On the Cubase MIDI Gate, you can link the trigger to either the on OR the off I think (?) But I always have it so that playing notes *switches off* the gate. I.e. you get silence until you actually hit a key. So it's a bit like playing a rhythm with a sampler.

Thinking about it I can see a lot more potential for using a gate triggered from a MIDI signal than to an audio signal. And I can see potential for the note on signal both opening and closing the gate. Could be something interesting to play with.
