Marco V Charges Up To Smash The Gallery!

February 6th sees Dutch godfather of all things electronic Marco V hit one of London's most legendary parties, The Gallery. A firm favourite at this dance music institution, Marco's blend of trance, tech, filth and funk is equalled by none and imitated by many. Catch him live at the Ministry of Sound but before that, take this exclusive HarderFaster chance to get to know this titan of the 1s and 2s a little better!
So Marco, how was your Christmas and New Year? What does an international super star DJ get up to over the festive season? Did you get anything nice for Christmas?
Christmas and New Year where both very nice, I didn’t get anything special for Christmas. It’s not that bad though, we have another day in the year when we give each other presents! It’s the 5th of December and it’s called Sinterklaas.
The Sensation Party in Melbourne was the first one they’ve had in Australia – did that make for a different kind of atmosphere from other Sensations you did in 2008?
Of course, all the Sensation gigs are fantastic and this one was very special because not only was it was for New Years Eve, which means that everybody is up for a party a bit more than usual, but it was also the very first time that the Sensation party had been taken to Australia. To be asked to headline the event was a real privilege, I had an amazing time and it was great to feel such a charged atmosphere and to see people taking onboard a Sensation party for the very first time.
What was it like getting on a plane to Australia, playing and then flying back again? Is it worth it? Did you get to see anything of Australia at all or did you just want to get back home?
I’ve been travelling for the last 10 years all over the world so I am pretty used to it. I kept my routine in my own time zone so jet lag wasn’t a big problem for me. I didn’t get to see too much of the country this time because it was straight there and straight back but I have been to Australia a few times before and seen a lot of amazing scenery, and I will be back in Australia in April for a Trance Energy tour.
Luckily London is a lot closer to home and you’ve certainly been clocking up the air miles coming here to play at Gallery. What is it about the night that you like so much?
The Gallery was the first gig I ever had in England, and still today I have a special something with the Gallery that I can’t describe. It’s the whole atmosphere that makes me want to play there over and over again.
The big move for the party last year was leaving Turnmills to take on the Ministry of Sound. Looking back after a couple of months at the new venue, what’s the biggest change for you as a DJ between the two places?
The biggest change for me is the DJ booth. Before the DJ booth was very ‘private’ and I couldn’t see what was going on at the dance floor, which was very special and nice – you could get caught up in your little world of music. At the MoS I am part of the crowd which makes for a completely different experience – you open yourself up to the crowd, to the reactions, to the energy. You can see straight away what’s working, what’s not, what direction you can go down that will really bring everybody together. It allows for an amazing synergy between you and the club. Turnmills was special in its own way and it has a very special place in my heart, but Ministry was definitely the best place for the night to go to after, it’s given the party a whole new dimension.
Do you think that The Gallery would work anywhere else apart from London? Why?
Of course. It’s such a strong brand and party, everybody knows about it, it’s legendary around the world and people come from all over just to come and party with us. I can’t see why a Godskitchen, Gatecrasher or Cream party works abroad and the Gallery not. It would definitely be interesting to see what would happen if they did!
Will you be dropping any surprise new productions into the mix on the night?
I am so excited about my new artist album and I am going to drop a lot of stuff from that. It’ll be one of the first times I’ve played some of these tunes in the UK so I’m really looking forward to seeing how you guys react to them.
How was Ibiza for you last year? Do you think the credit crunch is going to have any effect on the island this year?
Ibiza was great, both Amnesia and the Judgement Sunday night were super. Talking about the financial side of things, I think by the time summer come the whole ‘credit thing’ will have calmed down a bit and won’t have too much effect on the island.
With all this doom and gloom about the economy, surely the perfect way to cheer ourselves up would be for you to throw another of your In Charge Outdoor events – any plans for 2009?
Yes, I hope so. I found another beautiful open-air location where I want to drop In Charge Outdoor 2009. I’m not sure if I can get everything organised to hold the party there but I’m definitely going to try – just make sure you keep your eyes peeled when tickets come out because I was amazed at how fast they sold for 2008 – but then again it was a very good party!
What made you decide to throw such a big party in the first place?
It’s nice to have your own party where you can do everything you think it’s best for the party. Line up, sound system, decorations, lights etc. Obviously I’ve spent a lot of time playing at some of the biggest festivals in the world so I know how things work, but I always had a picture on my head of how I’d do it if I got the chance. When I got the opportunity I just thought, “Yes, let’s do it!” It’s been amazing each time; hopefully everybody that came had as good a time as I did.
Armin has his Armin Only, Tiesto’s got In Search Of Sunrise, Ferry has Full On Ferry – would you consider putting In Charge Outdoors into a similar kind of format and taking it on tour like they do? I know a lot of people would absolutely love to see you do it.
I am a real control freak and want to be involved in everything. To put a party on like this is not as easy as it takes months of work to plan and put together. One time a year is enough stress for me! And I think that also makes it a bit more special, that it only happens the once, no?

February is here already and to kick start the month’s festivities we welcome back the Dutch purveyor of beats, Mr Marco V to London’s Ministry of Sound on Friday 6th February. After once more storming The Gallery in December as well as providing a truly memorable Gallery Xmas CD, Marco is back to do it all over again. With a real cross section of musical influences and styles this producer / DJ is always a guaranteed crowd pleaser and continues to raise eyebrows with a unique sound that is continually evolving. Never one to be pigeon holed, the MOS’s awesome sound system in the Box provides the perfect surroundings to truly appreciate this legends bevy of anthems and tunage. A recent run of new tunage has proved once more Marco’s credentials as one of the finest and most consistent producers around. Tracks such as ‘Coma Aid’ and ‘A Journey Into Sound’ have been blowing up in the Gallery main room for some time now and we are eager to hear the latest studio offerings from the Dutchman. Joined by Gallery resident Sister Bliss, providing the perfect warm up to Marco, Bliss continues to wow The Gallery faithful with her main room sound always rocking the joint in every possible way. Her last appearance was the all important midnight set at our massive New Years Eve event where she appeared alongside Faithless percussionist Suddha and brought 2009 in with style. The Box welcomes a debutant tonight in the shape of Ricky Stone, a rising talent from Asia Ricky has been a consistent name the world over and in the DJ Mag Top 100. 2008 saw numerous tours including closing the Beijing Olympics in China. Another rising star makes a welcome return to The Gallery in the shape of Marcus Schossow. Marcus has impressed on his several visits to The Gallery with his unique sound and productions bringing a new take to the later more trancey sounds we know and love. Warm up resident Gavyn Mytchel gets the Box going early doors in his usual, much loved style whilst The Viceroy continues his main room residency with closing set duties once more.
The Bar meanwhile welcomes headliner Pete Gooding, an ever present name the world over his Global Network radio show is now syndicated worldwide, including Friday and Sunday nights on Ministry Of Sound radio, Global Radio in Ibiza and Push FM in London, amongst many others. Pete has also been very busy on the production front, having recently signed an album project, ‘Doman & Gooding’, along with studio partner James Doman, to Positiva Records. The first single, ‘Runnin'’, is due for release in February 2009 and is already shaping up to be massive. Early support has come from Radio 1’s Pete Tong on his Essential Selection show, while remixes from Mark Knight & Funkagenda will follow soon. Filthy Rich and Young Punx round off a trio of headliners for the Bar with new talent on show from Natalie Parker and James Edwards & Dave Minns. Next door in the Baby Box Evissa provide a Balearic night of musical bliss, leaving the Subbass DJs to rock it out in the Lounge.
