My first review of the year and I was totally stoked to receive this fantastic 3 tracker from Ephexis, out now on Nu Energy. Some of you may have seen the recent HF feature on this awesome production outfit who combine many different elements of Psy, Hard Dance and Freeform among many others.
Tracks 1 & 2 are 2 different mixes of the awesome “Raise Alarm”.
The original mix is a tough as hell yet still funky D’n’B track – think along the lines of Bad Company going head to head with Pendulum and you’re in the right arena, with tough, gritty basslines, high tech futuristic sounds and furious percussion. Chuck in the distinctly Rage Against The Machine style vocal and what we have is a guaranteed floor filler every time. Already several D’n’B head DJ mates are begging me for the promo – no chance!
The 2nd mix of “Raise Alarm” is the one that really did it for me. From the edgy intro, this track screams out to take notice. Fast BPMs, a tough NRG/Psy crossover bassline and tons of detailed filler sounds make this a real energetic track, ideal for the tougher end of a hard dance set, a freeform set or to go between the two. An absolutely vicious acid line rises and falls through the entire track, giving that crucial extra edge and ensuring that at no stage does the track calm down – brilliant! The same vocal as the original features, used sparingly and intelligently to complete the track.
For me though, the standout track of the package is “Spatial Inversion”. A tough Psy/Hard Trance crossover, that could equally fall happily into a Freeform set as well. An instrumental intro drops into sharp gabber kicks before the tough pulser of a bassline comes in, with a haunting female vocal, a neat but minimal lead riff that never gets in the way of the track. I’ve been hammering the track for a few weeks now and the feedback has already been awesome, both when played early in the set pitched down a little, and towards the end of a set when the track’s sheer energy makes for a great finale.
As always with any release on Nu Energy, production quality is at an absolute premium – I have a feeling Ephexis are going to be going a long way in 2007.
