That's what the 'release' time is for.

I.e. the compressor carries on compressing for a certain amount of time after the initial peak.

Try it -- trust me, it's cool! Big grin

On the Cubase MIDI Gate, you can link the trigger to either the on OR the off I think (?) But I always have it so that playing notes *switches off* the gate. I.e. you get silence until you actually hit a key. So it's a bit like playing a rhythm with a sampler.

Thinking about it I can see a lot more potential for using a gate triggered from a MIDI signal than to an audio signal. And I can see potential for the note on signal both opening and closing the gate. Could be something interesting to play with.
