There really is only one Type 1
Reported by JC-TAKTIKAL

There is a magical place just east of London town, a place where dreams can become a TV reality, where the air is filled with the latest French perfume, the hills are high and the skirts are short, where an xr21 means more than PHD, where Dave loves Tracy and Tracy proper loves Dave. Where the blondes are bleached and the tan is sprayed with daily routine.
Now there is only one Essex and there is certainly only one Type 1! Take two likely lads from Basildon with a passion for underground music, put them in one of the best clubs in the world, give them 10 kilowats of controlled bassline and lots and lots and lots of bourbon… and it’s errr an interesting combination.
So guys how are you doing today?
We’re really good mate, looking forward to a busy summer and feeling wicked about where we are right now!
So for those who aren’t acquainted with you give the punters a quick run down of who you are?
For those of you who don’t know, we are Type 1 and we have been DJ’n for around seven years now, mostly on the hard dance circuit. It’s taken us to places like Poland, Amsterdam, Ibiza… many times playing for the likes of Polysexual, Frantic and Heat. We’ve had residencies for numerous nights including the legendary Riot! @ The End.
As time has gone on our music tastes have started changing, especially recently. We are right into the techno/minimal techno sound and is what we are currently playing out.
From hard dance to funky techno and now to minimal/techno what was your decision to move to this new sound?
While DJ’n in Ibiza we went to Circo Loco @ DC10 and were blown away with the mad party vibe they have going on out there. The crowd loves it as it is such a fresh sound. Although our sound is tougher it inspired us to change and although it was a big risky decision we felt straight away that it was the right move just because we are passionate about the music — some things you just gotta do and techno is one of them for us!
You talk about DC10 and your inspiration — which DJs are doing it for you right now and have given you your inspiration.
Luciano
Richie Hawtin
Sven vath
Riccardo Villalobos
Mr C
Shane Watcha
Loco Dice
If you are only to see one of them see ‘Luciano’ — he will blow you away.
How does the scene differ from hard dance?
Techno/minimal is a more cheeky style of music — it is not about getting completely out of your box and stomping till you have no feet left, not that there isn’t a time for this as we still love the harder edged music.
It is massive in Europe and the world over as is an ‘up and coming’ type of music much the same as electro (we are talking in the world scheme of things). The crowds seem to flock to it, girls and boys, because it is fresh, new and sleazy!
We are currently buying around 50 new tracks a month. It’s so refreshing not to have to play the same old shit….
We hear you’re using ‘Deckadance’, tell us what this is all about?
We’ve now joined the laptop mixing revolution! We decided to give it a go and we love it — just through ease of use and not having to worry if in the previous club you have scratched your CD. It is perfect for DJ’ing. We use a combination of the laptop, CD and real vinyl. It’s whatever goes.
You recently took up a new residency at Maximal. How did this come about.
We had been listening to minimal for a year or so and had been already buying the tunes ready for playing out when we got told about a new night called ‘Maximal’. They wanted to make us a part of it and we jumped at the chance as it was a way to play the music that we’re into.
The first weekend we played there — the opening night for ‘Maximal Underground’ — was awesome. The club was packed and the vibe was alive! We all had three days to promote the night but it came together and with a packed Cross Maximal Underground were offered a monthly residency there.
What are your plans for the future. Where do you want to take this?
We’ve got lots of plans in the pipeline, plans to build a reputation in the techno scene now which is a hard job now but were more than up for it. Tighten up our productions ready for our Subtronika label, be a part of Maximal’s rise to the top and ultimately become a success in the music industry as it is what we love to do and will continue to play our part till the day we die.
If you could play in any club what would it be?
Glenn: Oh that’s a hard one as there are so many. I think mine would be Amnesia in Ibiza or Watergate in Berlin and DC10.
Baz: All of the above for me and on our own turf it has to be Fabric.
What’s happening with your Subtronika label?
We are currently both working hard in the studio together and will be releasing two tracks in September, so watch this space.
We have a three track EP by a producer in Italy called AC Project which will be released mid August.
We also have another EP from NDKJ that will be released in October.
Where do you see yourself in two years time?
Years ago when were into oink hard house we went through a transition period where we took some time out to refine our sound, find our feet in the scene and our place. We also did this when we were made residents for Riot! and developed a new sound, which was funky techno and we were playing that sound for around a year.
We feel like we are going through that stage again now and in two years you will see us pushing forward harder than ever as it is the only way we know how. We will make type 1 and the Subtronika label a success. Watch this space.
You always play last set at Maximal at the Cross — what’s that like?
Our music is different from all the other DJs’ that play at Maximal as we only play techno, which takes the night up a notch to round things of nicely. They really respond to it really well.
The vibe is so good at Maximal. It is still a joy to play to people who love music and love to party.
And what can we expect from you on the twentieth?
The typical Type 1 madness — the party starts early and so do we, so we will be at the bar and finish the night off true type 1 style.
See you there!

The dark eve creeps in suddenly over the hot and humid summer sky, mellow yellows and perfected purples are over shadowed with a white glow as the moon begins to rise.
The nocturnal creatures begin to move through the streets, fixated on the anticipation of what could happen. This is undiluted, unashamed sound of the underground… Welcome one & all the world of Maximal.
On July 20th at 11pm, Maximal Underground returns to its monthly residency at The Cross. Its concept, to bring you the most cutting edge music, djs, producers and promotions from across the country and all under one roof. Three arches of the best House, electro, driving minimal, breaks and tribal melodic grooves brought to you by the leading parties on the scene right now.
This month starring in our main room is the man who began it all at our debut event at The Cross 8 months ago. This hotly tipped young producer has since gone on to remix D.Ramirez, MYNC project, Claude Von Stroke, Tom Pooks, Josh Wink and Meat Katie and solo releases on CR2 and Brique / Kill Rouge… his name is Jamie McHugh.
Alongside the man is question we have our resident young star in the making… Chris Barratt and with releases on ‘Jesus Loved You’, 3 tracks signed to Roger Sanchez’s Stealth Records, remixes on DeepDish’s very own label and a almighty reworking of Josh Winks ‘Higher State of Conciousness’ on Strictly Rhythm Records coming up very soon! Not only this we have our very favourite residents Matt Thompson, Filth & Splendour, and Type 1. Expect a samurai edge to this music cos it aint gonna any sharper.
In the terrace we are proud to be joined by exciting new promotion hailing from the northern quarter… NeverNeverLand. They will be creating an enchanted and twisted discoteque of fiendish electronica from dusk till dawn with BBC Radio One's / Codex's very own Nico De Ceglia alongside Devore’s very own Mitch and resident’s Laura Heath and Dave James.
In our VIP room we have the sexiest night time vixens as our hosts the salacious Sophisticated Dance. These very important people will be pushing the very finest tribal melodic house brought to you by Stefan Housley, Pandora S-K plus guests.
