The Organ Donors performing in nothing but marigolds? It must be Puzzle Project!

Reported by Gordon Darley / Submitted 27-08-08 14:12

As some of you will have noticed, Puzzle Project is fast approaching its third birthday on Friday 12th September. During our time at the 414, Organ Donors have been a favourite of us and our regulars with their unique take on jockeying discs. The timing couldn't be better as not only is it time to celebrate another year for the party, the date falls very close to the release date of one of the most talked about hard dance albums of recent times, Old Skool Autopsy on Tidy where the lads fuse old skool favourites (some less obvious than others) with more upfront, home-made beats!

Hi guys, it's been more than a while since you last came down to play at Puzzle Project and at the 414. We want to know if you have missed us as much as we've missed you?

Hey, yeah we have spent many a night sobbing man, it’s been emotional! We miss you guys too! But seriously, it’s been a while and we’re really looking forward to playing for you guys again.

414 is well known as being an intimate venue and every time you guys come down, we always bring the stage out to play to bring the crowd that little bit closer to the artists. What do you think are the advantages of playing smaller clubs and getting closer to the clubbers?

This is how it all started for us and the kind of environment we thrive in. From house parties to garages, decks on car bonnets in the middle of the new forest! Phone boxes!
We have said many times that you just can’t beat that up close and personal feel. With the right crowd it’s our favourite places to play. It’s good also because it gives the crowd a chance to see what we are getting up to behind the decks.

Okay, onto your recent project, which I know has been much talked about recently. Your Old Skool Autopsy album is due out on Tidy very soon; what's the coup with this?

Yeah it’s been a long old slog! Nearly two years in the making. We decided we wanted to pay homage to some of our favourite and most influential dance tracks from the past 20 years, focusing predominately on the days of acid house and rave from 88-92. It was around this time we discovered a sound that would change our entire direction in life and so we are very passionate about our old skool roots.

We have covered 15 tracks bringing them up to date but with out losing their old skool flavour and essence. The album is a continuous journey from tough house / techno / trance and hardstyle, all cleverly pieced together in the studio without the use of Ableton or as a standard DJmix!

What were the main reasons behind putting this album into practice? Was there already material that you had ready for it before you even considered making the album?

Well we had already been looking back to our old skool roots for inspiration, I think all music has come full circle with lots of people sampling old tunes again. At the beginning of last year we were approached and asked to remix Altern8 - Activate (A classic old skool tune from 1991) just as an exclusive track for a Helter Skelter compilation album. After really struggling for a couple of weeks and nearly admitting defeat we suddenly had some divine inspiration and the track came out awesome! It was so much fun to make using all the classic stabs and vocal samples. We tried to push the boat out a bit, not conforming to the norm. It was here where we had the idea to do a whole album dedicated to old skool and the theme continued throughout the entire album. Classic old skool with a modern twist!

One of the things that surprised us when listening to the album was the selection of older tracks used as they aren't the obvious choices that you would expect (Moby's Go and the Super Mario Brothers theme spring to mind especially!). How long did it take you to work out which tracks you were going to use and what were you trying to achieve with this selection?

Don’t be slagging off Moby, haha! I actually thought that was one of the more obvious ones! But no that’s a good thing as this is part of what the album is about. When we were younger we used to get wrecked and take it in turns on the decks whilst the other would be playing Super Mario Brothers. That’s the reason behind that tune. It’s essentially an old skool classic game though eh, ha!

But the tune selection is also about the tunes that inspired us growing up and getting into the rave scene. Every track has a story and a defining moment in our lives behind it. There were some legal restraints that stopped us from remixing artists such as The Prodigy and obviously some people will not recognize the whole track list, but they were classics to us. There were just so many tunes to choose from, we could of spent five years making this album! But we had to draw the line somewhere.

You've been around for a while on the hard dance scene and no doubt have seen plenty of other attempts at recreating the magic of yesteryear by bootlegging and remixing seminal tracks; What have been the best and worst of these attempts that you have heard?

I think the Mr Sam remix of Dominator is pretty fat, BK's Such A Feeling (our remix was pretty good too ha!).

Sh*t man I have gone completely blank! Far to much partying! There have certainly been some shocking attempts but there is no way I’m gonna start slaggin ‘em off on here. I ain’t Simon Cowell and it ain’t good for business! Haha!

What's your personal favourite track on the album and why?

That’s a tough one, maybe the last track Inner City Life. This is a completely different style for us and gave us a bit of freedom to experiment. We are just really happy with the finished result and couldn’t really single out a favourite track.

Last but not least, tell us why we should come to Puzzle Project's 3rd birthday on Friday 12th September.

Guys, you should come to Puzzle Project because it’s a wicked little club with a great atmosphere and we have had a great night every time we played. Also Scott has sworn that if its busy he is gonna perform stark naked wearing nothing but a pair of knee high rubber fetish boots and a pair of marigolds!! Haha!

More: We've only gone and bloody done it, haven't we? That's right, we've gone and done what a lot of parties can't manage by reaching our third year, which in this game sets us up to receive our freedom pass for the buses! If that isn't cause for a wee celebration, we're dumbfounded as to what is...

After 36 events, and over 288 hours of sheer hard partying, it's time we excelled even our own standards yet again with a line-up to blow the socks off our usual offering of top jocks! Some of you may have already heard who we've drafted in to take the controls for this landmark even, and thos who haven't better sit down before reading the following...

Realistically, we could never even consider having just one headline guest for this event so we haven't bothered. We've gone for all the 3s!

3 years on
3 headline acts
3 times the dance floor mayhem

Organ Donors have for a long time been a firm favourite with Puzzle Project, having been booked about as regularly as they get at the party. This time we invite them down to show off their latest creation in the shape of their new artist album on Tidy, “Old Skool Autopsy”! That’s right, Scott and Matt join us in Brixton longest serving hard dance venue as part of the eagerly anticipated launch tour. Word from resident Gordon Darley, who has already had the pleasure of hearing the album, is that this is going to blow your socks completely off with a genius blend of old skool classics with more upfront techno and European sounds. Don those white gloves and brace yourselves people…

Is it a bird? No... Is it a plane? Definitely not... Is it hard dance uber producer and scene legend, BK? Yes, actually it is and he to has a new album to show the world as we also play part in the launch tour for his new album “BK presents…The New Wave”.
We're on for one wild night with this one folks, as we invite possibly the biggest innovator the world of hard dance has ever seen to the 414. Just in case you need reminding, BK has been the Number 1 producer on the scene for well over 8 years, having been main nob-twiddler at Nukleuz. To say this man is the personification of class harder music would be the understatement of a life-time!

The last of our head liners is a familiar name on the world circuit. Well, lots of familiar names as it goes. Some of you may know him as Jurgen Vries, some as Angelic and Orion. All of us I'd imagine, know him as DT8 Project... That's right people, we bring to the 414 the shockingly talented Darren Tate! Darren has worked with more movers and shakers than the average man can count, from Judge Jules to Charlotte Church and has mixed compilation albums like Beyond Euphoria. All in all, he's been everywhere and done it all in the world of dance music and truly is a superstar….

We know that this is more than enough, but we still have more to keep you all occupied in the shape of Party Proactive breaks extraordinaire, and the boy your parents warned you about; Steelo, who is joined by Magnetix resident/co-promoter and DIFM’s Dean Zone to accompany residents Phil Lankester (aka Libra 9) with his signature Ableton psy-trance set, Ben Bennett who will be closing proceedings with his first laptop set of his trademark driving upfront hard trance (which is being recorded for Kiss FM!), trance and uplifting hard dance master Matt Church and the ever-handsome Gordon Darley who has some freshly signed material and all sorts of tough promos to unleash…

Be part of the Puzzle…
