Giuseppe and the Zen of Parvati

Reported by Anu Shukla / Submitted 23-04-12 16:17

The power of Goa trance works in the most mysterious ways. Its effect has been like a kaleidoscopic explosion of fractals that splinter through multiple dimensions before coalescing like a kind of magic. It first made its impact on Parvati Records founder and label manager Giuseppe back in the early ’90s. By the year 2000, he’d formed the label, and since that time, his contribution to the electronic psychedelic trance music scene has been simply phenomenal.

If police identity parades were based on the waves of sound alone, then there’s a strong possibility you’d recognise this one. Parvati Records has not just brought us some of most talented psy trance producers from the global underground; it has achieved the feat of becoming known for that so-called Parvati sound.

Onkel Dunkel (formerly one half of the legendary project Grapes of Wrath), Jahbo, Zoolog, ECT, Atriohm, Mubali, Nolm, Derango, White Wizard, Naked Tourist: the man’s got a seventh sense for detecting top-notch sound design and music creativity — and it has led him to some of the most talented beings that know how to make things happen. Within just four years of the label’s launch, Parvati had released Kindzadza’s Waves from Outer Space: one of the most respected and pioneering producers of the Russian dark psy sound.

For a record label though, it’s not an easy feat in an industry that’s more undergrowth than underground and that’s suffered its fair share of slack from the mainstream media and market. Parvati, however, is going stronger than ever; exploring new sounds with innovative artists and the release of its third and final compilation of the Parvatrip series, Parvatrip 3: featuring five new producers, a brand new production from Jahbo and mighty collaborations between Baba Yaga and Stranger.

Artists from the label will be playing at the most anticipated festivals of 2012, including Cosmo Festival (which went down a storm in 2011) and of course the epic Boom Festival. So as Parvati artists continue to send electric currents through the trance floor, its vision remains focused on pushing the boundaries of psytrance with its driving avant-garde grooves yet friendly dancefloor vibes.

The label has come a long, long way over the last 12 years, and while some may roll eyes at genre-fixation of psychedelic sounds, there’s no denying that Parvati sound.

The label’s artists define it pretty well: talents that have emerged from different places and cultures and that represent ‘a message of love and understanding’, as Giuseppe puts it. Sounds so light and fluffy for a label known to be so dark and demonic… So what exactly is ‘dark’? Anu Shukla speaks to label manager Giuseppe about Goa trance parties, that Parvati Sound and his up and coming set at the Boom Festival’s Dance Temple

So the Goa trance scene hit you back in the early ‘90s… What was the sensation you felt the very first time you heard that sound?

My very first encounter with the scene goes back to 1986, when I arrived in Goa for the first time and experienced a full moon party in Baga Beach. The strongest sensation I had was the feeling of freedom and openness – there were lots of hippies running around naked!!!!

Goa has changed a lot since those early days when it all first began. You were back there earlier this year playing at the Boom Festival Goa Taster party. How was it and could this become the future of Goa parties?

Boom Party in Goa this winter has been an amazing experience in terms of crowd participation and music journey. After some years of having a low profile and almost no parties, I believe that there will be now a renaissance of Goa, the place that has been the cradle of the psy trance culture.

You’ll be playing a set at the Dance Temple this year – congratulations! What is it that you love about the Boom Festival and what can we expect to hear from your set this year?

To play at Boom… It’s like a dream being at this festival, the main gathering for the people who listen, enjoy and dance to this kind of music. With my set I will try to take the dance floor by surprise and hopefully give two and a half hours of power dance to the freaks who dare to hear me!!!

The up and coming Sounds of Parvati party at Club Colosseum in London on 28 April features some pretty awesome artists, including Tengri, who also plays at Boom and happens to be an Atriohm and Vlastur Dub connection! Do we detect some dubtastic vibes from Parvati in the near future?

Yes, definitely there will be something in the close future while I see a strong connection between dub and the sound of Parvati. Some ideas are on the table so something will happen on that plan too!

Over the years, the label has managed to accumulate an identity of its own in terms of that so-called Parvati sound… What elements of the Parvati sound separate it from other labels that produce the genre known as dark psychedelic? And how do you define the sound known as Parvati?

The so-called Parvati sound is the result of the label’s activity through the years with 26 released CDs and tight collaboration with a main group of artists that have grown musically together with the label. Some of the musical elements that contribute to the development of our sound are basically: a solid groove to support the dance, the use of organic and natural sound, twisted and spacey atmospheres and talking leads!!

The music also has to cover both aspects of entertainment and exploration and try to maintain always a “surprise effect” over the listener/dancer. If I should define my label sound I would say: Deep Twisted Psychedelic Dance Music.

I think that what separate Parvati from the other Dark Psy labels is the fact that our sound has been developed over the last 12 years… and that very few such labels (if any) have been around so long!

Your skill for recognising talent has demonstrated the incredible contribution that you have made to psy trance music over the years — particularly with the introduction of artists such as Zoolog, Jahbo and Onkel Dunkel. What draws you to the artists that you work with? What inspires you to seek out that sound?

I have always appreciated the producers who are composing their music straight out of their heart — meaning, with original sound inspiration and not following what is popular at the time. My musical research has always been based on the emotions/feeling aspect: each track must develop a story and communicate emotions. Music for me is feelings and that is what I mainly listen to when I decide to support an artist with my label work.

Congratulations on the third compilation of the Parvatrip series. You’ve got an interesting collaboration there with ECT (Leigh Griffiths) — a highly talented yet modest producer of old school origins who has become very good at working quietly behind the scenes without too many people noticing! Tell us a little bit about this collaboration, your connection with Leigh and how it came about.

I’ve known ECT music since the ’90s and in your question you somehow already have my answer about Parvati and ECT when you define him as a “highly talented yet modest producer... working quietly behind the scenes”! These are all positive qualities which I could not resist! ECT music reflects the Parvati music principles; pushing them in his own direction but still being connected to the whole idea of producing intelligent music which can be enjoyed at parties but also heard quietly at home! Diversity inside unity is one of the key concepts at Parvati Records.

We hear that this third compilation of the Parvatrip series is the final one — what’s next on the agenda in terms of compilations for Parvati?

Parvatrip is the third trilogy that I have compiled through the years after the Psychedelically Yours and Psy Stories compilations. In the close future there will be first two V/As compiled by Label DJs Ilse and Jahbo, and after… we’ll see!!!!

With the technology we have today, it’s become increasingly important to be both geeky and creative. Seems there are many people with this skill-set. What do you look for when listening to the many demos people send to you at the label? What in your eyes makes a good psytrance producer and DJ?

Technology gives us tools, but skill alone is not interesting for me label-wise. Today, everybody can compose a tune, but not everybody has got the originality and creative fire inside to give our scene new elements of growths... I am searching for those guys and the way for me to find out is to listen not only with my ears but also with my feelings.

Strongest musical influence/inspiration from outside of the psy trance scene?

Psychedelic Rock, New Wave and Reggae... My all time favourite band is The Clash.

Question from psy trance DJ Full Lotus who also plays at this weekend's Parvati party: What’s your favourite psychedelic album of the ’60s?

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

Most influential artist from the Goa trance movement?

For me the most influential artists from the Goa trance movement are the full power dancers blasting the floors… They are the inspiration for my work.

Let’s talk about the zen of dark: is there light in dark? Tell us about dark psy and what it means to you.

Dark psy means little to me: I love and promote the psychedelic culture expressed by music as a tool for a better understanding of the Self and of what is around us. But music can also just be experienced as enjoyment and nothing more...

Light and dark are both aspects of the same energy. I believe and want to focus on the positive side of this energy. This is for me a way of life and I try to apply it every day. I want with my label work to help in the building of a global bridge unifying the people over the values of Community, Love, Fun, Responsibility for the Self and the Others and Mother Earth; but in the end “It is just about Music”!!

A question from artist and psy trance DJ, Miss Piskey: Wow Denmark! What would the psy trance scene be like without the Danish influence and what do Danish people eat to make you so ahead of your time? Do the northern lights activate consciousness!?

The Danish scene of psychedelic trance music has always been divided between the more proggy “fancy” scene of Copenhagen and the hippy underground psy trance of Aarhus — the town where I live and where Parvati is based. In our town, two things have been making the difference: a school for learning to produce electronic music; and a forest just outside town where we have been holding lots of underground parties since 1995. We do not see the Northern Lights in this forest party place, but we always get a splendid sunrise over the sea!

Big thanks Giuseppe! One final question — complete the sentence: Love is… LIFE!

More: From dance-music shindig to trans-global Mecca, Portugal’s Boom Festival is the epitome of the global gathering yet goes far beyond the confines of just a music festival.

It all began in 97' when 3,500 people stomped to a soundsystem in the midst of a Mediterranean forest. These however, were humble beginnings for the Boom Festival and it wasn’t long before it began its transformation into a knowledge-based portal for channeling groundbreaking, powerful information.

Taking place around the shores of a stunning lake in the heart of the Portuguese countryside, the Boom has evolved into a trans-global, multi-cultural arts and music event driven by an ethos that revolves around environmental sustainability.

It continues to attracts a plethora of scientists, environmentalists, ecologists, musicologists, engineers, designers, adventurers, writers, philosophers, activists, researchers and academics that converge with Boomers to interact, communicate, celebrate and learn.

The meticulous production of the Boom takes place over an 18-month period and pivots around a relentless environmental program. Boom sprang from the roots of the alternative, counterculture movement, so activist sentiments continue to drive its ethos; its quest to communicate solution-based ideas for change welcomed by a highly receptive audience that has continued to grow and expand in parallel dimensions to the evolution of the festival itself.

The festival’s Conventions Area in the year 2000 became a platform for powerful global voices from across the world to project thoughts, ideas and innovations. Its transmutation to the Liminal Village in 2002 however, was a turning point and a defining moment that amplified a solutions-based response to a world in spiritual crisis.

It is here that avatar minds such as Robert Venosa, Graham Hancock, Erik Davis, Alex Grey, Don Guillermo Arevalo and Vandana Shiva have spread pioneering ideas, stimulating discussion and debate, confronting the impact of the capitalist class economy.

The Boom’s unique approach to the whole festival experience is defined by its dedication to learning and development through innovation and knowledge. It is as intellectual and inclusive as it is holistic and psychedelic yet in this role, it has transcended media-induced stereotypes of the global gathering and subcultural movements associated with it.

Each edition carries with it a unique theme. Alchemy becomes the chosen theme for 2012 in light of its dual resonation with the Maya prophecy of global awakening and with post-post modernism: the latter being highly apt, particularly in light of movements such as Occupy and the tidal wave of activist dissent that we have experienced of late.

Environmental sustainability remains its driving force, winning the festival awards such as the Greener Festival Award in 2008 and 2010 (for Outstanding Contribution) and the European Festival Award 2010 (for Green ‘n’ Clean Festival of the Year).

Stimulated to raise the consciousness vibration, the Boom Festival continues to evolve as an interactive event, driven by the principles of Peace, Art, Environment, Psychedelic Culture and Love.

More: Cosmo Festival is the UK’s only purely psychedelic electronic music festival. This gathering of the tribes began in 2009 with a vision to create self-awareness and joy through dance. We are celebrating our third anniversary from 1–4 June 2012 with a cornucopia of world famous musicians, fire performers, workshops, healing therapists, market stalls, restaurants, licensed bars and lots more going on to keep you thrilled and entertained – over three nights of camping in a beautiful southern country location surrounded by panoramic views.

At Cosmo, the Main Stage is designed for you to visualise and enjoy the intelligent depths of psychedelic trance: twilight, forest, full-on, groovy full-on, Goa and progressive. We’ve handpicked a fine selection of live artists from all over the globe, including Kox Box (DK), Flooting Grooves (SA), Electrypnose (CH), Grouch (NZ), Arjuna(IT), Sensient (AU), Hoodwink (UK), Tantrix (UK/IT), Ianuaria (AT), Digitalian (JP), Annoyingninjas (DK), Deviant Species (UK) – and many more.

Hosted by Planet Bob’s+Chai Emporium, the Lunar Stage presents you with a unique feast of eclectic international talent from the realms of progressive, house, minimal techno, chillout, ambient and acoustic. Australian label Zenon Records will be showcasing the likes of One Tasty Morsel, Reactant and Pspiralife – all making their UK debuts – and there’s rare live sets from Aes Dana (FR), ISHQ (UK), Radioactive Cake (DE), Sattyananda (IN), Hypogeo (IT)[b] and [b]De Fuego (HU/ESP) as well as local legends like Lemon Tree, Kained & Able, Sprocket, Liquid Ross, Spindrift, Mr Mush, Lorraine, Andy Force and many more.

This year for our third anniversary we’re extremely happy to announce the introduction of a third stage in association with our good friends at Jacks House. Featuring the perfect summer soundtrack to chill to in the sun with your friends, Jacks-house Stage will cover underground house, electro, minimal, tech-house and all things in between to give another dimension to this celebration of electronic music.

But Cosmo is not just all about the music. The beginning of a world consciousness is dawning and a new realisation of our cultural roots as human beings has begun. With our extended capacity brings more décor, visionary art, workshops, documentary films, fire performances and a healing area for the body and soul.

Cosmo 2012 is also very excited to see a momentous change in our festival's age group profile. Children under 12 will be allowed at the festival for free when accompanied by adult parent/guardian. Children between the ages of 12-18 are not allowed to attend Cosmo Kids Zone will feature games, performances, crafts workshops, circus performances and many more fun family activities. Detailed info for children's entry procedures and helpful tips for parents will be up on our website very soon...

With the economic downturn affecting everyone, we’re keeping our ticket sales as low as we can in 2012. Our Phase II saver tickets are just £60 until the end of March and Phase III are £76 until the end of May!
