behind the producing part. However, its gaining terrain because its great to see the response of the people when you play your own tracks.

I would best describe your production sound as groovy, tech trance. When you DJ do you play the same style or do you like to vary things a little? More techy or more trancey?

I try to vary things a bit. Some countries or clubs expect you to play a certain style because a productions did well that country. But I always try to fit in some other things as well. Overall I think I play more techy then trancy.

I have been involved in the music industry for many years now and one thing I’ve noticed over the years is that all the best producers come from Holland! Marco V, Sander Van Doorn, Mac Zimms and now M.I.D.O.R! What’s the Dutch secret?

Maybe its something in the air or in the water? I have no idea why Dutch producers do so well. A guy in Spain told me that Dutch people are very detailed producers and that gives the tracks a little extra. So maybe that’s it. A Polish guy once said that Dutch people know how to build a break and know what melodies will catch on. That helps as well of course. So the answer must be a combination of all those things I guess.

Can you tell us about any other pseudonyms that you produce under?

M.I.D.O.R. is the most important alias I use and it’s the one I will continue using. I did some mainly trance tracks under the Aegan alias. I made a few techy tracks under the Phantom Force alias together with Arctic Quest. We also did some Somatic Sense remixes in 2002 – 2003 and thats basically it. I don’t use a lot of different names.

Whilst looking over your website, I saw some snaps of your studio and I don’t mind admitting I was a little (a lot) jealous! For the Technology lovers (Geeks to our friends) out there, can you give us a brief run down as to what software and hardware you use and what is your favourite piece of kit?

I use a combination of hardware and software these days. The studio pictures aren’t really up to date. I use 2 hardware synths; Novation Supernova II and a Access Virus Ti. The rest is all software. I use Trilogy, Atmosphere, Albino, FM8, Battery and a huge amount of plugins.

You host 4 different radio shows, as well as holding down a gruelling production and DJing schedule. Do you find it hard fitting all this in and do you have any time to yourself?

Yes, its hard to find the time to fit everything in. I may have to save some time in the future maybe by doing less radio shows. Producing is the most important thing for me.

It sees that no matter how hard you try these days, you can’t read an interview with a DJ without the interviewer asking about the ‘Digital Revolution’ and the DJs thoughts on it. So, true to form, what are your thoughts on the Digital Revolution and the fall of vinyl?

For me the Digital Revolution is a good thing because your tracks and radio sets reach a lot of people. It is only a matter of time before people give up on vinyl. I have a lot of vinyl as well because its still has value to me. But I understand the advantages of mp3. It’s much cheaper to release and so it’s much cheaper to buy. One thing I miss about vinyl it the great sleeves the labels used to design. I’ve had about 60 vinyl releases and that collection of vinyl adds a little extra for me personally. Its hard evidence that you really released something. That feeling is a little different with mp3’s.

Wicked, thanks for your time and we look forward to hearing what you have in store for us in on May 19th. Just say…YES!

@ Hidden May 19th 2007
9pm till 6am

The leaves sit still in an ominous calm, the singing birds begin to fly east as the sky begins to darken and the clouds roll in from the west with sinister intention. A silent whisper falls over the streets of London accompanied by a sullen, threatening roar, the people are talking. An electrifying flash of blue strikes in the horizon, the air is hot, humid and intoxicating. The whisper begins to get louder and louder and louder until the whisper is no more the only words to be heard are… YES! is BACK!

The first ever Yes! concept was unveiled in London on December 3rd 2005. Celebrating the establishing of tech-trance imprint TEKELEC records by Ali Wilson and the signing of the studio’s resident producers Lee Osborne and Matt Smallwood. The event was only ever meant to be a one off party but the success soon began to rollercoaster and take on a life of its own. Innovative in their design the Yes! musical programming refused to conform, fusing tech-trance, electro, breaks and minimal into one genre defying element of sound few could resist. Combining exclusive ‘never seen before’ performances from across the globe and homegrown pioneers, Yes! soon became the most talked about event in London.

After a number of successful show stopping events starring dance music revolutionaries such as John Askew, Stoneface & Terminal, Scott Bond, Ronski Speed, Ian Betts, Max Cooper, Rebekah, Electrilogy, Tom Real and Raw Hedroom the Yes! team are back and the formula more potent than ever before. The dance floor revolution has begun… sit up and take notice, this is how it’s done! Just Say YES!

Staying true to form, the YES! team have pulled out all the stops for this roadblock of an event, and the two headlining acts for this special night are none other than Dutch superstars….

….MAC ZIMMS and M.I.D.O.R!!

YES! are never fearful to be at the forefront of the scene and are always looking to display fresh, new talent in their DJ line ups and offer something to the clubbers that nobody in London has done before. This party is no exception as we welcome, with his first ever UK appearance, M.I.D.O.R! Rutger Van Bostelen (M.I.D.O.R) has recently shot to fame due to consistently delivering the goods from the studio in his home land of Holland, to dance floors all over the globe! He now boasts a discography that any producer would be proud of that spans over 20 different labels, and a now gruelling worldwide DJ schedule. (You can check out his latest offerings on FiveAM at www.djmidor.com)

Appearing alongside his fellow Dutch superstar will be long time serving and all round Techno and Trance legend, MAC ZIMMS! Mac has been destroying dance floors for 15 years and has put out well over 100 original tracks, so to say we are proud to have him on board, is a slight understatement!! He regularly visits the US, Canada, South Africa, Asia and all over Europe, and on Saturday May 19th it’s London’s turn to see the master at work! With the fresh new sounds of MIDOR, and the legendary stature of Mac Zimms, this is one party you do not want to miss. Book your place on the dance floor now and be part of the revolution once again…
