Talking Lost, LA & 'The Legend of the Black Shawarma' with the daddies of psy trance, Infected Mushroom

Reported by Tara / Submitted 06-04-11 19:31

In these somewhat grim days of Cameron-led cuts, wars, riots, earthquakes and recession, it’s always good to hear an inspiring success story. Erez Eisen and Amit ‘Duvdev’ Duvdevani aka Infected Mushroom are just that, having worked their way up from making tunes in Erez’s bedroom and playing at free parties in their native Israel, they’re now living in LA, working with some of their childhood heroes and in one of the world’s top electronic bands with perhaps the most exciting touring schedule around.

With Halcyon at Proud2 next up on their crowded calendar this Friday 8 April, we tracked the guys down to hear their latest news...

Hey guys, thanks for taking some time out to answer some questions for your fans.

Our pleasure, we love answering questions for our fans…

First, I hear congratulations are in order, as you’ve just had a baby girl Duvdev! How’s 2011 treating you both so far?

Thank you – 2011 is fantastic so far! A beautiful new baby in a beautiful new year.

In April you’re playing in nine different countries including the UK, France, Sweden, Russia, Denmark, Finland, Spain, Switzerland and the USA – that’s a lot of travelling and time away from home! Given that you’re both family men, do you ever think about slowing down and cutting back the live shows or do you love being on the road as much as ever?

That is a good question – of course in an ideal world we would be webcasting our set from the studio in Los Angeles every night. But part of what makes Infected Mushroom so insane is that one night we will be in a remote part of Russia, and the next day in Ibiza; one day in Tel Aviv and the next day in St. Louis. We are a touring band, and as long as we have it in us, we’ll continue to play for our fans around the world!

You’ve grown from being psy trance DJs to a full live band – and in fact you’re now one of the most popular electronic bands on earth! Was this always part of the plan, or something that just happened along the way?

It was not part of the plan, but we have both had experience being in bands before we found each other. Music has always been in our lives – Infected’s evolution was something natural, as you said, it ‘happened along the way’.

You’re both classically trained and Erez you’ve actually been making music on computers since you were just 11 years old. In that time the kit you use to make music must have changed considerably! What’s your favourite hardware and software at the moment? I heard that you got some new gear recently…

The best software progress is Cubase 6 which we cannot live without; everything just gets done faster with all the new features and shortcuts. And regarding synths, our favorite instruments/effects tools are Omnisphere from Spectrasonics and NI Reaktor. There is lots of good software out there but these two are the most important ones for us.

Regarding hardware, we have a new SSL SoundCard (MX4) that can handle lots of hardware channels in real-time (128in, 128out), with the SSL converters it’s heaven for us. I can talk about gear for hours so I’ll just stop.

Following on from that, do you have any new productions in the pipelines you can tell us about?

Well our next album is 99% ready, we are just fine tuning it now because we have the time… and we are writing some new crazy tracks that are planned for collaborations, but I’ll have to wait on talking about those until a bit later.

In the last 15 years you’ve gone from playing free parties in Israel to headlining some of the world’s biggest events. Is there anywhere that stands out as your best gig ever? Burning Man must have been amazing?!

Yes Burning Man was incredible. We have also had some other great gigs – Red Rocks, Coachella, and a cool party for 100,000 people on the beach in Rio De Janeiro with the Black Eyes Peas. Some amazing experiences, it is hard to choose one!

Duvdev and Erez in the studio with Matisyahu

On your last album ‘The Legend of the Black Shawarma’ your worked with two vocalists that you grew up listening to, Jonathan David of Korn (‘Smashing the Opponent’) and Perry Farrell from Jane’s Addiction (‘Killing Time’), both awesome tracks, plus you’ve also had the opportunity to remix tracks by legendary rock band The Doors. Is there anyone else you’d really like to collaborate with or remix?

We enjoyed doing a remix for Matisyahu’s tune ‘One Day’, which became No. 1 in Israel! As far as anyone else we’d enjoy working with, I think Depeche Mode would be great.

Your most recent album ‘The Legend of the Black Shawarma’ was described as a return to your metal roots. Can we expect more metal-inspired tracks from you, or are you into something else at the moment? Do you still get inspired by any psy trance these days?

Well, for the next album we will still of course incorporate rock, but I think it will be a little more electronic this time around – you’ll hear new stuff that we’ve been playing with, like dubstep, but still infused with that “infected” sound. I think you will dig it. It should be out later this year.

Who or what have been your greatest influences over the years? And now?

Depeche Mode, Prodigy, Metallica… and these days Skrillex is making some nasty tunes.

According to the blog on your website you solve any arguments by playing chess. Doesn’t this slow things down in the studio sometimes?!

Yes it does so now we solve things with ping pong, it’s much quicker this way.

You’ve sold over 150,000 copies over six albums. Now that most electronic music artists are just releasing EPs electronically, do you reckon the full artist album still has a future?

There is definitely something to be said about the power of the EP, and we will release an EP from the album, as we did with Shawarma. But we think that albums can put out a broader message, so at least for now, we will continue focusing on LPs.

A lot of hippies are saying that the world is going to end in 2012 next year. If this is indeed the case, what are the main things you would try and do before this happens?

We have both seen a lot and experienced a lot. We try to enjoy every day to the fullest. We are content.

The world starts to end in 2012, and you get offered the chance to escape to another galaxy with your friends and families – but are only allowed to take five tracks each with you. What would they be?

The last thing that I’ll be worried is to take music with me, what about food? Will they have steak burritos over there? Will JJ Abrams will be there as well to create some new TV series like Lost or Fringe?

What’s the one thing you know now that you wish someone had told you when you were first starting out?

Don’t smoke cigarettes.

Your last gig at Halcyon was absolutely insane and this one promises to be just as incredible. Are you looking forward to getting back on the stage at Matter now that it’s Proud2? Is there anything else you hope to do while you’re in the UK?

Yes we are very excited to make it back to the UK – we enjoyed the last gig very much, and this one will no doubt be just as epic. Unfortunately we won’t be in town long enough to enjoy our favorite sites, but we will make the most of it!

Finally, if a fan sees you at the bar next Friday night, what should they buy you to drink?

Haha nothing, they shouldn’t waste their money! The venue gives us free drinks.

Many thanks and looking forward to seeing you again next Friday!

Thank you!

Halycon returns to the club formerly known as Matter — 'Proud 2' — with their most eclectic line up yet. From the unique live psychedelic rock of Infected Mushroom to the sublime proggy sounds of Ace Ventura, the classic euphoric full-on of Tristan to the techier and electro-driven Dejavoo, this Halcyon has got all bases covered.

Headliners Infected Mushroom definitely need no introduction: the psy trance pioneers have evolved into one of the dance scene’s biggest live acts, reflected in their DJmag Top 100 rating several years running and sell out high energy shows all over the globe. Recent collaborations with the likes of Korn’s Jonathan David (‘Smashing the Opponent’) and Jane’s Addictions’ Perry Farrell (‘Killing Time’) have only made their sound harder and faster. Be warned — their live act is not for the faint hearted!

Living legend Tristan is one of the instigators of what we now call the psy trance scene. However he’s not content to rest on his past successes, continuing to progress his sound, reflected in his signing to Nano Records and incredible live sets at festivals all over the planet. Despite being based in London he rarely plays out in clubs here, so this is an opportunity not to be missed.

After their epic launch party last year we’ve asked A.T.A.R.I. Project to Room 2 and they’ve put together a delectable lineup. Yoni Oshrat aka Ace Ventura headlines, playing alongside Future Progressions Records crew Neutrino and Hamish and Swedish prog chick Sofire, currently the darling of the London psy squat scene thanks to her impeccable tune selection and dynamic energy behind the decks.

Global Village Productions are currently top of their game, weaving magic at psychedelic festivals and events like the main stage at Ozora Festival. We just can’t wait to see what they can do with a superclub like Proud2.

Check out http://www.globalvillageproductions.co.uk/ for a taste of their incredible décor.

Finally, as part of the superclub’s relaunch, owner Alex Proud is promising regular buses between the O2 and central London for just £1. Now there’s no need to worry what the tube is or isn’t doing as you won’t be left waiting in the cold.
