PunchFunk & Geushky Presents "Let's Make Rave" with Ian Void & Chris Vaux

Reported by K8-e / Submitted 11-10-10 22:39

What do you get when you combine two of Portsmouth's most favourite, longest running events? Bringing together techno titan Geushky and house and techno heavyweight PunchFunk the "Let's Make Rave" brand was born. On Saturday 30th October South Parade pier opens it's doors to Portsmouth's party people for a fright night spectacular. Ahead of the festivities I collared Chris Vaux (PunchFunk) and Ian Void (Geushky) to find out just what's going down.

Geushky @ South Parade Pier May 2010

So let’s get down to business what’s all this I hear about two of Portsmouth’s biggest nights coming together and putting on a "super" night? Where did the concept for this come from?

Ian Void: Chris and I had been wanting to do something along these lines for ages. Its a chance to get back into the spiritual home of each club and for us to play some really current techno sounds.

Chris Vaux: Ian is right, it seems like ages that we have been promising ourselves we would hook a night up and combine our sounds and brands to forge something really exciting. The "Lets Make Rave" brand allows us the freedom of expression with our current taste in music and present it to our crowds. The Pier is my favourite venue in town and no one throws a party there much these days so it's so fresh and almost a new experience again!

What can clubbers expect on the night?

Ian: Well, from me its a chance to play the techno that I find at the cutting edge currently. People generally expect me to play pretty tough, hard and uptempo with a generous helping of classics, this will be a chance for me to expose a new sound.

Chris: I think we want a chance to take the main stage ourselves with Simon Blann, the 24hr DJ and our guest Tommy Mundell. The music we all have at our disposal is so exciting and when we had a meeting to discuss the event we were all buzzing like it was our first event so I guess expect everything you should do from a Geushky and PunchFunk event. Great music, great production, a honkin' sound system and a packed room with an up-for-it crowd. Oh and we're even arranging an express bar to get your beers quicker!

Ooo an express bar - WIN! I hear there is a fancy dress theme – tell me more?

Ian: Simple, anything goes - anything beginning with P or G. Doesn't have to be Halloween themed either, keeps it broad and interesting.

Chris: Exactly what Ian said. We want the crowd to use their imagination and bring something different to the party.. as long as it begins with P or G. Get your thinking pajamas on!

Ian Void

It’s fright night - what’s the most frightening tune you own and why?

Ian: The most frightening tune... hmmm! I have a few depends how you look at it. The Horrorist 'One night in NYC' doesnt sound scary but it is sinister with a date rape / paedo theme so that's scary I guess. Oddly people love that tune.

Chris: I remember hearing that track way back in 2002 Ian. Everyone was having it to the groove and mouthing the vocal. It's actually really warped but brings the house down! I think I would have to agree with Ian.

The night is called “Let’s Make Rave” – where was your first rave experience and how do you think clubbing matches up today?

Ian: For me it doesn't but it's just different these days. I think everyone looks back on the days when it was all fresh and new and it changed their lives. Now you find your kicks in other ways. Making Rave is important cos at the end of the day we all like throwing our hands up in the air and being silly.

Chris: It's important to remember that when we want to really let our hair down and lose ourselves we essentially want to hear amazing music and feel that buzz again. That's what "Let's Make Rave" is about and the last one in Feb was probably my favourite event this year. My first Rave experience wasn't great as it was a squat in Basingstoke. I left pretty soon after arriving but I think that the Manor was pretty rave and it rocked there!!

Chris Vaux - Geushky @ South Parade Pier May 2010

Both of you are prolific producers and djs – what’s going on in the world’s of Chris Vaux and Ian Void? How had 2010 been for you and what’s shaping up for 2011?

Ian: I have had a quietish year abroad comparatively. My music taste has altered over the last 18 months so I am biding my time until I am ready to hit the studio again. I hope to have some new output into 2011 and maybe launch something new label wise.

Chris: It's been a much quieter year for me too on the DJing front as I called an end to the Ibiza adventure to settle down, get engaged and get a "proper job". But I definitely think less has been more and the events at Tiger Tiger plus the other one offs have been fantastic. I've said it before but our last event at the Pier in February was incredible, all the old faces and the buzz was back. People had really, really missed it! I also loved playing in Belfast this year at Kinetik, great bunch.

Chris, you mentioned the Ibiza adventure and I see you spent some time with the man P.Diddy there this summer. Tell us more?

I started working on the VIP concept back in 2007 as a wide eyed, naive young guy before myself and my girlfriend decided we wanted a quieter life. We managed to look after a bunch of celebs out there in the 3 years and partied with the likes of the Swedish House Mafia at P.Diddy's villa. We were looking after him that summer and then I got the call that he was going back this summer and he wanted me to organise everything for him. It was a call on a Friday morning for me to fly out Saturday afternoon with the team. It was a crazy trip, surreal really!! I can't divulge too much but it was memorable especially at Pacha where he performed and we partied at his table with him and a horde of glitterati. We have plenty of stories to tell if you want to collar me on the 30th!

Chris, you’ve done some wicked PunchFunk parties over the years what’s your plans for PunchFunk in 2011?

I want to really give life to the “Let’s Make Rave” brand. It really excites me and I love the flexibility and vibe it gives. We are going to go back to our roots a little more in 2011 and put some party's on that will really excite the Portsmouth crowd. PunchFunk will be the umbrella but “Let’s Make Rave” will be the fresh concept.

Musically I am definitely enjoying playing a really wide spectrum of music. I'm getting some new hardware later this year, the Traktor Kontrol S4 and I think it will give me fresh impetus to introduce a new energy that I think I had been missing for a little while. I had fallen out of love a bit with the music and playing on a rigid format but I have it back now and can't wait to get cracking!

PunchFunk @ South Parade Pier February 2010

Ian, you've been in the techno scene for a long time - how do you think the scene has changed and where do you see it heading?

I can see it getting stronger and stronger, the modern sound is helping to change opinion which is good - but with anything like this commercialism will undoubtedly create a new underground sound - it just recycles every few years. I have to say that the music is at its best for a long while in my opinion.

Ian, Geushky is obviously a Portsmouth treasure and part of clubbing and techno history both as a night and a label - what was your ethos behind the night and can we expect more Geushky parties in the future as they are a rarity these days?

Treat 'em mean and keep 'em keen!! There wont be many, collabs like this one are more likely looking forward. Geushky is just out and out techno raving where everyone is a friend - job done.

What's your favourite piece of kit at the moment either for the studio or for playing out?

Ian: I love my Vestax VCI300 to DJ on - lovely.

Chris: Its the kit I haven't even got yet, I am like a little kid.. Mid-November cant come quick enough for me to get my Traktor Kontrol S4. EXCITED!

What's your "if all else fails" tune?

Ian: Fail?

Chris: "Failure is not an option". But seriously I think when any DJ looks up and see's that the crowd needs that little bit extra they can pull out the big gun. For the 30th I have some bombs I have been saving especially but I think that Marc Romboy's collab with Blake Baxter - Muzik (Version 1) is about as hot as it gets for me at the moment.

Mixmag is currently running a "greatest dj of all time" poll with luminaries such as Carl Cox, Jeff Mills, Laurent Garnier, Richie Hawtin, Sven Vath and Jimmy Saville to name a few - who in your opinion deserves the title and why?

Ian: Too many to choose in too many styles - Garnier is up there though! Dave Clarke, Space DJ's, Andy C, Mills - so many!

Chris: It's like asking what your favourite dinner is. It depends on what mood your in and how its cooked! I think the one guy who I have seen live that literally blows my mind and ticks my boxes is Green Velvet. The guy totally and utterly wrecks it wherever he plays.

On a really suck a*s note Ian was a bit of a legend for me when I was younger and to be up there doing this show with him after my Geushky debut back in May is a total honour!

Well thanks boys! Looks like this is shaping up as a party not to be missed. See you on the dancefloor!
