Big Halloween Ball with M8 Magazine: Reviewed

You keep hearing hard house and hard dance is dead, nobody goes out anymore, cybers dead and its all rubbish, however on arriving to Cambridge, I was to find this totally opposite. BIG had assembled a line up for their Halloween Ball with M8 Magazine that certainly hit the mark, and was to draw the clubbing faithful in.
Consisting of headliners Lisa Pinup, Kutski, DJ XLAB4, Andy Farley and Darren Styles, there was a whole host of hard beats to be treated to and we talked about each one on the drive there. After parking up and finding The Junction, situated on a out of town industrial area meets leisure park type place, I instantly heard the sounds of hard house spilling out onto the street. The DJ Competition at Bar Nusha, the pre club bar, was in full swing, clubbers literally having it on the tiny dance floor in cyber and Halloween costumes, all drinking and getting into the party spirit early. Great I thought, a good night beckons!
With a variety of clubbers crammed into the small bar, the vibe was going off and everybody seemed happy and friendly, even after travelling from Cornwall I didn’t feel out of place, in fact compared to recent times from my local scene, for myself, it was like walking into a time warp, but a good one.
The Junction Club is literally a few metres walk across from Bar Nusha, and the queue was rapidly growing way before the club was due to open. After getting in the club (and getting another drink from the bar), I caught up with BIG resident Paul Wikerson, warming the crowd up with some quality driving energetic hard dance. He pulled off a great set that was to provide the foundations to a solid night. BIG Ben took the helm and continued to play more hard dance with some great bootlegs that seemed to fire up the clubbers well; again the music wasn’t peaking too much yet and it felt just right.
Midnight came and Kutski entered the fray for the first headline set. After a sure fire start with some pounding hard trance mashups and good hardstyle tracks, everybody was left confused by a massive alarm bell ringing, no it wasn’t the track surprisingly, but a real fire alarm… everybody out!
The security seemed to not be totally sure what to do and where to send people, but everybody left and stood in the cold whilst a fire engine arrived. Right now, I was thinking great, this night is going to be ruined but after the alarm was cleared and the clubbers let back in, Kutski belted out more banging hardstyle with loads of scratching and credit to the clubbers they didn’t let the little hitch stop or ruin the night; the dancefloor was filled again pretty quick, the party was back on. Unlike his earlier mashing it up, style wise, Kutski got a bit samey for me personally and the set all blurred into one, so I went and checked out he hardcore room upstairs.
Compared to the main room downstairs it was tiny and a sweatbox of activity. On hearing the hardcore version of Nalin & Kanes Cruising, I have to admit that was enough for me, hardcore’s not my taste and I couldn’t hack it, so I ventured back downstairs.
Lisa Pin-Up was up on the decks and as ever the clubbers got all excited for the hard dance favourite. Working the crowd up and slamming out the hard dance meets hard house and hardstyle tunes, she didn’t disappoint and as ever posed for photos with the clubbers keeping her ever popular self just that.
The so called VIP Area, (which consisted of a few sofas and a bar) had some M8 Magazines for perusal and was an opportunity to sit down away from the hard beats. It was hard to establish what really made it a VIP area and different to be honest.
The night was in full swing now and Andy Farley was due to play. Awesome mixing and keeping it varied throughout his set he verged into hard house and hard dance well, he even slipped in a few crowd favourites like BK’s Bad Ass which got a nice response from the floor.
DJ X, in another life known as Les from LAB4, was to close the night and style wise wasn’t quite what I was expecting, honestly I expected hard as nails tough hard dance, but it felt somewhat cheesier then the other DJs and almost sounded as if he played safe.
It was good to see that BIG made a solid effort musically, along with good work with the production of the venue; they had set times on show, plus the door seemed pretty well organised and the pre-club bar was busy. Even with a fire alarm, the night went off and I cant argue that I had a good night and I am intrigued to see their future events of this scale. In all BIG's Halloween ball = a success!
