The Disco of Doooooooom - The Interview!

Rising out of the belly of the underworld comes Disco of Doom, the brand new project from award-winning production and DJ duo Tom Real and The Rogue Element, spawned from the depths of their monthly on-demand show on leading internet radio station Samurai FM.
Who are you and how did you meet each other?
RE: I first met Tom in around 2000 through his brother Ed who used to manage a band that a couple of my best mates were in - we used to go to a lot of warehouse raves around that time and eventually we both decided to move to London at the same time and lived together for a year, which was when we started writing together.
What’s the concept behind Disco of Doom?
RE: The reasoning behind it was that we just wanted to establish a project that wouldn't keep us confined to one genre and allow us to write and play music that reflects our eclectic tastes and not feel we had to just play and write breakbeat or techno or whatever. It also gives me a chance to cut loose a bit - I think the DoD stuff is a little less serious than my own music, maybe a bit cheekier - Tom being a cheeky fellow to say the least.
Describe your first release ‘EP1’ out on Passenger Records.
TR: Freaky electro with big basslines made to destroy dance floors! We wanted to provide an EP that would join the dots between what we’re known for and music we’re into now. There’s a lot of influences from the likes of Hervé and Sinden as this is what we were both listening to when we made the EP but we feel it’s got our own unique twist.
What are the pros and cons of producing with someone else?
RE: I only really work with Tom these days so I couldn't comment in a general sense, but t definitely takes a little more of the pressure off and you can bounce off each other. Not literally of course.
TM: For me the pros are learning new skills and techniques as well as being able to make decisions quickly as opposed to if you were working alone where you could easily get trapped pontificating about whether the high hat is the right timbre for the snare drum. The cons are having to compromise your ideas as well as having to be second best to your collaborating partners’ solo project.
Who / what would you say were your main musical influences?
RE: Anything I hear that I think I can get away with nicking! (Oooh, so Daft Punk! – Ed) On a serious note, Leftfield, The Chemical Brothers, Underworld, Prince, Deftones, RATM, too many to list really.
What’s been the best party that you guys have played at together?
TM: As Disco OF Doom I think it was a UK club called Hoodoo in Nottingham; it was one of the first gigs we did, it was their first birthday and it was a complete sell out. We came on after Elite Force and smashed the place apart, really being able to play whatever the hell we liked which is well, what Disco Of Doom is all about! As Tom Real and The Rogue Element is was either one of our two Glade festival performances, being stood in front of thousands of people going bonkers to your sound is absolutely crazy!
And the worst?!
RE: I'm not saying..!
TR: I’ll be honest, I don’t think we’ve had a worst gig yet (touch wood!) must be something about the power of Tom Real & The Rogue Element!
What’s your top 3 favourite records in the Disco of Doom box at present?
RE:
1. Hive - my newest single, coming out in November
2. New Japanese Popstars remix of the Ting Tings - Be The One
3. Boys Noize remix of A-trak - 'They Say Woah'
TR:
1. Chemical Brothers – Electronic Battle Weapon 10
2. Lutzenkirchen ‘Cuba’
3. Sunglasses At Night – Alter Ego Rmx.
What record do you currently loath?
RE: I don't waste my energy hating on stuff, if I don't like it I ignore it as a general rule!
What’s next for the Disco of Doom?
TR: Well EP 1 is the first of many, when I get back from Burning Man we’re going to lock ourselves away and get the next EP together and potentially some remixes too.
