25 Years of K-Klass

Reported by CypherPR / Submitted 24-09-13 16:49

Welsh duo K-Klass are responsible for some of the biggest house tracks ever made. Nights at the legendary Hacienda club in 1988 led to the meeting of minds and the beginnings of the K-Klass project, spearheading regular performances at the era defining den of iniquity. In 1990 K-Klass scored their first UK top 10 hit with ‘Rhythm is a Mystery’ and they haven’t stopped since.

Over the course of their career, K-Klass have won the International Dance Awards, been nominated for a Grammy award, and been residents at one of the most important dance brands on the planet, Cream. Not to mention the countless collaborations and remixes they’ve done for artists as huge and diverse as Pet Shop Boys, Kylie Minogue, Frankie Knuckles, New Order, Janet Jackson, Candi Staton, and many many more.

We caught up with K-Klass ahead of the release of their 25 Years of K-Klass Club Anthems album and their appearance at Cream’s 21st Anniversary to talk to them about the past, present and future of this global dance phenomenon.

For anyone who doesn’t know, tell us who you are and what your music is about.

We are K-klass and have been producing and remixing house music since the Acid House explosion of 1988. We started off as a live act before moving onto DJing and producing. Our original line up was Paul Roberts, Andy Williams, Carl Thomas and Russell Morgan and were joined in 1990 by vocalist Bobbi Depasois. Carl and Andy left around 2007.

Who or what were your biggest influences in the early days? How did it all start?

Our biggest influences in the beginning were early Detroit Techno producers like Derrick May, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson as well as pioneering Hacienda DJs Graeme Park and Mike Pickering. In the beginning Carl & Andy were already in a band called Interstate, we saw them performing a early gig with 808 State and got talking on a later night out at the Hacienda, we decided to pool our equipment and resources and record a 4 track E.P. called Wildlife E.P. for Eastern Bloc Records . . . Rhythm Is A Mystery followed soon after and the rest as they say is history.

Why did you decide to release this 25-year career-spanning album?

We felt 25 years is a landmark and the best way to mark it, is to release a collection of all our best work over the last quarter of a century!

Tell us about the anniversary tour, in particular your part in the Cream 21st birthday celebrations.

We are putting together a tour to coincide with the release of the 25 Album. With our long-standing relationship with Cream we are absolutely delighted to share our 25-year anniversary with Cream's very own 21st anniversary. The tour will incorporate DJ sets as well as full live performances, with the latter the first time since 1996.

Why were clubs like the Hacienda and Cream so important to your career and music culture in general?

Both clubs were groundbreaking and very special in their own right; They were both based firmly around the music. They were places where creative people met and forged the foundations for many successful careers.

How has the clubbing and dance music scene changed since the start of your career?

It has changed beyond recognition; House Music is always evolving and reinventing itself, which is why it has lasted so long. The digital domain has brought about new challenges and opportunities for those artists that have moved with the times and adapted to them.
What are your biggest career highlights of the last 25 years?

Firstly, having a track played in the Hacienda, which was our initial aim, then seeing the same track go onto international chart success. Touring the world with Liverpool superclub Cream, winning the IDA remixers of the year in 1996, getting nominated for a Grammy in 2002. As well as getting a chance to put together an album of our last 25 years.

What effect or influence do you think K-Klass have had on the dance music of today?

We would like to think we have definitely had a influence as did a lot of the pioneering acts of the late 1980's early 1990's. House music from that era set the blue print for what is now a global phenomenon.

You’ve worked with and remixed a huge number of artists over the years. If you could work with anyone, who would it be and why?

Over the years we have been honoured to work with some amazing artists and have ticked off many from our wish list. These days our respect is mainly aimed to some people that we consider to be at the cutting edge of the scene, people like Sandy Rivera, Dennis Ferrer and many others.

What are your plans for the future?

As we mentioned, reforming the band as a live act as well as signing and releasing established as well as up and coming artists for our label Klass Action.
Which is your favourite track from your new album?

On listening back to tracks, Carleen Anderson "True Spirit" stuck out, though we are immensely proud of all of the tracks that we have chosen for the album.

Do you expect to still be doing this in another 25 years?

We would like to think so... health permitting. We still see ourselves as being as relevant now as we have always been and there is no reason why not... These days age is just a number!!
What advice would you give to aspiring artists who wanted a career as long and successful as yours?

Take your own musical path, believe in what you do and above all be respectful to your fans and other people in the industry.

'K-Klass 25 – 25 Years of K-Klass Club Anthems' comes out on 22nd September and features 34 of their biggest anthems and hits, spanning their incredible 25 year career. Including such K-Klass classics as Rhythm is a Mystery, Let Me Show You, and their remixes of Bobby Brown – 2 Can Play That Game, Juliet Roberts- Caught in the Middle and more!
